Any suggestions for a book to read at the beach while on vacation?
Any suggestions for a book to read at the beach while on vacation? Ideally under 300 pages and available in paperback (so that it fits in my beach bag and doesn’t weigh too much).
Normally I prefer light fluffy books for beach reading but more serious books are welcome too as long as they’re engrossing. Some of my previous beach reads to give you an idea: Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, You’ll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein, and All These Wonders by The Moth.
Love and other consolation prizes by Jaime ford, just came out in paperback a bit ago
The Weekenders by Mary Kay Andrews
Light & fluffy: get a book of poetry by Ogden Nash. He cracks me up; I literally LOL.
Me too! I used to read Very Like a Whale to some of my freshman English classes. (There really is a lesson in it, plus, it’s delicious ?)
Bubbles Yablonsky
Alexander McCall Smith, Alan Bradley’s Flavia de Luce books.
I love Flavia De Luce.
For one more day
Elinor oliphant is completely fine, commonwealth, the nest
The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprux Sweeney
Loved Celeste Ng & Jessi Klein- maybe some David Sedaris would do?
Yes, I love David Sedaris!
The Matchmakers of Minnow Bay. I read it on the beach and enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine. Easy reading, but a substantive plot
I liked this one too!
I recently read Anne Tyler’s Vinegar Girl while at the beach and it was perfect — not too long, fun easy reading but not all fluff.
Try Lucky by Jackie Collins or Scandals by Barney Leason
Dorothea Benton Frank. Many of novels are set near the beaches in South Carolina. Very enjoyable! ?
The Rosie Project is a funny light read. If you liked Ng then try her other book Little Fires Everywhere. If you want something a little different try Terrible Virtue, a story about Margaret Sanger….VERY interesting.
I ended up liking Everything I Never Told You more than I liked Little Fires Everywhere, but they were both enjoyable books. I read the Rosie Project last year or maybe the year before but I still haven’t read the sequel (which seems like a great candidate for a vacation/beach book). I definitely want to read that Margaret Sanger book so thanks for recommending that too!
Crazy Rich Asians!
I’ve already read this but you just reminded me that I still need to check out the two sequels!
Anything Liane Moriarity or Jennifer Weiner.
Yes, Liane is a great beach read author! I read Big Little Lies on vacation a few years ago and then I felt a little bad that my relaxing beach book was about a murder!
Anne Tyler’s Vinegar Girl or another in the Hogarth Shakespeare series, Margaret Atwood’s Hagseed (a little less fluffy, perhaps, but delightfully playful)
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! Now I just have to narrow down the list so I don’t need an extra suitcase for all these books!
