I am really curious as to why you, or anyone else, will not give up on a book they are not enjoying. No-one is ever going to read all the good books out there (good for each individual) so why use time on something that will probably be ultimately unrewarding? I truly would like to understand this mindset.
I don’t totally give up on books either… I usually put them back in my to be read pile and try again another time. Sometimes tastes change, experiences change, life changes… what I found interesting long ago I don’t enjoy always as much now and what I like now, I may not have liked several years ago.
I also don’t give up on books. I will go a year or occassionally more before picking it up again. I have had a book I’m not enjoying now possibly because of distractions in my life,or not relatable become a favorite book the next time I picked it up
If I am not interested by the third chapter I try to figure out what is bothering me. It’s usually the quality of the writing and if that is the case I just stop and move on to another book.
About 100. If it hasn’t hooked me by then it’s either not for me, not for me right now, or truly bland. If something is incredibly horrible writing I might put it down a little sooner.
I like Nancy Pearl’s “Rule of Fifty”: People frequently ask me how many pages they should give a book before they give up on it. In response to that question, I came up with my “rule of fifty,” which is based on the shortness of time and the immensity of the world of books. If you’re fifty years of age or younger, give a book fifty pages before you decide to commit to reading it or give it up. If you’re over fifty, which is when time gets even shorter, subtract your age from 100—the result is the number of pages you should read before making your decision to stay with it or quit. Since that number gets smaller and smaller as we get older and older, our big reward is that when we turn 100, we can judge a book by its cover!
75, unless I really really hate it. I try at least 3 chapters. Except I like romance on occasion , but if they have sex in the first chapter, it goes back to the library, as I like plot in my books, I have the Internet for porn.
About 50 or so unless someone has said to give it more of a chance. I have rarely found, though, that if I don’t like the book 50 or so pages in, I like it 50 or so more pages in.
Highly contextual. Between 1 sentence and 1 page, but I reserve the right to abandon it at any time that the plot, character, or writing style displeases me.
No definite number of pages. Recently I got 3/4 through a book and gave up. I just wasn’t feeling it, though I may go back later. Usually it’s more like 50 pages or so. Right now I’m trying to read “We Shall Not All Sleep” by Estep Nagy. It’s a book club book, so I want to keep going but I think I’m going to give up.
Sometimes I know right off if the genre is something I want to read. Sometimes the writing is too simplistic so I give it 30-60 pages before I give up. with YA I like them to be intelligent and have a great story line. like the stories Uglies, Twilight or Harry Potter. Good stories fact paced.
100. Too often it does pull me in between 50-100 pages so I’m glad I stuck with it, but if it’s really poor writing, (not just “not catching me”) I’ll drop it earlier.

Ever since I was a kid I had a 100-page rule. Still stick to it ?
I do not give up. It may take me six months but I finish the book.

I understand putting a book aside and starting again a year or two later. It’s the dogged perseverance that I can’t relate to.
Me either. Once I’m invested it’s do or die. That’s why I’ve never started War and Peace ?
I also never give up on my book selection. It may however, take me 2 weeks but I will get through it!
In trying to read Eat pray Love but gosh I’m bored
That’s because the book is simple minded and boring. I am stupefied by its popularity.
@Janet yes! I put it down.

If it dont get me in the first chapter, then I dont finish… I like for a book to hook me in by the first few pages

Usually the first few pages will provide indicators. Not more than 50 agreed .

Between 50 and 100. Too many books in my pile from the library to waste time on something I am not enjoying!
from 50 to 100 depending on the length of the book
I stop reading when I stop wanting to get back to the book. I treat books like I treat men… If the book doesn’t call me, it doesn’t get to see me.
I love your attitude!
if i hate the prose, i don’t bother reading it
100 pages
If I start it. I finish it. Could be OCD could be determination 🙂
??
To the end of the “Sample” on my e-reader. If I get to the end and go “What! No!,” then I purchase the book and finish it.
10 pages or end of Chapter 1, whichever comes first.

10% or 50 pages or when it bores me to distraction
I like that! Thank you.
The writing style weighs heavily for me, more so than the topic itself-sometimes the opening paragraph is enough to make me stay or go.
Agreed. Poor writing is an immediate book-closer.
I never give up on a good,i will finish no matter what
Till the first eye roll, lol
40-50
About 2-3 chapters of a print book (unless the writing is REALLY poor), and about 20-30% of an eBook.
