I still have my copy somewhere. I liked it, and I wanted so badly to finish it, but it was taking so long to get to the good stuff. I love the story of the books, just not the slow pace.
It took me awhile to get into it. But I’m stubborn and figured since I bought it I’m going to read it. About a third of the way in I really started to love it. I kept going with the series and I’m glad I did.
It was quite a long time ago when I started the series …love love love everything about each one …I am a big fan of time travel, and any historical time period so I didn’t have any problems ..my only problem is patiently waiting for the next one…lol
I took a long time to get through the first half, but then sped through the last half at record speed. I never tried reading any books beyond book 1 though.
Yes! It got better. I found the subsequent books hard to get through, the 5th sat on my bedside table for a year collecting dust before I admitted to myself I’d never read it
Not for me. I was hooked from the start. I’m currently reading the series for the third time and anxiously waiting for her to finally finish the next book.
I returned to it 2 years later to give it a second chance and am extremely glad I did! But I had to get through like 200-250 pages before I was invested. Worth the commitment IMO.
It might have dragged but I first read it in audiobook format and as soon as Davina Porter gave Jamie a voice, I was hooked. Completely ruined me for the print version, not to mention the TV show.
Just a suggestion for people who struggle but want to read the series – I listened to the series before I read them. I don’t know if I’d have made it through the entire series just reading them. Audible considers Outlander one of its “essential” books and it was at one time the best selling audiobook of all time (before Harry Potter was done in audio format) and is still near the top. The narrator, Davina Porter is one of the best in the business. How a 70-year-old English woman could be the voice of a 20-year-old Scotsman, I will never understand. But she did a superb job in the first book and aged the voices so well throughout the series. Porter has to be in her late 80s now and if she is not with us to narrate the next book, it will be devastating. I cannot watch the TV show. Even though the actor playing Jamie looks the part, I want to hear Davina’s voice come out of his and all of the other actors’ mouths. Also, if Outlander is still overwhelming to you, try the Lord John books. My friend eased into Outlander after enjoying the Lord John books. I actually think I am more partial to that series. And Jeff Woodman does a great job narrating them.
I read the first 3 books and just couldn’t get through the 4th so I started listening to them. I really enjoyed the audio books! The narration was excellent!
I know this post is stale, but figured instead of starting a new post…I’m about halfway through Outlander and despite some people disliking it, I sailed past my 100 page rule. It’s starting to slow a bit for me and still 400 pages to go. Like most everyone else, The TBR list is giving me the stink eye. Is it worth finishing?
I would say yes. I got hung up about half way through. But then I was stuck at home one day feeling under the weather and ended up staying up most the night to finish it. It got SO GOOD!
Yes. It took awhile to get into the 2nd and 3rd books, too. I gave up halfway through book 3.
Book 3 is my favorite!!

I get impatient with slow paced books lately
Maybe a little at the very beginning of the first….but after that I devoured them all one right after another!!
Same here
yes. almost gave up

Not the first book, but by the 4th it was tough. That is when I went to audio which was awesome!
I started on audio on a road trip. Started the books when I finished the trip. I love it.
Good idea!
I gave up. I was about 130 pages in and bored to tears
I took a long time to get through the first half, but then sped through the last half at record speed. I never tried reading any books beyond book 1 though.
The first 150 pages, but KEEP READING. It’s so worth it. And all the “boring” stuff matters and comes into play later.

Uh, no. This is a well crafted story. Perhaps not your taste?
Yes.
It was boring to me until Claire meets a certain Highlander. Then it picks up pace.
That’s what I thought too
No.
No
Yep.
But I did have fun yelling at Jamie to just move to China or something to get away from Dude Randall.
I mean, seriously.
I couldn’t drag myself through this book. It just wasn’t for me. I don’t get off on rape, sorry.
No. I raced right in…as soon as she went through the stones, especially.
Yes the first one starts slow. I stopped reading the fourth book. I think I just needed a break from an epic read
Nope, didn’t have a problem until about book #4 when it got to be a bit of a slog. I persevered and I’m waiting for her to finally finish book #9
The first book was a little slow starting. I got through the first 4 before I gave up.
Ok glad I’m not the only one. Maybe I’m just in the mood for a light happy read right now
It is NOT a light, happy, read, lol. Those two just cannot get a break!
I returned to it 2 years later to give it a second chance and am extremely glad I did! But I had to get through like 200-250 pages before I was invested. Worth the commitment IMO.

Yes, but it was worth the time!
Yes. Stick with it. So worth it…
No. It was way harder to stop at the end. ?
Yes but I started with Dragonfly in Amber. I read outlander before the series started. That was harder
The first books were good for me but I think they became a bit bogged down with details in the later books
No but book 3 was harder to start for me.
Yes, keep going!
Ok I’m glad I’m not the only one, I started it and looked through here to see if anybody else felt the same ??
I just couldn’t do it. ?
@Melissa I’m on chapter 8…. determined to finish it
@Maggie i don’t have enough patience
That was the best…just saying.

Thanks 🙂 I do have an 11 hour drive ahead of me!
@Maggie You will fall in love with the series.
Davina is Phenomenal!

No I loved them all
