My 11-year old daughter just finished the Harry Potter series. How will she go on? What could she read next that could even be worth the effort?

The Land of Stories??
Fantastic series. My HP-loving daughters also love LoS.
My girls really liked the Percy Jackson Series and the Heroes of Olympus. They say Percy Jackson is first and then read Heroes.
It’s so hard. So a couple of suggestions – Rick Riordan series – all of them are great (not as beautifully written but so fun). The Dark is rising series is excellent. She may or may not be ready for The Golden Compass.
Time to wallow in despair before starting the series over. ?
I know a lot of young girls that love the Blody Jack series. Not as good as Harry Potter, but worth a try
The Lunar Chronicals!!
This!
Agreed
Percy Jackson?
@Janice, after Delaney read Harry Potter she read all the Rick Riordan boooks. There are a couple of series. And then she absolutely LOVED Shannon Messengers Keeper of the Lost Cities series.
The Grimm Sisters series
Rick Riordan!!
The Trials of Morrigan Crow (might be a bit young, but fun)
Several of the girls in my 5th grade class (I am a teacher) loved Chris Colfer’s Land of Stories series. I believe there are 6 books but I could be wrong. Also many kids love Rick Riordan and they learn a lot about Greek mythology from those books. If you want to go old school, there’s the Narnia series or A Wrinkle in Time. She may be a bit young for Hunger Games although I have seen some of the fifth graders reading those books also.
100 agree about lunar chronicles
Rick Riordan is a good choice. But, it’s probably best to tell her the truth – nothing will ever compare to the brilliance of Harry Potter and she will now spend the rest of her life searching for a series that is even just a fraction as good. She is ruined. She will have to reread the HP books until the end of time just like the rest of us ???
They are always my cure for reading slumps. If I just can’t get in to something, I pick up HP again from the beginning. I know the later ones are more complex, but I love the simple wonderment of The Philosopher’s Stone.
@Jamie that is exactly how she feels.
How about “The Uglies” series
My 10yo just finished Harry Potter and is moving on to Hunger Games, Divergent, and Percy Jackson. I also got her the Hogwarts Library and The Cursed Child to read.
@Roberta Yes! Cursed Child is excellent and, since it’s in play script format, can be a good challenge for an advanced reader!
The Fablehaven series was a blast too, but nothing compares to the Harry Potter series.
Charlie Bone series
I LOVE the golden compass series
Was going to suggest this as well! Love almost as much has Harry Potter!
The Unwanteds Series, The Lunar Chronicles
Miss Peregrines School for Peculiar Children. The books are fantastic, and not well represented in movie form. We’ve read all three, and there is a fourth one out now that I didn’t know about.
@Sandie It just came out!
@Cynthia I KNOW!! OMG. I saw it when we were at the store for something unrealted, and it was too late for me to spend any more money, lol. I’m getting it soon.
Has she read the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull? I read it as an adult and still loved it!
Also, Limony Snicket – A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Chronicles of Narnia
This is a great thread, not just for 11yr olds ?
@Soren I know! But for me the age is important to keep it appropriate!
@Janice oh for sure. I’m just saying, I’m picking up tips for *me*!!!
FWIW: I love the Riordan books, and the last alchemist ones that were recommended.
@Soren my son devoured Riordan’s books. I didn’t think of them for my daughter! He also liked the Alchemist books.
@Janice give it a go!
The Michael Vey series!
the fantastic beasts books
Land of stories
Hunger Games
I would think that’s a little intense for 11, no?
My son LOVED Harry Potter – when he finished, we got him the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan – he actually loved these MORE! I have yet to read them, but that series is 12 books, and there are more series/books we just bought him this Christmas (he basically read the 12 books in 10 months – even with a busy sports and school schedule).
Love Rangers Apprentice! The Percy Jackson series is also one of my favorites.
My son started these around 10. He loved them and was a big HP fan.
My son started Percy Jackson after HP
The Prydain Chronicles
The Hobbit
The Gates by John Connolly…there is a sequel and a few other books aimed towards the tween/teen demographic
Tamsin by Peter Beagle
Maybe the Dragon Riders books by Anne McCaffery…might be a little too mature depending on the child
A Wrinkle in Time trilogy
A Wizard of Earthsea and its sequels
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/lists/percy-jackson-book-series,
The Nicholas Flemel books (by Michael Scott) are good. Not AS good, but good.
The Xanth books by Piers Anthony are wonderful! Plus-there are a gazillion of them!
Land of Stories or Percy Jackson
Tamora Pierce’s quartets!
Let her mourn. And then start over!
That’s what I did!
The Guardians, Land of Stories, Percy Jackson series, Kane Chronicles, The Unwanteds, Keeper of the Lost Cities all have similar vibes.
Give her something bland because nothing will be good enough. Then slip her Hunger Games.
my daughter became OBSESSED with the Hunger Games after Harry Potter. She flies through the series and then starts over again. Worth a shot and I love that the main character
Is a kick-ass heroine! ?
Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson), Lemony Snicket, Hunger Games, Divergent, City of Ember
This trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen is so clever! When I taught 6th grade we had all the kids read it and everyone loved it so much!!
@The
Perigrins Home for Peculiar children. Great series!!!
The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. She might also like the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley.
I second the Sisters Grimm series. My daughter loved the Percy Jackson series as well after Harry Potter.
The Hobbit
The Finishing School Series by Gail Carriger
Witch High (excellent short story collection)
The Enchanted Forrest Chronicles
mysterious benedict books; pseudonym anonymous; artemis fowl
Discworld!
From my 15 year old recovered Harry Potter fan:
The Unwanted Series
Cursed Child (if she didn’t already go immediately to that)
Hunger Games
Fablehaven
Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series. Loved it.
Charline bone series is similar tho not as spectacular but my Harry Potter freak kid loved it too!
Susan B Cooper’s Dark is Rising books – first one called “Over Sea, Under Stone” – and SKIP THE MOVIE.
Percy Jackson series
I also like the Gregor the Overlander series.
Series of unfortunate events
Ursula Le Quinn the earth sea trilogy
Percy Jackson?
Warriors series by Erin Hunter (actually collaboration of 6 authors) https://www.warriorcats.com/ My daughter started when she was around 11 and still re-reads and draws these warrior cats. https://www.warriorcats.com/
Thank you so much! As always this is quite the list! We picked up four to try today from the library. I’m going to write the rest down!
My sons gave me the entire book series for Christmas!!!
Serafina series
From a coworker’s daughter: Raina Telgemeir: Drama, Smile, and Ghosts.
@Tammy she loved those years ago!
She also has some Babysitters Club books.
She said she’s currently reading the Maximum Ride graphic novels.
Oh yeah! My son started those too and enjoyed them
Nevermore and Wundersmith. So far only the two in the series but they are BRILLIANT. A great new Australian author being sold as the new JK Rowling.
Ender’s Game series. (I cried, don’t judge the book by the movie) Anything by Orson Scott Card. The Belgariad & The Malorean (both are 5 books series if I remember correctly) by David Eddings. All kinda old school but awesome. Plus they are both prolific writers and it will take ages to get through all of the books.
Hunger Games
I didn’t look too closely, but did anyone mention the Delirium series? That might be a good one, too.
Read them again!
I want to ditch all of my adult books and focus on reading all of these great suggestions!
@Nancy no one would blame or judge you. Go for it!
