@Diane I’m doing light reading right now by going through the “in Death” series by JD Robb. (currently on #23 of 47-ish) Interspersed with book club books and ones that catch my interest here. That’s how I ended up reading “Watchers” by Dean Koontz.
@Jan I was told about the series when it first came out, but trading it didn’t fit my life at that time. I was told again about it by the husband of the barn owner where I boarded my horse. He went on and on about this history. Still, didn’t have time to read it. Then one day at the video rental, I saw the DVD and said to myself, oh, I think that is based on the book I was told to read. First episode and I was gone! Binged the series and then spent the winter inhaling all eight books!! Watched season one over again, then again with the commentary. Only saw season 2 once and haven’t yet seen season 3. (I don’t have cable) I will be watching season 3 next weekend and waiting for 4 on DVD. In the meantime, I’m going to read the books over again, slower than the first time, lol. The book has history, science, SciFi, a great love story and is written so well. It deserved it’s place as #2. ❤️
It is okay if you like historical romance. I do not. I like mysteries, fantasy and sci fi. When I was young and in my prime I liked romance novels but now I am in my waning years I prefer adventure and heroic tales.
@Leslie , I don’t consider myself a lover of romance novels either, but thoroughly enjoyed these books. There is so much more to this series than romance. Family, suffering, joy, heartbreak, humanity….. Well written, definite page turner
I think the first book has the most romance in it since it was world building. It’s there underneath the rest of the books, but the history comes out a lot stronger, especially when they’re in America
It’s not a historical romance novel. It’s really not. It’s historical fiction and adventure built around a marriage between two people who have – literally – a timeless love. Each book in the Outlander series has a theme. The first book’s theme is Love. The second book is marriage. The third is Identity. The fourth is family, etc. I’ve been reading this series repeatedly since 1991. Believe me. I would not have done that if this were a historical romance.
My first copy was a loan from a friend after I packed up all my books and shipped them to the other side of the country. I nearly didn’t read it because the back cover sounded like a historical romance. Given who loaned it to me, I really should have known better. LOL
When my son-in-law was deployed overseas, he asked me to send him a good, lengthy book. I sent Outlander, and told him it was the first book in a series. About a month later he called me and asked if I had the rest of the books. He had already passed Outlander around, and his buddies were reading it around the clock. I sent the next three, which were all there were at the time. He said people were almost fighting to get them. They were still circulating around Camp Liberty when he left. Several years ago I saw a post on an Outlander site, where the person said they had first read and fallen in love with Outlander while stationed at Camp Liberty. I wondered if it was the book I sent. ?
That is exactly how I got started. I am a teacher-librarian and someone donated it to my library. The best part though is it sat on my coffee table for a long time because I usually only read adult lit on vacation. One Saturday morning I decided to it was time to pick it up But I was so comfortable in my chair. It occurred to me to download it to my Kindle from my library. I ended up reading the whole series and ignoring children lit for months.
I listened to the entire series. Fell in love with Jamie and Claire and their romance…….wonderful. I love the TV show too. A wonderful way to escape from reality.
That’s what I did last year, took months of hunting to find all 1st edition hard covers with dust jackets, but my daughter’s squeals of delight when she opened them was amazing.
It is a truly wonderful series. I am in AZ now to see Gabaldon on Sunday in Scottsdale for the 25th anniversary of Voyager. I have been reading them since the beginning.
It has everything… Historical Romance yet it’s about enduring love of a lifetime & family, Time travel, Spans so many years over the 8 soon to be 9 books. She puts real life events & characters in the books. The 1st time I loaned a book it was to a guy. He was thrilled because she also included the wars during the time periods. You can smell her descriptions. Go to her Facebook page or her webpage if you want a sample. Even her side books & Novellas are marvelous !!!
@Jan Thanks for the info. I will check it out. Have you ever read any of the Bregdan Chronicles by Ginny Dye? Series of books about the Civil War ….great characters and historical fiction.
Have you heard of Bookcrossing? It is where you put codes in books and track where they go. Read a book, put a code in it, leave it where others can pick it up to read.
My sister and I were at a huge library book sale when she found out I hadn’t read Outlander yet. Guess what I found slipped into my bag when I got home? And, yes, I did finally read it! ?
I need to buckle down and read it. I scored the whole series of ebooks for .99 on a special deal a few years back, but I’m having such hard time getting into it.
I’m going to be in big trouble, but I think the first four are enough. I read them all, and at some point, the plot got either silly or repetitive. Claire and Jaime falling in love: 5 stars. Captain (??) Grey is a fave. But not in love with everyone else. Have to say the history seems pretty accurate.
in 1993 we went to Kauai for a trip and I met up with a pen pal for lunch. She took me to a book store after lunch and bought me my first copy of Outlander and told me to read it on the plane ride home. I loved it and have all the books now but since I read them as they came out.. some years apart i never got over whelmed. trying to read the series now its hard to go from book to book straight of.. the story is so overwhelming. but i still love the first book best and find Dragon Fly a bore..
Not everyone was swept up into the Outlander craze. There are those of us who read the first book of the series and realized there was better reading material out there for us. One of the reasons it came in #2 was because it had an organized campaign.
No need to bash any book. I voted and wasn’t part of any “organized campaign”. I did because I’ve been a fan of the book series for over 20+ years. Not everyone has the same taste and it’s better that way. Imagine how boring it would be. Same as so many people loved Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects. I read Gone Girl, didn’t care for it. Despite that I gave Sharp Objects a try..still nothing. (I figured out the end way early in the book too) I’m just not a Gillian Flynn fan and I’m fine with that.
My friend read it over 20 years ago and has tried to get me to read it forever!! I didn’t until I see the preview of the show.. She’s been a crazed fan forever!!
My daughter recommended The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin, I liked it so much, I found another one of hers, The Anatomy Of Dreams : ) Both great reads!!! Another great read is always just around the corner ?
Some of my favorites books have been freebies, or ones recommended by strangers! I was browsing in a small bookstore 20+ years ago, trying to decide what to buy to read, when a woman reached right across my face, grabbed Outlander off the shelf and said “Read this one”. So I did! Wish I knew who she was, she gave me many hours of outstanding reading!!
@Kathleen oh I know, I tried to listen to outlander on audible a number of times but couldn’t get into it, but I’m talking about the outsider by Stephen king. I would love to find a copy of that!
@Atlanta I like the King one, too. A lot. I was talking about SE Hinton’s The Outsiders, which is brilliant and she was in high school when she wrote it. You’ll love it.
Oh it’s such a wonderful series!
Yes❤️But make sure you have a few hours to spare. You can not put it down.
Enjoy
Just picked mine up at the Library
Addictive!!!
I just went through all my books to see if I had it…nope. I’ll have to go & buy it.
I’m gonna re-read the series this winter! ❤️
I’ll reread the series closer to when “Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone” is due to come out. So I have some time…
@Debbie I’ll re-read it then too! Lol
@Diane I’m doing light reading right now by going through the “in Death” series by JD Robb. (currently on #23 of 47-ish) Interspersed with book club books and ones that catch my interest here. That’s how I ended up reading “Watchers” by Dean Koontz.
I’ve re-read the series at least 6x’s and watched the show on Starz over & over !!! It’s the BEST !!!
It deserved it’s place as #2. ❤️
Every time I read it or even see the show I get more out of it. Her side books and Novellas are Great too !!!
Just got to book 2 in the series. Such a great story and the author really paints a beautiful picture as you read. Very well written.
This series is great… yes, it’s a love story, but I actually like the history, and the humor as much, or more, especially the history…

