It’s The Great American Novel, in my opinion. Everything about America and the American Dream is in there. It’s not a hard read, either. Pay attention to the imagery.
I didn’t like it at all personally. I found it very confusing at parts, the ending took a little to understand what happened and the narrator was boring. The writing was the only thing I liked. Also how somen and coloured people were seen as was something I did not like, but that is something I can’t say anything about because that is how it was during the time period this was written in
I read it twice with years between readings. It’s not a book that I can read yearly because like Nick Carraway (though not to such an extent) I’ve been put in a position of being a reluctant confidence keeper and witnessing train wrecks in relationships. It’s one of those situations where I don’t want to spend time with some people – even when they’re fictional characters. That said, I agree that it’s beautifully written.
It is one of the best American classics of all time.Every time l taught it l saw something new. It is not just a story, although the story is intriguing. The language is poetic. A little research might help a reader see the nuances and many layers of the book,
I think it is quite beautiful- Fitzgerald was definitely a gifted writer. I can understand why some people don’t go for it. Although it has a plot, I don’t think it is plot driven, if that makes sense. It’s more about imagery and contemplation regarding the state of the human mind (for some) of that era.
For me it was only okay. I wasn’t blown away but perhaps it has something to do with the fact that i already know how it’ll go. Because i already watched the movie years ago before i was able to read the novel. Apologies ill post my review of the Gatsby here. This is from my personal library app hope this will help.
Review
This book is one of the few that makes me want to look back and see where it all went wrong? Is Daisy the one to blame? Or Gatsby’s stubbornness? Its is indeed a tragic novel but it shows how far and how extreme we can go and do for love. Love is a beautiful thing until it breaks us.
I’ve read it three times, at intervals of about 5 years. I keep hoping that this time around I’ll “get it” – “it” mostly being all the hype around it. Maybe the writing style just doesn’t resonate with me. Maybe I can’t get myself to relate to a single character. Maybe it really is, as it always seems to me, a book about the suffering of people whose primary problem is the lack of real problems. Whatever it is, I’m sure I’ll try again in another few years, but I’m not too hopeful for a change in outcome.
There are some wonderfully written phrases in that book. I truly enjoy Fitzgerald’s writing, such a beautiful talent to describe inexplicable feelings.
Brilliant narrative – The narrator, Nick Carraway, gives a subjective account of what he thinks he knows about that mysterious Jay Gatsby. The title character is rather unlikeable, actually, and that’s what I enjoyed the most. The Roaring Twenties are also a major theme in the book. In the thread, I read some of the people in this club mention the movies… I haven’t seen the most recent one (starring Di Caprio), but I would advise the 1970s film with Robert Redford!!!
Every once in a while I like to read a book without a happy ending and The Great Gatsby is it. One of my favorite lines in literature- Gatsby? What Gatsby? And sometimes a movie doesn’t due a book justice but I thought the latest version does.
Thank you. I’ve never been able to finish it, or really get more than started. I’ve skimmed the movie and a read synopsis and I cannot find it the least bit interesting.
I agree with @Valerie, I found it frenetic, hectic, self indulgent and a miserable read.. I finished it thinking I would find some of what all the hype was about. I didn’t and I’ve never recommended it.. I find that with much “literature” that’s been over hyped though.
Mari Sisson I understood the commentary on society. I just didn’t like the book. I honestly didn’t care about the characters, and that’s where the book failed to me
It’s one of my favorites but I do get why some don’t like it. And if you’re the type of reader who needs likable characters it’s not the book for you. Even Nick who is the least dis-likable (new made up word) isn’t a decent person. It was a statement about the era and about a specific set of people (Scott and Zelda’s crowd) during that era. It has to be read and understood as such.
I recently gave up on the current “great American novel” The Son by Phillip Meyer. Didn’t care about the characters. A character can be evil, bad, indifferent, lazy, indolent, and definitlely “dis-likeable”, but I have to care what happens to them and, to a certain exent, why they are that way. Gatsby gave me none of that
@Kathy, I don’t need likable characters but I do need a storyline that holds my interest, that pulls me in, and keeps me wanting more.. this one did not.. but that’s what’s so great about reading.. thank goodness we all don’t love the same things all the time. how boring that would be.
I thought it was just alright, but maybe that’s because I read it in high school when it was assigned to me and I didn’t really want to read it haha.
lol well I saw the film and I wondered if the book is interesting as the film anyway thanks for your opinion ♥
I didn’t like it much?? don’t know why…couldn’t understand everything but I looooved the movie!
lol yeah me too that’s why I asked about it I saw the film and I wondered if the book is much interesting than the film
I saw the movie first and I loved it so I wanted to read the book..but I was disappointed… but it’s just my opinion maybe you’ll like it
so I will read it and see thank you ♥♥
The book is so much better than the movie but it takes some work to understand the layers.
I had to read it for an English Lit class in college. I didn’t like it. I’d like to try it again though. That was in my early 20s.
oh really me too I can’t wait to star it enjoy reading it ♥♥
I felt the same way. When l read it again to teach it l was stunned at how much I had missed.
The book was very good. I liked it
In my top three favorite books.
Excellent read???
Love it. It’s one of my favorite classics.

