I find it overrated by bandwagoners heavily influenced trend biters reviewers. I finished it though, It’s okay. Not that superb and not that bad. It’s just okay. Maybe if I already lived in their era, I’d rate it 4/5, In our modern world, It can’t be rated that high. I can only give it 3/5. Thanks.
To me Tender is the Night felt more “difficult” to read, but I still loved both books. I think they leave an impression, just like the movie – the whirlwind of what is happening is the point, for me at least. It’s like a friend telling you a story about someone you might not know. This might sound silly, but for me both books were like reading with my eyes closed 🙂 Anyway, I’m sure there are plenty of books that excite you 🙂
I think it might be a little boring because I am not really into life in the 1920s?! I like certain things about it, but all in all, it is kinda boring.
The thing about it is that it’s a critique of the 1920’s. The people literally partied and drank all day and what did they leave us? Nothing much and that’s what F. Scott Fitzgerald showed through it.
Well, it’s also about how no matter how hard you work you will never be old money and therefore never worthy. “Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps” is a myth. Gatsby (although illegally) was rich enough but still not good enough for daisy, it wasn’t money it was status. And I think that’s still an incredibly applicable theme now.
SO boring. I just cannot understand the appeal. All the characters are either really obnoxious or completely dull. I found it utterly uninteresting and I just don’t get the hype AT ALL.
I love it, I’ve read twice, enjoyed a lot of the characterisation (obviously didnt LIKE the characters but thats kind of the point) and the view of Western Society’s hypocrisy.
Gatsby is more or less a time capsule of the jazz age. it still is however a “great American story”. For today’s writing tastes, Fitzgerald might come off as a bit stiff and stilted.
The Great Gatsby is a novel that is supposed to get a person to think about the time period in which it took place…if you just take it at face value and for the story…then you don’t get the full meaning.
I wouldn’t exactly say it’s boring. My problem with it is that it’s told from the POV of an onlooker, not a main character…but at the same time, we cannot expect the others to tell the story as it would not be coherent. Like Nick is the sane one.
I strongly agree. My thought is, it’s only boring to many because of the author’s representation of the theme. I didn’t enjoy it that much tbh, but I’d never call it boring. It’s pretty decent for its genre.
I did too! Never finished it.
Really? Never read it. So did you think the movie is better?
It was actually my favorite book that I had to read in school
Loved the movie!!
I loove it. One of my favorites. My dog is actually named Gatsby
Me. I was grossly underwhelmed by it.
I hated it!
Daisy was a skeeze
I have to read it for a college assignment, but I can’t go through it at all.
Maybe try to find it in an audio book & listen to it or listen & follow along in the book might go easier &faster listening to it
Amazing book. Read the beautiful and the damned, I think that’s better than great gatsby
Nope. Not just you. Hate the book.
I liked the language up until the ending of the book, wherein it felt rushed. I could almost hear the publisher breathing down Fitzgerald’s neck.
Omg loved the book until the end. What a fitting but still waste of assigned reading ?
Me
I had to read it for school. I wash my hands of it
I love it. I actually liked the movie (with Leo DiCaprio- I love him though) too.
I did! I had to put it down, I’m hoping to try again in 2018.
Found it terrible. The movie was better because of the art.
i hated the ending 🙁

I love love love The Great Gatsby!
i love the movie lol
The movie did a great job, I thought Tobey Maguire was perfect as Nick Carraway
Yep
read it at school and at uni found it borring
Wasn’t boring for me though it was just like the movie. If I knew it was so faithful I wouldn’t have watched before reading it.
I barely understood what i was reading when i had to read it for school
Snooze
The movie was all over the place also
Really hard to finish. Boring as heck
it was a v dull book
Total snore
I loved everything about it except the ending

Boring ….Never finished it.
It’s one of my favourites, tattoo’d the last line of the novel on my back. It’s as close to a perfect novella as you can get ?
I think it might be a little boring because I am not really into life in the 1920s?! I like certain things about it, but all in all, it is kinda boring.
It’s about the American dream and how false it is and elitist. I can’t think of a better subject for 2017.
The thing about it is that it’s a critique of the 1920’s. The people literally partied and drank all day and what did they leave us? Nothing much and that’s what F. Scott Fitzgerald showed through it.

All the world think it is boring
I’ve read it twice and both times I was bored
I actually really liked it and the movie adaption wasn’t too different.
It took me forever to get thru!! And that intro though! Who else skipped it?
I didn’t skip a part, and I am still in chapter 3. I started on the 28th of Nov. That’s totally not me.
It look me 2 months to read! Its not even a big book!
It’s one of my favorite books.
It was tedious 🙁 so overrated…
I did not enjoy it one bit. Thankfully it wasn’t that long
I love it.
I read it in high school….I thought it was boring. Then again I thought most of the required high school reads were boring.
SO boring. I just cannot understand the appeal. All the characters are either really obnoxious or completely dull. I found it utterly uninteresting and I just don’t get the hype AT ALL.
finally people that agree with me! I hated it!
So much hate on my favorite book! ? Where are my Gatsby lovers at??
It’s not hate really. We all agree it’s a good book. Just not one that we would read again. Know what I mean?
Haha no seems like a lot of hate to me, which is fine! Lol
Well…I don’t hate it. Just won’t read it again. Sorry
I love Fitzgerald. Gatsby is a favorite. I did hate Great Expectations
I️ actually like it
I didn’t like it either.
It’s not for everyone but I really liked it. I did like Tender is the Night better though.
I thought it was sad. So many of the characters were vapid. The only ones with any character was Nick and Gatsby
I love the film. Not read the book, rare but still lol
I agree
I read it twice (several years in between). It did not get any better with the second reading. I tried!
One of my all time favorites
I hated that book lol
I just could not make myself like any of the characters in the book. I’ve never liked the books or any of the movies.
I love it so much. I’ve read it about four times and each time it gets better
I didn’t like it
Me, too :):):)
I just downloaded it haven’t read it yet
I agree. I disliked it greatly.
Pride and Prejudice is even more boring…in my opinion.
I read it over forty years ago and didn’t care much for it. I did not find one character in it that I liked even one bit.
I love it, I’ve read twice, enjoyed a lot of the characterisation (obviously didnt LIKE the characters but thats kind of the point) and the view of Western Society’s hypocrisy.
im a senior and my class is actually studying it right now…i quite like it!
It’s not just you.
Gatsby is more or less a time capsule of the jazz age. it still is however a “great American story”. For today’s writing tastes, Fitzgerald might come off as a bit stiff and stilted.
Yeah me too
I love it!
Ditto!! ?
The Great Gatsby is a novel that is supposed to get a person to think about the time period in which it took place…if you just take it at face value and for the story…then you don’t get the full meaning.
It was a bit confusing as well at times.
I wouldn’t exactly say it’s boring. My problem with it is that it’s told from the POV of an onlooker, not a main character…but at the same time, we cannot expect the others to tell the story as it would not be coherent. Like Nick is the sane one.

I’m not a fan.
Mee
Oh, it is noce to hear that I’m not the only one ?
i haven’t tried reading it yet. i gave This Side of Paradise more than 100 pages & gave up, though.
A book group I’m in read it last month. I was the only one who liked it ? everyone else thought it was boring or too out there
I love that book but I feel it’s one of those books you have to have a little life experience under your belt to really appreciate
