@Cathy ‘s No Place I’d Rather Be. Her books have such strong, kick-ass women characters who overcome so much adversity.
Gilead by Marilynn Robinson. The goodness of the minister in this book, the love he has for his people, the expression of his faith profoundly affected me.
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. But loved Same Kind of Different as Me when I read a few years ago!
I would have to agree with the two people above me, @Elizabeth and @Johnna Small Great Things and Wonder.

I have to say Lilac Girls because of the meticulous research and the richness of the story. Most impressive debut ever.
