I don’t read a lot of super scary books but I remember scaring the pants off myself listening to Kathy reich’s deja dead on audio book after night shift coming home to an empty dark house.
I started this and had to abandon it because I couldn’t give it the concentration it needed. Hoping to pick it up again one day. (Maybe when my kids are all grown lol)
I just finished The Ruins by Scott Smith. It wasn’t the scariest book I’ve ever read, but it’s a great horror novel. Another great horror novel is House of Leaves. It’s disturbing on several different levels, and is a unique reading experience.
I’ve been slacking on reading it but “Dark Cities”. It’s a horror anthology. First story involves a murder and talking dogs. This is when buying a book based on the cover goes wrong. Lol
Following I’m about to start It so that’s probably going to be my answer ? Though my partner reads a lot of Jack Ketuchem and he tells me about them which gives me the heeby jeebys
It’s basically about a group of people that go to a haunted house, but everything about the story is ambiguous. To me that is very scary/disturbing. Shirley Jackson who also wrote The Lottery wrote this book. If you like stuff along those lines a great short story is The Yellow Wallpaper.
@Jen@Alec I’ve just finished reading it a month ago and I totally loved it!! It’s not only horror, but also a sort of “phycological mystery”. Loved it!
Level 26 Anthony Zuiker Psychological thriller. If you actually watch the digi videos that go along with it you’ll see why this book is freakin terrifying. My imagination was enough, thank you very much….
Oh, it is. And I read it very quickly. Primarily because I wanted to sleep without having nightmares lol. Very vivid descriptions and it brings you in really well.
Ouah ! C’est une affaire en or ça ! ? Je suis fan également de son style, et ses histoires sont fabuleuses, superbement bien trouvé, originales, bien racontées. Bref, je suis fan ?
Cauldron of witches. It was a book of short stories I found in the school library when I was in 4th or 5th grade. It scared me so bad I couldn’t finish it. I’d probably laugh if I read it now.
I’m currently reading house of leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I’m not spooked yet but it’s a cult classic that’s been labelled “the most terrifying book I’ve ever read” by many reviewers. It’s 705 pages and I’m only on 101 so I’ve got time to get scared!
Good luck! I have it too and it’s intimidating me because some pages you have to read a certain way. I don’t think I’m smart enough to figure it out lol
It by Stephen king. Not so much cause of the story but my copy has that bloody clown on the side and when I used to wake up in the middle of the night, he would stare at me. Yes, I banished to book to another place cause he scares me ?
The Shining. Was a child at the time and had already read several Stephen King books. They didn’t phase me. The Shining did. Lived in an old noisy house. Had to put The Shining down and have never bothered to pick it back up again.
Following ?
Pet Cemetery, that was terrifying
Definitely Pet Cemetary!
Who wrote it? 🙂
Stephen King
Thanks Joann!
It.
Better and different than the movie?
Yes! The movie was not scary. The book gave me nightmares all 3 times I read it. Even as an adult!
The Exorcist
I read this book and it scared the sh** out of me. The movie I can’t take seriously, and laugh at times, but the book was horror at its best.
@Alec The Omen was terrifying too.
Switching time
What’s it about?
True story about a woman with 17 personalities and her life from the doctors pov
That sounds incredible. Thank you for sharing!

Bird Box, but I don’t really read scary.
I’ve heard this name before. Do you know what it is about?
I was gonna say this too! It was so creepy.
I don’t read scary either, and Bird Box seriously freaked me out!!
Following as I’m yet to find a book that scares me.

