To my knowledge this one isn’t part of a series, it’s a stand alone novel by King. If it has links to other books of his that I haven’t read, I didn’t notice.
I haven’t read The Outsider but there’s a character who’s also a major character in the Mr Mercedes/Finders Keepers trilogy. I don’t know if there’d be spoilers for the trilogy or not.
@Nancy I really liked the book. It starts out one type of story, kinda quirky and light, and shifts into a much deeper, and for me powerful, read. Give it some time. There is a big, big reason she is the way she is. Also the underlining message is be nice to others, you do not know their struggles (and kind interactions can change the world, one relationship at a time).
Not sure of the release date, but The Punishment She Deserves, by Elizabeth George, and To Die But Once, by Jacqueline Winspear, are my favorite, most recent, releases.
I’m reading through Chuck Palahniuk’s books…he’s my new favorite author, and I’m planning on reading all of his books before summer is over. I’ve read 7 of them so far.
I love Chuck Palahnuik! I’ve read so many of his books. I do find him to be hit or miss though. There were a couple I just couldn’t get through. Not because they were disturbing, but because I didn’t enjoy them. Both Pygmy and Snuff were big misses for me.
Just finished “The Bar Harbor Retirement Home for Famous Writers (And Their Muses)” by Terri-Lynne DeFino and it was pretty fine … 🙂 … also read “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje and really enjoyed that, too.
The Great Alone, Children of blood and bone, sandpaper shore by Debbie Mason, the family gathering by Robin Carr, welcome to moonlight harbor by Sheila Roberts, love and Ruin by Paula McLean, When we found home by Susan Mallery to name some more.
MY DEAR HAMILTON: A NOVEL OF ELIZA SCHUYLER HAMILTON by Laura Kamoie & Stephanie Dray; SAINTS FOR ALL SEASONS by J. Courtney Sullivan (I waited for 2018 paperback publication).
I’m a mystery girl, so Brian Freeman had 2 AWESOME ones come out this year and I’m now reading Steve Hamilton’s newest and am in absolute HEAVEN. These two guys are my top 2 in living American mystery writers. It seems like my reviews NEVER go below 4 stars I love them that much.
There are so many good books on the list, plus I got caught up in the MaddAddam Trilogy by Margaret Atwood. I just can’t stop reading in order to think about new releases.
Also want to pick up “Main Street” by Sinclair Lewis at some point.
Have Mainstreet but haven’t read it yet. Reading 3 books at the same time currently. When I finish them I think Mainstreet will be next up Have always heard its a good book.
Then I would say “Once Upon a Farm” by Rory Feek. It is the follow-up to “This Life I Love” from 2017. The honesty and the compelling storytelling have drawn me into both books. The second book takes up the story of survival through faith, hope and courage in spite of the devastating loss of the writer’s wife two years after the birth of their daughter. Both books left me feeling hopeful and inspired to carry on in my own challenges.
Girls….it was so good!!!! From the description I thought it would be ok…..It stole my heart and I did not want it to end!!! I have all the authors books on my tbr list now?
The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman The Call of the Wild by Jack London Jurassic Park by Michael Crighton To The Bright Edge Of The World by Eowyn Ivey The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Wow so many for The Great Alone. I am a Kristin Hannah fan but I wouldn’t put that at my top. Probably have to say The Alice Network. Also Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner
I am reading EROTIC STORIES FOR PUNJABI WOMEN now. Enjoying it. I knew very little about Sikh culture/faith before reading this, so the setting within a Sikh diaspora in London was a draw; and the title was obviously an eye-catcher. The surprise of what the Sikh widows preferred to write (rather than just to learn English) makes for a wildly different kind of story than I expected, including some humor as well as tensions re exposure of long held secrets and fears. What truly keeps me reading (am on p147 of 294pp) is the mystery aspect (potential “moral police” actions and what will happen if and when the true nature of the group’s “learning to write” reaches the woman who hired hired its young teacher). I like reading stories related to other cultures, especially where women’s issues are being addressed. This one seems pretty unique!
I’m behind in most of the books I read by a few years since I wait till they are on sale. I have a few on hold in the library one is the Great Alone I think I’m number 160 something though ? I think sometimes it’s good to wait a year or so to find out which ones are worth reading.
If you’re a big fan of hers, you might like it, but I didn’t. I only really liked the Nightingale by her, & The Great Alone was not as well written. I didn’t like the domestic violence in it.
Never read her, wasn’t aware of the DV could be triggering for me.. I’m a survivor but I think it’s important for people to learn about it, awareness to lift the stigma of it
Firefly Lane was my fav Kristin Hannah book until The Nightingale. Try Firefly Lane. Anyone I ever recommended that to loved it. That was also the only book, years later, she wrote a sequel to called Fly Away
On Mystic Lake was the book where I discovered Kristin Hannah. Back in the day, browsing bookstores on a rainy Saturday was my favorite thing to do and discovered it. Now I just do it online.
Before The Nightingale, Firefly Lane was my fave. For some reason I was never able to get into Winter Garden years ago when it came out. I’m going to have to try again!
I enjoyed Force of Nature by Jane Harper. She is a new author to watch! Her first book, which came out in 2017 was one of my favorite books of last year, The Dry.
Top 3 out of the 42 I’ve finished so far this year. All 3 published in 2018. The Line Becomes a River by Cantú, The Cabin at the End of the World by Tremblay, There There by Tommy Orange

