It’s been one of my favorites for a long time. The descriptions of Gatsby’s parties are what got me interested in how food is presented in literature. It’s short, worth the read 🙂
It’s a grower. First time I read it I hated it. Second time I read it I didn’t enjoy it. The more and more I read it I love it. Now would class it as one of my favourites.
I hated it the first 2 times I read it. The 3rd time, I wrote an chapter by chapter analysis as to why it was garbage, but a classic. When I got to chapter 4, it clicked, and I love it
Definitely falls in the top five of all American classic novels. Well-written, beautiful, not a word wasted. Anyone who says it isn’t good doesn’t know what real literature is. 😛
Ugh. I hate that book so much. I hate all of the characters except for Nick, and frankly, I think Gatsby got what he had coming to him. Ugh. I hated reading that book so much. It is one of only a few books I will ever say that I straight up hate.
I hated this book. Its actually my least favorite book ever. I think all the characters are shallow empty flat characters. Which is likely what the author was going for. I have had to read this in at least three literature classes. Ugh.
Read it in hs and didn’t like it. Then I saw the movie and understood the plot better and now I love the book and have read it several tones. ? same thing happened with pride and prejudice… and les mis. For some reason with older books seeing a movie first helps me a lot
I loved it when I read it and I still think about it sometimes! That atmosphere and the writing style, they made a great impression on my mind! Definitely a favourite ?
I can’t stand it and barely got through it. I thought it was completely boring. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen and nothing ever did.
It’s a Great American Classic, so I got to the last page just waiting for my mind to be blown. It wasn’t a waste of time, but for me, I wasn’t on the edge of my seat. For reference, the only book I read over every few years is The Stand.
It’s a quiet masterpiece with some truly beautiful moments – and despite the mansion in West Egg where Jay Gatsby has washed up, it’s really a deeply Midwestern story – you can feel the heartbreaking tug of that rural life abandoned and mourned all through the book.
Tried to read it when I was a teenager but couldn’t get away with it. Tried again in my 40s and loved it. It captures a brittle time and timeless depictions of human impulses.
It was one of my favorite books I had to read because my English teacher in HS made me. It gave me what I thought was a good perspective of the “Roaring 20s” in the US
Fantastic read
Much better with subsequent read through
Sorry not for me.
The writing is interesting BUT I loathed all of the characters
Yeah, I didn’t have an issue with the writing itself, I guess. But if I dislike the characters, I’m not gonna like the book.

Hype
I found it mildly interesting. I’d reread it only because it’s a fairly quick read.
It’s a grower. First time I read it I hated it. Second time I read it I didn’t enjoy it. The more and more I read it I love it. Now would class it as one of my favourites.
I personally enjoyed it. It’s a quick read.
I hated it the first 2 times I read it. The 3rd time, I wrote an chapter by chapter analysis as to why it was garbage, but a classic. When I got to chapter 4, it clicked, and I love it
I prefer his other books
Just what the Thug Notes video on YouTube about it. Then you’re covered.
The only characters I actually liked were the narrator and Joridan Baker. Named my first daughter after her. The rest just irritated me.
I was bored but it was a book club read. I thought it more hype
I love this book and read it once a year.

I didn’t like it much. Maybe if try it again I’ll like it but it’s not high on my list
Classic. The rich are different. But not in a good way.
I read it in high school
It’s amazing ❤️
Amazing
I love the book. But I’ve never liked the movies. There’s something in the writing that doesn’t come through on film.
I’ve tried to read the book twice and watch two different versions of the movie. I couldn’t make it through any of them. I tried ??♀️
Brilliant book .. Loved the era, the setting, and the premiss that money can buy you a lot, but it can’t buy you love ..
Thanks for the input everyone!
I couldn’t get into it.
In my opinion few books actually earn the reputation they deserve as being true American classics of literature. This is one of those that earns it.
One of my favorites
Reading it again right now. I love this book.
