My 9y/o kid has just finished reading Harry Potter. What could be a worthy book to suggest now?

Percy Jackson
Eragon series, Peter and the Star catcher’s.

Inkheart, Miss Peregrine
Yes Inkheart!
Percy Jackson – hunger games – eragon
Among the Hidden & Guardians of Ga’Hoole!
Both of these are excellent choices!
School for good and evil
I suggest avoiding jumping into another fantasy franchise, since most of them don’t come close to Harry Potter. Maybe avoid another series too, and let him try some stand-alone books.
Carl Hiaasen’s “Hoot” and Louis Sachar’s “Holes” spring to mind
“Millions” by Frank Cottrell Boyce
“Matilda” by Roald Dahl
“Once” by Morris Gleitzman
“Freak the Mighty”
by Rodman Philbrick
Thank you, I’ll check them all out for sure.
@Marzio Holes is a wonderful book!

My son really liked the Mysterious Benedict Society books.
Pendragon series was enjoyed by my son
Eragon. Just dont let them watch the movie
My daughter read Harry Potter when she was 10 then promptly started The Wheel of Time. It took her a year and a half, but she finished it.
Percy Jackson series or anything by Rick Riordan, or the Artemis Fowl series.
Tiffany Aching series by Pratchett. I second Nevermoor
I love the Harry Potter series. I just don’t like the author.
Percy Jackson Series or the Inkheart trilogy. Or Howl’s Moving Castle.
Gregor the Overlander series, Septimus Heap series, Charlie Bone series and then I also second Percy & Pendragon.
It’s been a year and my 9 year old is still in book hangover mode. Nothing else has measured up. She’s losing interest in reading. It’s so sad. ☹️
Start again. My oldest is 24. She has re-read them countless times.
I guess you have to move on another league. If she feels like has already had the best in fantasy, just try a different genre 😉
@Marzio we just started Anne of Green Gables. Fingers crossed!
I loved the Wizard of Oz books growing up.
Percy Jackson series!!
Read all the HP? Cornelia Funke is great, inkheart.
Hunger Games?
Ooh yeah!!
Percy Jackson series
My 5th graders were obsessed with “The Rangers Apprentice” series.
Percy Jackson is also a great series for kids.
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett! 🙂
The Artemis Fowl series or Percy Jackson!
Wolf Brother series
Of course, eoin colfer!! Artemis fowl is fantastic!!
Percy Jackson. It’s one of the best. And there is a follow up series to it!
39 Clues

Bartimaeus Trilogy https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WKNULFO
Echorium sequence by Katherine Roberts.
Maximum ride series by james Patterson!
Wildwood Chronicles
How about some classics. Treasure island. Mark Twain novels
The Percy Jackson series is pretty good.
The Narnia chronicles, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
And all the other ones. ?
Well, meanwhile we’re having our constructive investigation, the not-so-little-anymore kid of mine has found The Golden Compass on my e-reader and is on 44% (how can he read so long while travelling in the car remains a mistery to me).
So I guess I’ll take note of each suggetion you so kindly gave us for the next book.
Thanks again everyone for all the nice comments!
Great choice. ?
@Laura it was actually available for free download from Amazon some time ago. So, not exactly out of any selection 🙂
??
“Nevermoor-The Trials of Morrigan Crow” by Jessica Townsend.
(Book One in a series), and “Wundersmith-The Calling of Morrigan Crow”
(Book Two), and “Nevermoor-Wundersmith”
(Book three, not yet released.)
These books are so great! ?
Check out James Nichols’ Arianwyn series – so far this consists of two books. More will follow shortly!
My 5th graders liked it.
anything by Rick Riordan, Anne of Green Gables, Huckleberry Finn.
The amulet of Samarkand series
Brilliant, very funny, very exciting books! And I am NOT a fantasy fan!
That is the name of the first book. It’s actually called the Bartimaeus trilogy. Also, miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children .
And the incarnations of immortality series, by Piers Anthony.
The Hobbit
Too young for Tolkien
So You Want to be a Wizard Series. Diane Duane.
Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson.
If he’s up to Harry Potter, he might be up for The Reckoners Trilogy by Sanderson as well. It’s technically a young adult book though.
Akata witch and Akata Warrior. I feel like I’m always recommending this in here, but it’s known has Harry Potter in Africa. It’s only two books, but they are really good.
And of course The Hobbit, my favorite book from childhood.
The Fablehaven books were also really great.
The Edge Chronicles
One of my favourites is ‘The Bartimaeus Trilogy’ by Jonathan Stroud. The first part is called ‘The Amulet of Samarkand’. The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer is also very good. Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and Coraline are also excellent. Happy reading!
I love the Bartimaeus trilogy!
Neverwhere is my favorite by Gaiman.
Glad to know that you love The Bartimaeus trilogy, @Julia! Bartimaeus is such a cool character, isn’t he? I love ‘Neverwhere’ too. Such a wonderful book. Glad it us your favourite.
Neil Gaiman: The Graveyard Book
I was indeed looking for both something similar in style to Harry Potter and also a different kind of books, such as classics (nobody here has mentioned Pinocchio, Peter Pan…) or stand alone titles.
Mainly though I’d like to find a tale of adventure that, without being expressly formative, would be somehow edifying for a kid.
OHHH! Also check out ‘The Divide’ by Elizabeth Kat! I LOVED that book around that age! Super awesome adventure, about a boy in a world where Humans and Science are mythological things, yet magic and every monster myth is real! Well worth a read, even as an adult, I think.
Peter and the Star Catchers is Peter Pan, it explains how it all started.
The invention of Hugo Cabret, the mister Lemoncello’s books
Amber Chronicles. High fantasy without any of the gory or sexy details found in a lot of today’s fantasy (not that I dislike that stuff). Fast paced too and absolutely fucking amazing!
In case you wonder how it ended, we’re now reading The Neverending Story.
This time I want to read it with him, so that I can understand when he talks to me about the book (with Harry Potter I had no clue).
We’re halfway and we’re enjoying it; I admit that maybe I like it more than him, it’s truly a great tale!
The princess bride.
Narnia series is what my son started after HP.
There is also Percy Jackson and Wings of Fire(On my sons read-list)
Edge Chronicles, Artemis Fowl series, The series of unfortunate events, How to Train Your Dragon
Yesterday at a church activity for girls 8-11 one of the sessions was on choosing good books. About 20% of the room all suggested the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. It is one I need to look up because they all said how they found themselves lost in it. I know they’re fantasy books about wild cats.