I’ll Be Gone In The Dark was fantastic!
The Outsider by Stephen King, The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian, and How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan
I want to read The Outsider…do I need to read the previous books in the series?
To my knowledge this one isn’t part of a series, it’s a stand alone novel by King. If it has links to other books of his that I haven’t read, I didn’t notice.
@Donna my finger slipped and hit that emoji sorry
I haven’t read The Outsider but there’s a character who’s also a major character in the Mr Mercedes/Finders Keepers trilogy. I don’t know if there’d be spoilers for the trilogy or not.
Calypso by David Sedaris
Beneath a Scarlet Sky
As bright as heaven by Susan Meissner, the broken girls by Simone St.James, now that you mention it, by Kristan Higgins to name a few

Loved I WAS ANASTASIA!
The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck, Love & Ruin by Paula McLain, The Witch Elm by Tana French, & The Rain Watcher by Tatiana de Rosnay.
Dying to read The Witch Elm!
It’s really good, reminds me of the Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware, but even better.
Eleanor Oliphant is just fine, the home for unwanted girls, the pearl sister, the girl in the tower.
OK so I’m reading Eleanor Oliphant right now and I’m having a hard time getting into it. Does it get better as you read further?
@Sandra I think so. I really liked it
@Sandra I’m
having a hard time with it, too. Only on page 25 so far it’s just very slow so far and pointless. I hope it gets better!
@Yvette , thanks, I’m still sticking with it, thanks for your encouragement!
@Yvette Absolutely agree with you! Loved this debut book. I’ll be reading Gail’s next book for sure!

It’s interesting that so many people love The Great Alone because I didn’t like it at all. I guess it’s either a you love it or hate it kind of book.
Did you like her other books? I just don’t get the hype over Hannah.??♀️
Christy Ellison Davis I like them okay, but I don’t think she’s the greatest writer. Other than The Nightingale, I don’t get the appeal either.
@Kristen could not agree more!
I agree as well!
Whew! I thought I was the only one. It seemed like a YA book to me.
@Beth Except most YA books are better written. 🙂
Not sure of the release date, but The Punishment She Deserves, by Elizabeth George, and To Die But Once, by Jacqueline Winspear, are my favorite, most recent, releases.

If you’re a big fan of hers, you might like it, but I didn’t. I only really liked the Nightingale by her, & The Great Alone was not as well written. I didn’t like the domestic violence in it.
Kristen…I agree with you…I don’t think the Great Alone was very well written either. I almost stopped reading it for that reason.
Never read her, wasn’t aware of the DV could be triggering for me.. I’m a survivor but I think it’s important for people to learn about it, awareness to lift the stigma of it
I agree with awareness, but this is beyond that. There’s a scene with the daughter and killing a rabbit that is just brutal to read.
Abusers use animals as a means of control at times.. not for sure if I should read it.. I’ve lived thru enough abuse.. thank you for informing me
@Misty It was more of a hunting thing, but without telling you the scene, it was pretty graphic and stomach turning.
Misty Owens I thought the book was great but I believe it would be very triggering.
I think the nightingale was brilliant
And agree about the Great Alone, pushed the story

I enjoyed Force of Nature by Jane Harper. She is a new author to watch! Her first book, which came out in 2017 was one of my favorite books of last year, The Dry.
I read The Dry. Enjoyed it. I’ll check out this new book of hers.
The President is Missing was interesting.
The Last Time I Lied
I can’t wait to read this one
I’m not to big on thrillers (because I get to scared) but I loved this one!
The Self-Driven Child. Great!
Ghostwriter

The Hearts Invisible Furies
Firefly Cove.. Davis Bunn

That’s a book title, or a newspaper headline?
It’s a book we’ve all written in our heads this week.
Educated
I’ll second that.
@Nora I think it is Educated. Do you mean this book?
@Jodi you’re right…I got thrown off by another post (and I’m tired. ??♀️) thanks. Great book, either way!
@Nora thanks for the recommendation. This one is on my list!
A really good book. Totally amazing what that gal went thru.
@Jodi if you like audiobooks, the author reads this one, which made it so much more powerful.
@Chris hard to believe those kids lived through it…
@Nora I love audiobooks. I will definitely check it out
@Nora thank you!
I will 5th or 6th it… I lost count but that is exactly the book I was about to post
The Great Alone
That one is on my list.
Masterpiece by Francine Rivers, Dead Drift by Dani Pettrey, Oath of Honor by Lynette Eason, If I Live by Terri Blackburn, and Fawkes by Nadine Brandes
Box of Butterflies ?
Top 3 out of the 42 I’ve finished so far this year. All 3 published in 2018. The Line Becomes a River by Cantú, The Cabin at the End of the World by Tremblay, There There by Tommy Orange
Struggling through There, There. Too depressing. What did you like about it?
I am reading There There now.
The president is missing
I’ve been wondering about this one!
This might be my next read…I heard it was good but haven’t found it at the library yet lol
Was it really that good?
I’m going to have to pick it up. I like how Bill Clinton writes, but I’ve never read anything by James Patterson before.