It’s one of my favorite books.
GOod, but sad
Love it – so did Raymond Chandler, who said it had the grace of a five-string quartet.
I didn’t like it at all personally. I found it very confusing at parts, the ending took a little to understand what happened and the narrator was boring. The writing was the only thing I liked.

Love it – so beautifully written.
I am currently reading it and a little more than half done. I can’t seem to get in to it but I am determined to finish it.
I loved it! One of the books I am thankful was required during school or I might not have as much of an appreciation for it and other classics.
Over rated American novel
Love it.

The language is like good chocolate. Savor how Fitzgerald picks the perfect words to create an image and a mood.
I’ve tried a dozen or more times to read it and I’ve never made it.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely love it!
It is great, read it a few years ago and didn’t get the buzz about it, re-read it last year and loved it
My favourite book ever!
Good read.
Love it x
My all time favorite book.
A favorite
A colleague of mine called it a ;gift from the gods.’ I taught Their Eyes Were Watching God in concert to Gatsby – a gift from the goddesses.
That sounds amazing!
I personally didn’t like it, I found it flat and boring.
it proved to me that the wrong kind of love will cause people to do extremely wrong things.
Didn’t like it at all. Characters were aggravating and shallow without any real admirable traits that I can remember. Just my opinion though

Wonderful
The book is not a favourite, but I did love the movie…
Genial !!!
I have to say, I wasn’t keen. I re-read it a couple of years ago just to make sure, and that is one where my opinion hasn’t changed over the years.
I like reading ‘vintage’ books and I liked this one, even on the re-read.
One of my favs! I think about the green light often.
Very good.
loved it

Hate Fitzgerald. Hate Gatsby…entitled people who n e d to get a real job
Loved it. Glad I didn’t read it until I was in my 30s.
Love all his books, but this is my favorite!

I read it as a teen and again as an adult. I didn’t like it either time. Same goes for Catcher in the Rye.
It’s nigh unto perfect in structure, design, plot, character. I never understand why everyone doesn’t love this little book about the soul of America.
One of my favorites!
The art of storytelling!
Not a fan
Over rated
I tried it’s on my dnf shelf was bored
Loved it.

Good one.
bad book. i still shudder 40+ years later
Loathe it. I don’t understand why so many consider it one of the greatest ever written
Thank you. I’ve never been able to finish it, or really get more than started. I’ve skimmed the movie and a read synopsis and I cannot find it the least bit interesting.
@Sandra I was forced to read it in high school.

Was never a fan. My high school teachers got mad at me for writing a report that said I hated it and would never recommend it to anyone at all ever.
