Iv literally just finished it aswell!. I thought it was brilliant even tho it did take me a while to read it. Lol. In what way do you miss categorized? Xxx
@Mandy I, too, thought it was a great story, and very well written, but in my opinion, it’s much more historical romance than fantasy; the time-travel element is really the only thing putting it in the fantasy category, and they really didn’t mention it too often!
@Cheryl ?? I never really thought about it like that. Yes I think your right. I dont think I’m going to jump the next book right away. It upset me at one point lol.(silly I know). As much as I loved it. Xx
Loved the book. But it pissed me off a couple of times a well. The spousal abuse was the first that drove me out of my mind, and then the way it the pedophil and nature of the Duke was downplayed.
@Cheryl The time travel itself is not mentioned a lot, but the constant reminder of Claire’s education as a nurse from another time AND a person who knows largely what will come is a constant in all the books.
@Teddie lol soft porn! it’s not enough of anything to be considered porn. What three steps below soft porn. It is a more realistic interpretation of how people act that are attracted to one another
@Teddie lol I did not mean it as an insult and sadly I’m single.? So no joy there but when you post on a public forum I thought it was the intention to converse with the people in the group. But I have taken note and I will not comment to you again
@Cleopatra bless sometimes you can have more fun when your single ?????. I loved the book but i think the tv programme took it to far sometimes. So stopped watching it. Xx
@Mandy I’m not a fan of the TV show in the book a lot of the story was explained in the character’s thoughts and I don’t think they are getting to correct point across. I am a total fanatic for the book series so I watch and criticize while at the same time giving my support.
But there is no prove of travelling in time ..so it has to be fantasy ..the fantasy genre has many different options …I read a thriller recently and there was a lot of romance and I can’t stand it but still also a lot of killing so it was still a thriller cos in genre romance you wouldn’t expect a mass murderer
Only the first book meets the parameters of romance. If you read the entire series it’s historical fiction and to a lesser extent, also science fiction set in history. There are large portions of the later books set in the early 1980s.
Gabaldon researches each of her books for several years and the entire series is historical fiction. However since her books touch on so many genres she herself has said they don’t fit into any one genre.
If you’ve only read the first book, you may think so. When you’ve read all 8, it’s historical fiction, romance, mystery, fantasy all rolled into one series.
It’s set in history…that makes it historical fiction! How do they get to the historical period? Time travel. Does time travel truly exist? No. That makes it historical fantasy. Don’t forget there are witches too.
Historical fiction. The only fantasy element is time travel. Substitute that with amnesia and a bit of schizophrenia and the book would be pretty close to the same. J/k, I loved this book, but I do think it is more history romance than fantasy
I see what your saying because wiccans aren’t witches, but for the time period wasn’t there a group of people referred to as witches…some lady who probably practiced herbal remedies and such that was labeled a witch due to ignorance…history is full of this
Oh and I never made it passed the first few chapters I have no reference for this story…I like historical I like romance I love science fiction…this story was not my jam…I just live alone and have no book friends irl so was looking for a friendly debate ??
I think it’s kind of weird that people are saying that time travel would be fantasy. The same people are also saying time travel can not exist. When time travel is clearly a science fiction element because it could possibly exist, but we currently do not understand how and would need further scientific understanding to understand how it would work. That at the same time is what I disliked about this book. It explored some medical science but the main character didn’t even think about time travel until the end of the book. She just tried to live a regular life in that time period. It was like the author just used time travel as an excuse for cheating and to write in the time period that they wanted to, instead of actually writing a story about time travel. A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court, is a much better book as it is actually about time travel.
So in short I agree with you I think this book pretends to be a lot of things that it is not in order to get more readers.
I always look at goodreads when I’m on the fence about a genre a book is. I’m almost done with the series and would say it ticks a lot of genre’s boxes. But if I had to pick one – I’d say historical fiction. The time traveling is such a small part of it.
I read mainly fantasy and this one was nothing like other books in the genre. The only element that read like fantasy was the time travel part, but it wasn’t a main component of the book, its not like they jump to multiple eras in time or back and forth. For me it’s more historical fiction
Mis-catergoized by who? The store you bought it at? Your own preconceived notion? It’s not a new discussion, ask the author and she will say, fiction. just fiction.
@Edward, ummm…. miscategorized by the industry, because, you know, *they do that*! It might be an old discussion to you, but it’s not to me; and the author can say anything she wants, but the *industry* will continue to sub-categorize fiction, and in my opinion….they put this book in the wrong sub-category!!
I own a bookstore. More than once I have thought about just making it all fiction, but there are genre lovers who will kill me, so I ignore that idea. Each store or chain makes it’s own call. Mine are in Romance.
@Edward, many, if not most, books have a category designation on the spine… that’s the publishers, not the stores. I agree with your call, though I called it *historical* romance, being that the category of “romance” has its own sub-categories!! ??
Iv literally just finished it aswell!. I thought it was brilliant even tho it did take me a while to read it. Lol. In what way do you miss categorized? Xxx