House of leaves
So I have seen this numerous times at the store and have even skimmed through it. Is it worth the read? It looked, different.
its a difficult read, it’s all over the place, and at times hard to keep up with but I absolutely loved it when I got into it.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/HouseOfLeaves?from=Main.HouseOfLeaves
I started this and had to abandon it because I couldn’t give it the concentration it needed. Hoping to pick it up again one day. (Maybe when my kids are all grown lol)
@Danielle it’s definitely very challenging to read the way it’s laid out, it took me a while to actually jump into. But I promise it’s so worth it!
I actually keep it under my bed for the day I get to start again!
From what I’ve read it’s more a thought provoker? Is it also scary or just something that makes you reimagine the world around you?
Definitely a thought provoked but it’s also considered a horror and weirdly enough somehwhat of a romance
The mist
Cujo
House of Leaves, no question.
Scary stories to tell in the dark. Only time I ever got freaked
172 Hours on the Moon.
Following. Looking for horror not full of terrible language (good luck, right?)
Try Brother or The Devil Crept in by Ania Ahlborn. Female horror author and there’s not like an f-bomb in every other sentence.

Following
I’m about to start It so that’s probably going to be my answer ?
Though my partner reads a lot of Jack Ketuchem and he tells me about them which gives me the heeby jeebys
Haunting of Hill House. I read that book a year and a half ago and it still sneaks up on me sometimes.
Whats it about? A haunting style book is actually exactly what I am looking for!
It’s basically about a group of people that go to a haunted house, but everything about the story is ambiguous. To me that is very scary/disturbing. Shirley Jackson who also wrote The Lottery wrote this book. If you like stuff along those lines a great short story is The Yellow Wallpaper.
@Jen @Alec I’ve just finished reading it a month ago and I totally loved it!! It’s not only horror, but also a sort of “phycological mystery”. Loved it!
Also saying House of Leaves
Intensity by Dean Koontz

I should add I’ve read a lot of Stephen King – Pet Semetary, The Shining, Tommyknockers, etc. It is by far the scariest.
The Bible
Thank you all for your suggestions! I appreciate it. You can never have too much books to read:)
In tenebris by Maxime Chattam, it’ sa French book, and i did nightmares because of it… But it’s a super book
me too ! He’s one of my favourite author, especially with his saga “Autre-Monde” (I don’t know the title in English ^^)
Ouah ! C’est une affaire en or ça ! ?
Fight club
Nothing is more terrifying than this.
Cauldron of witches. It was a book of short stories I found in the school library when I was in 4th or 5th grade. It scared me so bad I couldn’t finish it. I’d probably laugh if I read it now.
I hate anything scary, so the worst I’ve read was Dollhouse by Anya Allyn. Gave me nightmares for weeks and I read it at like, 19.
The story about the little girl Nicole lepotter
The handmaids tale
Clearly !
This is my kind of thread! Can’t wait to try some of these ??
same ?❤
Cry blue murder
And Then There Were None. It’s not from the horror genre but I got scared as it got closer to the end.
I totally agree!
Ain’t no doubt about it .
This is one of my personal favorites.
I recently read a short book The Damaged by a very cool indie author Simon Law…not for the faint hearted!
Hell Island (Shane Schofield #3.5)
by Matthew Reilly. Small, but VERY mighty in its power to scare.
It
Pen pal by dathan Auerbach really scared me lol
.
Wait Till Helen Comes. As a kid.
The Exorcist.
Yeah… Me too. ??
Dracula. It was so eerie, gave me nightmares.
Haunted. By Chuck Palahniuk.
I STILL can’t get through “Guts” without taking a few breaks and deep breathing!!
The Exorcist-the only book I couldn’t finish!
My favourite horror book!
I’ve only ever watched the first five minutes of the film, though….can’t do visual horror at all ??
Bag of Bone by Stephen King. I was about 13-14 when I read it and I made sure I set the mood right. Home alone, late at night. ??
Ugh, I never finished that one. I was too scared after reading some chapters lol
I haven’t read a lot of horror books but I read Asylum/Sanctum/Catacomb by Madeline Roux & they lowkey gave me nightmares (I spook easy)
It. And Salem’s Lot
Books from Richard Matheson and Dan Simmons
I heard the vegetarian was creepy and “nightmarish”. Also, I just saw bookriot post that bird box was going to be adapted into a Netflix show/movie.
I just picked up birdbox. Excited!
@Natalie please review it when done! I’d be interested in knowing if it’s good. That’s a book on my TBR list.
