I thought it was cool and weird how the author chose to let chance determine so many of the events. If I remember it, and it is 20+ years since I held that book in my hands, I liked the lack of a clear “point” or “moral”. That made it more real. But I had forgotten all about it untill this second and I will not reread it. In other words it did not stay with me in any way. I did enjoy the writting though.
Hardy is one of my all time favourite authors. Far from the madding crowd and The Woodlanders are good if you’re starting to read classics. Typical Hardy, love, love lost, death. His writing style and descriptive writing are second to none. Read the book, you’ll enjoy it.
It is a very good back, the best of Hardy, though it could be said that Tess has a greater claim for greatness. Hardy’s books are long and I think, written for a period when reading was a goal in itself.

Thank you for such details

@Vijayan His writings were published as books later on, originally published as serials in newspapers and magazines.
I’m gonna start reading it this month ??
I’m a big fan of Victorian fiction, but I’ve just always liked Hardy better as a poet than as a novelist.
Will give his poetry a try too
I loved it–and all of Hardy’s novels.
I loved that book. If you like it I think that Tess of the D’Ubervilles is the best book I’ve read by him.
Did Tess for my literature studies ?
I’m just happy to live far from them.
Loved it!
Everything Hardy wrote is worth reading, even his poetry.
