You know, I can read anywhere, under just about any circumstance, tv, crowded places, in the park, anywhere, but I don’t like music playing otherwise. I mean if there’s music in a restaurant or someplace I can ignore it but at home that radio or player has to be off. It’s strange that I’ve never really thought about it at all.
No, not at all. I just mean it’s probably always distracted me at home but I’ve never thought about it. It’s just autopilot. If there’s music playing and I’m reading at home or someplace that I have control of the music, I shut it off.
Sometimes and it’s funny because some songs automatically bring back scenes from the book I was reading and sometimes when I think of a book I can almost hear the music I listened to.
Like the book the Oath makes me think of breaking Benjamin
Sometimes they keep me focused and often (if I listen to the same set of songs) I will associate those some with the book. But they are times where I will get lost in a daydream because of the music. I tend to only listen to music when reading my favorite genre (romance) as those I get pretty sucked into and can read nonstop for hours. When I try reading outside my go to genre, I don’t do music. As, I get distracted way too easily with those. (They also take me longer to read though)
Yes to music in general but not Symphony. I have observed that depending on the genre that I am reading coupled with the music, the plot/characters feel more connected or strained. Say for example I am listening to R&B or Pop (old school) and reading a romance novel certain scenes gets either awkward, steamy or just down right cheesy sweet.
No, I am too auditory. I have to read in total silence or I start singing or humming along. Even classical is a problem. Before long the book becomes a distant memory! LOL! ?❤️?❤️
No, but if I am reading a book that mentions a song, I almost always have to stop reading, relisten to the song if I already know it and if I don’t know it track it down, listen to it and try and decide if it fits with the storyline,
My family is musical and we are all known to just break into song (singing) when something reminds us of a song. So, no I cannot read with music. LOL. ?
I love the website http://noisli.com/ It allows you to create white noise in the background. You can blend together things like, “campfire, crickets, waves” or “fireplace, coffee house, thunderstorm.” So many options!!! They have an app too but I always just go to the website
Amazon music has a great classical for readers playlist. Other times I’ll just tell Alexa to just “play Mozart”. Has to be classical tho, any other type is distracting.
Yes, depending on where my mind is at. I’m a musician by trade and have studied composition enough that if my mind is firing in the comp department it’ll be distracting but most days I can have romantic era classical playing while I read.
I sometimes listen to classical, but not bombastic symphonies, however. Chamber music or classical piano, violin, or harpsichord works. If I’m reading something very modern I may go for light jazz.. Kenny G type stuff. But silence is fine. I can’t read with vocal music on.
No. When I listen to classical I like to immerse myself in the music. Same thing with a great book. I can tune out other noises pretty well except for news.
When I would study or read for school I would listen to the Piano Guys on Pandora. Good background noise to drown out people talking or to just have noise when I was alone.
Love soft classical music in the background when I read.
Sometimes (classical) but I prefer to listen to my fountain
Country
Not really. It usually distracts me.
Sometimes. I like classical and piano music ?
No. Too distracting.
No, like it quiet.
No, especially if I know the music…it becomes distracting
No but I build puzzles while listening to audiobooks
Good idea!
I do. Can’t have words though
Definitely without words or it becomes distracting…?

Now that i made u think about it, you ll maybe feel distracted…sorry ?
No, not at all. I just mean it’s probably always distracted me at home but I’ve never thought about it. It’s just autopilot. If there’s music playing and I’m reading at home or someplace that I have control of the music, I shut it off.
Yes
Yes, it has to be classical or I start singing along to the words ???
No
I do.m
Sorry what’s the m in “i do.m” ?
@Abdussalam its typo..
What I meant is that I do listen to music while reading..
Okay thanks..happy reading happy listening
I love to through on a classical station on Pandora! It makes me feel fancy lol
I actually can’t do that , I get distracted ??
My preference is quiet, but I can read anywhere. I wouldn’t put turn on music on purpose to read.
No. It has to be extremely quiet for me
So you can’t read on a train or while waiting in a hospital or …u know the places we go and have to wait until our errand is done?
If it’s quiet… if there’s a screaming kid or people being ridiculous then no.
If there’s just whispering and regular noise then yes lol
I’ve tried, but I can’t concentrate!!
No. I usually have to have it completely quiet or my husband playing video games.
No
I listen to music.. would be highly unlikely to be a symphony – not my thing… music rarely distracts me…
I have also been known to sing to my 3 year old as I read… (on these occasions- probably not much reading really done!)?
Sometimes and it’s funny because some songs automatically bring back scenes from the book I was reading and sometimes when I think of a book I can almost hear the music I listened to.
Like the book the Oath makes me think of breaking Benjamin
Dont know that book or the music
Sometimes I listen to music while reading. Usually if I do, it’s music with lyrics.
You re among the minority because lyrics distract…happy reading

@Amy happy reading
Yes generally only classical
Symphonies only, yes!!!
No I can’t, my 17 year old daughter listens to symphonies whilst studying though.
I listen to classical music.
Maybe you can try this sometime. ?
I have my radio tuned to the classical music station. No lyrics to distract and it’s generally uplifting and relaxing.
Not if it’s anything I need to concentrate on, or want to savor, it divides my focus.
I prefer silence, but can block anything out if i must.