@Mandy, not silly at all! The scenes rationalizing spousal abuse by comparing it to child abuse really pissed me off!!
Yeah i get what you mean. Xx
Loved the book. But it pissed me off a couple of times a well. The spousal abuse was the first that drove me out of my mind, and then the way it the pedophil and nature of the Duke was downplayed.
… but it describes very accurately how these things were percepted at the time!
@Bente, ‘perceived’… but yeah, it does!
@Cheryl Thanks 🙂 I should have Googled it befor posting.
@Cheryl The time travel itself is not mentioned a lot, but the constant reminder of Claire’s education as a nurse from another time AND a person who knows largely what will come is a constant in all the books.
@Bente, true, but it still seems to focus more on the romance!
I thought it was soft core porn lol didn’t like the book at all
@Teddie, my brother used to call it “girlie porn”! ?
@Cheryl lol love it…girlie porn
@Teddie same.
@Teddie lol soft porn! it’s not enough of anything to be considered porn. What three steps below soft porn. It is a more realistic interpretation of how people act that are attracted to one another
@Cleopatra really well thing must be interesting at your house..plus don’t remember asking for your opinion
@Teddie lol I did not mean it as an insult and sadly I’m single.? So no joy there but when you post on a public forum I thought it was the intention to converse with the people in the group. But I have taken note and I will not comment to you again

@Cleopatra yeah I understand what you mean
Xx
In the stores around here are romance not fantasy.
It’s fantasy
@Connie, that’s what they say, but I read a *lot* of fantasy, and this definitely reads much more like historical romance!
Our stores put it as romance. She has never been in fantasy in any of the stores I have been in
I think it covers many genres anyway
Yeh. Certainly not historical fiction.
New genre: Historical Fantasy??
If you’ve only read the first book, you may think so. When you’ve read all 8, it’s historical fiction, romance, mystery, fantasy all rolled into one series.
Oooo…I really need to start this series. I thought it was primarily historical romance. YAY for more fantasy!
And science fiction.
????????????
It’s set in history…that makes it historical fiction! How do they get to the historical period? Time travel. Does time travel truly exist? No. That makes it historical fantasy. Don’t forget there are witches too.
Historical fiction. The only fantasy element is time travel. Substitute that with amnesia and a bit of schizophrenia and the book would be pretty close to the same. J/k, I loved this book, but I do think it is more history romance than fantasy
The witches are fantasy too.
@Hannah but are they….? ?
@Stacey, well they perform spells.
Witchcraft is just science that isn’t fully understood yet, and could all be real.
Especially the way it is portrayed in this book.
Because it’s not really that fantastic or other worldly
Witchcraft is fantasy. Witches perform spells as I said, and make potions.
Isn’t that what witches do in real life too?
Witches aren’t real. There are wiccans that are real but witches are fantasy with black hats and brooms.
I see what your saying because wiccans aren’t witches, but for the time period wasn’t there a group of people referred to as witches…some lady who probably practiced herbal remedies and such that was labeled a witch due to ignorance…history is full of this
Witches perform spells and create magic. Wiccans create herbal remedies.
Anything can be real.
Also the only three witches you really interact with in the first book are doing real life things
They shouldn’t be called witches then. Having witches makes something fantasy.
Hannah Bekka Harman if I say tomato tomahto will it piss you off if we agree to disagree
Oh and I never made it passed the first few chapters I have no reference for this story…I like historical I like romance I love science fiction…this story was not my jam…I just live alone and have no book friends irl so was looking for a friendly debate ??
It’s because Diana Gabaldon says it’s more than a love story. That’s why she says it’s historical fiction.
As you move on in the series, you’ll get way more history. And possibly knowing about herbs. 🙂
I think it’s kind of weird that people are saying that time travel would be fantasy. The same people are also saying time travel can not exist. Time travel can be fantasy and/or sci-fi, it just depends on the means.
But yeah, I agree on your second opinion. Lol
I always look at goodreads when I’m on the fence about a genre a book is. I’m almost done with the series and would say it ticks a lot of genre’s boxes. But if I had to pick one – I’d say historical fiction. The time traveling is such a small part of it.

@Nair, that’s what I thought! Historical *romance*, to be specific!
Mis-catergoized by who? The store you bought it at? Your own preconceived notion? It’s not a new discussion, ask the author and she will say, fiction. just fiction.

Who cares? It is just a label. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Most men will not like it.
I love the books and the TV series
This is a running joke in the world of Outlander. ?
Doesnt matter what its catagorized in, it’s the best lol
