I didn’t like it at all. Had to read it my junior year of high school and couldn’t stand it. Later on(my senior year) I tried to read it again on my own time because “maybe since I was forced to read it, I didn’t like it.” Nope. Still hated it. It’s a very overrated book.
I was going to say the same thing. I’m more indifferent too it. Because I had to read it for school and friends really loved it. There are many other classics that I read and loved.
Same with me. I’ve read Wuthering Heights which is by far my favorite classic, and I’ve read just about all of Jane Austen’s books which are great. The Great Gatsby just wasn’t for me.
I couldn’t get into those. I did try. Farenheit 451 I was forced to read in high school. Love it then. Picked them back up as an adult and still loved it.
@Jo Oh I also love Fahrenheit 451! My teacher wanted us to read it out loud and nobody wanted to except for me so I ended up reading the whole book to the class ?.
I’ve heard that’s a really good book. A couple of my friends had recommended that to me awhile back I just haven’t gotten to it yet. But it’s definitely on my TBR. ?
I didn’t like the Great Gatsby at first and now I feel like I have to reread it. It was my ex’s favorite book and we talked about it, and he made me realize so many things that I’d missed. I feel like it’s a book that you can love or hate depending on what you’re going through in your life tbh.
I really liked GG. Having the narrator be an outsider and experiencing all of the wealth (and drama that goes with it) for the first time. It’s not a book you read to “just get through it.” It’s meant to be unfolded for the true meanings.
Yes, it is worth reading. A study of character, not fully revealed, set in differing slices of a particular social class, and in contrast to others. I’ve read it several times, and have seen at least one decent movie production. Very moody and atmospheric.
I love the Great Gatsby. I read it yearly. We even had a Great Gatsby party. The language is lush, lyrical and intoxicating. Also, lots of visual metaphors in the story(if you like that type of thing and i do…LOL) Enjoy if you decide to read it. I love reading it with kids(they are older kids) and it is a good book to share as a family discussion.
@Fabiola it was. we celebrated my daughter’s 15th birthday and everyone dressed like they would in Gatsby. everyone read the book and we had a trivia contest and everyone looked just beautiful. it was so fun.
@Hannah what an amazing idea!!! She must have loved her party! It doesn’t take that much to dress up… Some feathers here and there… Paillettes and low -waist dresses and there you go! Maybe a bit more difficult for the male guests?
I finally read it this year. I’ve seen two different movie versions and really liked both of them. The most recent one matched the book the closest. The book was excellent. Don’t know why I waited so long to read it. It’s much better than the movies.
I absolutely LOVED it. I read it in school. Later, my little brother had to read it for school as well. After he finished, he told me that I was crazy for liking if and that he absolutely hated it. Lol. So, it depends on you. I’ve seen a lot of both sides on this book.
I hated it and had trouble finishing it. It was assigned to my daughter when she was in high school. She and the kids in her class loved it, but I didn’t like it at all.

That’s kind of funny. But I think that book is what spurred my love for dystopian fiction.
I read it this year for the first time. I wasn’t impressed ?♀️ I can see the appeal but it just wasn’t for me.
okay thanks! 🙂 what about Eleanor & Park? is it good?
I’ve heard that’s a really good book. A couple of my friends had recommended that to me awhile back I just haven’t gotten to it yet. But it’s definitely on my TBR. ?
I loved Eleanor and Park!
It’s good. 🙂

It’s amazing!! You really need to know all the symbolisms etc tho to truly appreciate it I think ??

I’ve read it at least 10 times, listened several times and watched the movie. I always learn something new
It’s worth your time. If no other reason than it being a classic piece of 20th century lit
I didn’t like it when I had to read it in high school.
I don’t love it, but think everyone should read it. Does that make sense?
I loved Gatsby. But people get different things out of it. For me it’s a tragedy.
It’s a GORGEOUSLY written tragedy. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a brilliant storyteller. I really hate the story, but everybody should read it. 😉

Didn’t do much for me.
thanks guys! I ended up ordering Eleanor & Park instead. I’ll probably end up buying it later in the futur anyway lol

One of my favorite books.

This book is a well-written and wonderful book when you read it knowing about the time in American history. In that context it is good.
I loved it
Loved it
I’d say get it from the library.
I hated it when I read it in high school, and loved it when I read it in college.
It’s a very “Rich People Problems” type of novel, but the writing is beautiful.
Yes it is. It gives a good flavor of the era, among other things
It was ok. I basically finished it just to say I’d read it.
Me too…it was just OK for me.