Beyond boring
I liked it. It wad a sad ending.
Loved it! It’s so well written about the time period.
The movie however, took me a couple times to enjoy, as it doesn’t exactly follow historical accuracy for the time period.
Meh
One of my favorites ?
Loved it but such a tragic story
I went into it expecting to hate it but ended up loving it. The writing is so gorgeous
Definitely falls in the top five of all American classic novels. Well-written, beautiful, not a word wasted. Anyone who says it isn’t good doesn’t know what real literature is. 😛
Love it!!
One of my favorite classics!
Total classic, loved it!!
wonderful
Didn’t like it
One of the best books I’ve ever read ❤️
Love it, love it, ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!
❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️ OUT OF ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love it. Many classics are overrated. This one is not.
Exquisitely written. And a fascinating exploration of some of American literature’s defining themes and archetypes.
Regardless of the story it is so beautifully written that it is worth the read. I absolutely loved it
Ugh. I hate that book so much. I hate all of the characters except for Nick, and frankly, I think Gatsby got what he had coming to him. Ugh. I hated reading that book so much. It is one of only a few books I will ever say that I straight up hate.
@Katie same here! I get so much flock for it, but I hate this book.
@Jane My classmates and I all called Tom Super Douche.
Didn’t like it at all.
I hated this book. Its actually my least favorite book ever. I think all the characters are shallow empty flat characters. Which is likely what the author was going for. I have had to read this in at least three literature classes. Ugh.
Yeah! That was my issue. If I don’t like the characters, I won’t like the book.
@Katie I didnt like even one of them!
Wonderful, an American classic. Each time I read it, I get more out of it. I have read it at least 3 times
Read it in hs and didn’t like it. Then I saw the movie and understood the plot better and now I love the book and have read it several tones. ? same thing happened with pride and prejudice… and les mis. For some reason with older books seeing a movie first helps me a lot
@Debra But which movie? Redford or Dicaprio?
You might hate me for this, but DiCaprio ? I’m a sucker for musical movies
One of the better fitzgerald books, still have to read beautiful and the damned but i didn’t like tender is the night…
I loved it when I read it and I still think about it sometimes! That atmosphere and the writing style, they made a great impression on my mind! Definitely a favourite ?
My favorite!!! ????
One of the few books I had to read for school that I enjoyed at the time. Read it every few years. Simply beautiful.
Didn’t really care for it. Felt it was more style over substance.
I didn’t like it
Love it
Favorite movie
None of the characters have any likeable qualities, and yet it’s one of my favourites. It’s just so beautifully written ?
I read this about 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. I really liked the writing and the atmosphere.
One of my favorite classics ❤
Hated it! Hate the characters- shallow and never learn anything. I realize that’s what Fitzgerald was going for but blech!
Not my favorite. For me it’s “readable”. Not one to repeat.
I am a firm believer in supporting your local community library. So many opportunities there besides the books!
I can’t stand it and barely got through it. I thought it was completely boring. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen and nothing ever did.
I thought it was utter rubbish. Sorry.
It’s a Great American Classic, so I got to the last page just waiting for my mind to be blown. It wasn’t a waste of time, but for me, I wasn’t on the edge of my seat. For reference, the only book I read over every few years is The Stand.
The best reason for this book
I liked it!
I have seen the movie.
It’s a quiet masterpiece with some truly beautiful moments – and despite the mansion in West Egg where Jay Gatsby has washed up, it’s really a deeply Midwestern story – you can feel the heartbreaking tug of that rural life abandoned and mourned all through the book.
@Pat, now I want to read it again from your POV.
@Jennifer That’s a nice compliment.
you say it so eloquently
Well, thank you.
God I hate daisy
@Amy That’s what I came to say ?
Just ok
I didn’t really like it. I had to read it in high school but I have no desire to read it again.
Tried to read it when I was a teenager but couldn’t get away with it. Tried again in my 40s and loved it. It captures a brittle time and timeless depictions of human impulses.
