Some of the best stories ever written, but usually with the worst endings. Prepare to slog through 800 pages for a massive anticlimax on many of his books.
The way the Crimson King ended…. supposedly the biggest villain in the universe… was just ridiculous. Although King lost me when he wrote himself into the plot.
I just cannot get into any books he’s written and I have zero clue as to why. I’ve tried and tried annnnd tried because so many people love them and the premise of some of the books are things that usually interest me in novels.
Genius, he’s so prolific & generally hits more than he misses. He’s also remained pretty consistent – some of his recent work has been among as good as his early classics.
I’m not a huge fan. I think a majority of his books could be shorter. He goes on and on about not much and he struggles to write good endings. Most of the books I’ve read by him were three star reads. They weren’t awful but I didn’t get the hype. That being said I still have a number of his books I want to get too.
That series is one of the books I want to read. I’ve heard mixed things. Some people really liked the first book and hated the rest and others hated the first but loved the rest. I’ll still explore stephan King books. I really want to read Salems lot, pet cemetery and Christine.
I seen lots of his book to movie and enjoyed them, but the one book of his I read. …well freaked me out! It was the stand and I swore to myself that I would never read another one of his books. Lol but I will watch the movies.
Stacy Mcgrew The only movies I liked were The Shawshank Redemption — a favorite! And The Stand was okay (Wasn’t that a mini-series on TV rather than a film though?)
I’ve only read The Shining but I was impressed! I couldn’t believe that in my 26 years I’ve never read a Stephen King, I’m going to read Pet Cemetery next
Can’t get on with his books. I loved misery but left a few others unfinished even after 75% read cos didn’t care what happened! Namely dreamcatcher and the shining. Too wary of picking another one of his up although I have a good few
I’ve been a fan for decades(“The Shining” was my first Love, but I readily admit that he doesn’t knock it out of the park every time he steps up Tati the plate. I appreciate his willingness to plaster with form and style.
Stephen King is INCREDIBLY, FANTASTICALLY, RIDICULOUSLY, MONUMENTALLY.awesome.. the most incredible writer. Every sentence is much more than mere words, it connects with you..
Just finished his newest book. Too much of his political opinions…done reading any more Stephen King…just wanted a good book. Too many other great authors who don’t try and push their liberal garbage throughout a whole book!
I like him
He’s a brilliant author. Some of his books are a bit hit and miss, though.
What did you think of The Dark Tower series and how it ended ?
I’ve yet to read the series, though I have heard good things about it. Rose Madder is a pile of rubbish, though.
adam, I didn’t mind the main ending (you know what I mean) but the way that the main bad guys met their end was nothing short of pathetic
@Lee People who like the ending say that ka is a wheel but still, all those books/pages for THAT ending ???
Some of the best stories ever written, but usually with the worst endings. Prepare to slog through 800 pages for a massive anticlimax on many of his books.
I feel that way about The Dark Tower series.
Excellent series. Awful ending.
The way the Crimson King ended…. supposedly the biggest villain in the universe… was just ridiculous. Although King lost me when he wrote himself into the plot.
@Lee Yep. I felt that way about both parts too.
Still enjoyed the series though.
I think Under the Dome was another major disappointment….
@Lee Did you like The Talisman or Black House ?
Not read either of those. I have them but never got around to reading either
Love him!!!
He was great when he started but it’s hit or miss now
@Estherjane try Joyland for a good more recent book of his
I just cannot get into any books he’s written and I have zero clue as to why. I’ve tried and tried annnnd tried because so many people love them and the premise of some of the books are things that usually interest me in novels.

Have you read The Dark Tower series ?
If not, I recommend it.
I thought the ending was anticlimactic but some King fans liked it.

Love him!
The man is brilliant
He needs therapy. ?

I have been enjoying his books for over 30 years. I’ve read him more than any other author.
I seen lots of his book to movie and enjoyed them, but the one book of his I read. …well freaked me out!

He’s my favorite.
Love the books (especially the early ones) – hate the movies.

Good writer. Love the short stories. 🙂
@Vince Shawshank Redemption is my favorite short story.
😀
I like most of his books, The Stand being my favorite. But couldn’t read Pet Sematary! I love cats and don’t want to have nightmares about them!
@Suzanne The Stand was my favorite as well. ☮️?

A great American writer.
One of the great in a very different way.
My favorite author!??
Do not like his books
HIS BOOKS ARE TOO FAR OUT THERE FOR ME. I HAVE READ A FEW A LONG TIME AGO. “KUJO” WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY ONE I CAN SAY I LIKED
Love them. It took me a while to become a fan but he is one of my favorites now
KATETT OF 19!!! *getting a grip and stops jumping around* He is ok! 😀
I’ve only read The Shining but I was impressed! I couldn’t believe that in my 26 years I’ve never read a Stephen King, I’m going to read Pet Cemetery next
The only book I like is ”The Long Walk”
I like Dean R Koonz much more !!
@Magdalena I liked that book, but the ending was a bit meh
@Lee Yeah, you would like to know.. what happened then… sort of !!
Can’t get on with his books. I loved misery but left a few others unfinished even after 75% read cos didn’t care what happened! Namely dreamcatcher and the shining. Too wary of picking another one of his up although I have a good few
Love Stephen King books… Read them all….
Great books!!
Good writer.
do not like enough to make it a script for film
Not for me as S K but I do like his Richard Bachman books.
I’ve been a fan for decades(“The Shining” was my first Love, but I readily admit that he doesn’t knock it out of the park every time he steps up Tati the plate. I appreciate his willingness to plaster with form and style.

Nice… and brooding darkness…
Awesome writer!
Earlier books were excellent
Good but his books are so long.
I think he is a writer.
best horror writer ever
I love his writings.
It’s hard to go wrong with Stephen King.
Best writer ever, in any genre.
Quality writer though has yet to really master writing an ending.
Been a ‘constant reader’ of his for 31 years. Love his books !
Love him!
Just finished his newest book. Too much of his political opinions…done reading any more Stephen King…just wanted a good book. Too many other great authors who don’t try and push their liberal garbage throughout a whole book!
Tricia Gibas Hiatt Just as there are so many authors that don’t try to push misogynistic and hate filled rhetoric under the guise of patriotism.
Love him!
Like some of his stories. Not my favorite author.
He’s married to one of the greatest women on the planet.
BTW- Thanks Mrs. King for letting Steve come out and play with us for all these years.
I’ve loved his books for 30+ years now.
I couldn’t get into his books