No I will start to sing and get distracted
Sometimes, but it has to fit the book.
No I need silence.
Sometimes I seek out music from the era of the novel. Sometimes the author makes it easy and offers titles and composers.
I need silence too – no distractions
I do. I listen to classical. Something soothing, Bach, YoYo Ma mostly
Sometimes, especially if hubby is watching a tv show I don’t want to hear. Headphone time with my book.
No?
Nope. If I’m enjoying my book, I’ll completely block it out. If I’m only sorta into my book, the music will distract me
Sometimes, but yes, usually classical.
No
A lot of times. Instrumental.
Symphonies rock!
Yes!
No i usually use the tv as background noise
No
Many times. Classical is usually perfect.
Yes. Sometimes.
Yes, instrumental jazz, classical or new age
I do I think it adds to a scene
No, I am too auditory. I have to read in total silence or I start singing or humming along. Even classical is a problem. Before long the book becomes a distant memory! LOL!
?❤️?❤️
Nope
Yes, I listen to music while I read, most of the time. Smooth Jazz is best for me.
No, but if I am reading a book that mentions a song, I almost always have to stop reading, relisten to the song if I already know it and if I don’t know it track it down, listen to it and try and decide if it fits with the storyline,

I like music when i read either some relaxing christian or some rock is good 🙂
Sometimes
No…its just me and my book at that particular time. I listen to music while doing other chores like cleaning…..
I don’t personally but I like to listen to it when the bookstores play it.
I can’t, I need quiet or else I can’t concentrate. It’s hard for me to focus as is ?
Nope
Jazz, classical guitar, and occasionally heavy metal
Yes classical music
Hahaha. I listen to any kind of songs when I am on the bus and there is noise around me.
No way
Classical music, very soft as background.. helps mask street noise and the sound of my cat snoring.
No,can’t concentrate.
yes, I actually bought a CD called “Bach For Book Lovers” and it is perfect.
No
I listen to music when I write on my journal.. not when I read.. ?
Sometimes
Only when my wife is watching TV and then with the required headphones.

Ohhh I’m going to use this in my classroom! Thanks
@Kimberly I also use it in my classroom as well!!! So calming ?
Nope
Classical sometimes
Amazon music has a great classical for readers playlist. Other times I’ll just tell Alexa to just “play Mozart”. Has to be classical tho, any other type is distracting.
Yes just really quiet classical music or there are some videos on YouTube of birds chirping that I like
Never.
Only when studying; not when reading for enjoyment.
ditto
Yeah I do
Could, but don’t
No!!!
I read wherever, in the car with radio, in the house with tv, walking down the street, in the checkout line, wherever I have two minutes.
I always have the TV on. I cant sit in silence. Ups my anxiety
Most of the time I do! I can’t stand reading in silence so I need something in the background. I love listening to movie scores ♥️
Enya!
Yes, depending on where my mind is at. I’m a musician by trade and have studied composition enough that if my mind is firing in the comp department it’ll be distracting but most days I can have romantic era classical playing while I read.
Sure, whatever suits the book. Not usually classical.
I listen to all kinds of music. I don’t like silence, it creeps me out.
Hell yeah
No ,I don’t. It distracts me. So I prefer reading in silence.
No, I don’t!
quiet ~

Music, tv… I focus better with background noise.
Never. I don’t have distractions around me.
Lol I’ve tried and I end up listening to the music more and find my self re-reading entire paragraphs.
Depends on the music & how loud it is
I can listen to instrumental soft music, but anything with lyrics is distracting. I can read words or I can listen to words, but I can’t do both.
No.
When I would study or read for school I would listen to the Piano Guys on Pandora. Good background noise to drown out people talking or to just have noise when I was alone.
No. I find music distracting when I read. I think I’m in the minority though..
Just had this conversation with two young readers. One liked listening to music and the one smart one agreed with me, no music.
I like the sound of silence.
Yes, sometimes… Actually nothing I can sing along with… Otherwise I end up singing losing track of the plot!
Haha.. that’s why I don’t do music while reading too.. ??
I always have music in the background when reading.