Love the series
I think you are right!
Well worth the read! Great series.
Absolutely. You’ll love it.
Sure is!
Definitely!!!
Yes, now your journey begins…
You won’t be disappointed !
If you’re having trouble sleeping it will help?
Awesome series
After the finale, I decided to give it a go. My hunt is on for a used copy!
http://abebooks.com/ is a good place for used books ?
ThriftBooks is also a great online store. Many of their used book are $3.79.
It is okay if you like historical romance. I do not. I like mysteries, fantasy and sci fi. When I was young and in my prime I liked romance novels but now I am in my waning years I prefer adventure and heroic tales.

@Sally and plenty of adventure!
It takes a while, but the fantasy elements are there, and if the television plots follow the book, you might see the fantasy element building.
It’s not a historical romance novel. It’s really not. It’s historical fiction and adventure built around a marriage between two people who have – literally – a timeless love. I hadn’t heard of this book until this show. I will have to get a copy!!
I have never been a romance reader but this series is so much more than that.
Enjoy
It took me 3 times to get into it and when I did I couldn’t put it down!!
You won’t regret it. I’m on book #4.
DUDE.
Free books are always a sign…unless it’s Ayn Rand or L. RON Hubbard
Prepare for reading nights followed by reading days. Love this cast of characters, we all need a Murtaugh in our live.
That’s the same way I started the series 20 years ago
Great crackin. Chop chop.
Don’t ignore the omens.
I’ve never read it.
I bought book 1 for my kindle for $1.99 right after the GAR list came out. I still haven’t read it but it’s next on my list.
Cool!!
Read the book!!
YES!!!! You will LOVE it!
My first copy was a beat up paperback on a bargain table and I read it cover to cover at a Disney World trip
It’s SO GOOD!
My husband & I have read the whole series (multiple times plus listened to the audio books) & we’re both eagerly awaiting the next one!
My first copy was a loan from a friend after I packed up all my books and shipped them to the other side of the country. I nearly didn’t read it because the back cover sounded like a historical romance. Given who loaned it to me, I really should have known better. LOL

Jealous! I’m waiting for mine from the Library. Anyone want to donate/ship me one?
#outlander now has its own emoji!
You’ll be glad you did
Starting tomorrow. Can hardly wait…..so why don’t I start now?!?!
@Joan start it right now! You’ll be up all night but it’s Friday
@Kit Thx I’m retired so every night is a weekend. Lucky me!!
@Joan can’t wait to hear from you tomorrow
oh yes.then look for the sequels

I listened to the entire series. Fell in love with Jamie and Claire and their romance…….wonderful. I love the TV show too. A wonderful way to escape from reality.
Isn’t Davina Porter wonderful as the narrator? I’ve had the books forever and have the Audible versions now too.
@Debbie yes she is! I love listening to books. I don’t know how they keep all the different voices straight. yes, she is wonderful.
The first two chapters can be a little slow the first time you read this book. Stick with it, hang onto your hat, and enjoy the ride!
After the 1st few chapters I was bored. Argue and make up over and over. Nit for me.
SCORE!
You will LOVE it.
I ordered my copy from Amazon today!
Told my sister “Christmas gift idea”- she read the first 4 years ago but borrowed them
That’s what I did last year, took months of hunting to find all 1st edition hard covers with dust jackets, but my daughter’s squeals of delight when she opened them was amazing.
COOL
It is a truly wonderful series. I am in AZ now to see Gabaldon on Sunday in Scottsdale for the 25th anniversary of Voyager. I have been reading them since the beginning.
Great read. Have read it and reread it a few times
Need to read that one have not yet
That’s too bad.
It’s always magical when the book picks the reader! ???
Yes! Enjoy!
Read it!
What is Outlander about?

Is that just a website?
@Karen go to the website http://bookcrossing.com/ to read more about it. Have you heard of Where’s George? Same concept.
@Amy no
I love book giving!
It took me three attempts to read this book–once I did I loved it!
Send it to me after?!!
I need to read that.
There are 8 books?
Amen! Get to it! You won’t regret it!
You found treasure!
My sister and I were at a huge library book sale when she found out I hadn’t read Outlander yet. Guess what I found slipped into my bag when I got home? And, yes, I did finally read it! ?
Great story with wonderful characters!!! Enjoy ..I did!
Don’t know much about it, but if it came in at #2, it must be worth reading. My vote was for Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
I’ve been a big Outlander fan for over 20+ years. The others that you mentioned are also great books.
Love reading them.
I need to buckle down and read it. I scored the whole series of ebooks for .99 on a special deal a few years back, but I’m having such hard time getting into it.
Maybe it’s a sign that someone disliked it so much they left it behind!
I am totally sucked in ?
I loved the first book. I’ve read four now and I had to take a break. But I do plan to finish them.
@Stacey I’ve read the first book twice and it’s my all time favorite. I’m not sure what my holdup is in reading the rest-
I’m going to be in big trouble, but I think the first four are enough. I read them all, and at some point, the plot got either silly or repetitive. Claire and Jaime falling in love: 5 stars. Captain (??) Grey is a fave. But not in love with everyone else. Have to say the history seems pretty accurate.
@Stacey I read about 4 and never went back. I do like history but not a fan of reading romance.
It’s heaven sent♥️?
Def!!! I’ve never read it but it’s on my lengthy list now!! ???

definitely a sign lol
you won’t regret it!
Had the same experience with ‘I Robot’, someone left it in a busy shopping mall in San Jose, Costa Rica. I had never read it so, I did, and liked it.
My daughter recommended The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin, I liked it so much, I found another one of hers, The Anatomy Of Dreams : ) Both great reads!!! Another great read is always just around the corner ?
It’s a fantastic read
Nice
I picked it up at at thrift store for .79
Love it!
Lucky please let us know how it is I have been wanting to read it but have been putting it off for years
Some of my favorites books have been freebies, or ones recommended by strangers! It’s a great book
Lucky you! What do you do for work?
Work is said to be done when a force acts on an object and moves it over a distance.☺
Oops, I thought you meant The Outsider ? now that’s a book I want to find a copy of!
Atlanta Kane The Outsiders is so much better. It’s a real book, worthy of literature.
@Kathleen the outsiders is better then the outsider? ? or outlander?
Atlanta Kane Outsiders is a magnificent read. Outlanders is a romance novel, not worthy of your time since you’re a real reader.
@Kathleen I thought you might’ve been ? I’m enjoying horror once again after denying myself for 5 months due to the great American read ?
@Atlanta same here. Now I can go back to what I want to read.
@Kathleen ? we’re friends on good reads right? I was surprised to see you in this group, I didn’t know you were a member. ?
@Atlanta yeah it’s me ?
@Kathleen ? ? I’m happy to see a familiar face
Can’t wait to read it…just finishing “The Book Thief”.
One of my faves for sure!
Great story!
I have just downloaded to my kindle, looking forward to starting it today.
Mulberry Creek is free to Prime Members!
Great book!!!!
I opened a Free Books basket at work before I retired.
What a great idea!
Lucky you ! That’s my next read
don’t fight the signs. It is a great book
I want to read it, too. Gotta find a copy.
Absolutely!
I’m amazed that EVERYONE hasn’t read Outlander!
I need to going to try and get it this weekend
@Andrea you will not be disappointed… I read the last book, 740+ pages, in three days.
I had never heard of it before GAR.
Free? It’s a sign from the Universe to read this book!
Absolutelly!
You shouldn’t be disappointed. Obsessed perhaps. ?
Yes. Fabulous
