The other day when we went to the used bookstore, but sometimes sells new books, I opened this book up and I kept smelling something wonderful, couldn’t figure it out, so I just lifted the book to my nose and I smelled the book over and over again. My roommate probably thought I was crazy.
@Kelly, I can buy so many more used ones than I can buy new ones. Plus, I feel like I am giving the used ones a second chance to make someone happy. Me!
I love used books, books with a history that need a new home. I also love “living in” my new books until they’re worn and well-loved. I carry them around with me everywhere. I let them jostle in my bag and stuff them in my coat pocket. I read late at night until I fall asleep with my face buried in them, and I eat my snacks over them. I read in the tub and let the steam ripple the pages a bit. I dog-ear my favorite pages and underline my favorite parts. I don’t like when books are too “clean”. You know my most loved books by how worn they are. Alternatively, I dated a guy who would have a conniption god-forbid you opened the book wide enough to break in the spine. All of his books had to be so pristine that they looked like they were never touched. If I wanted to read a book in his library, I’d have to get my own copy because he didn’t trust me ?
@Nick one Christmas after my son had given out presents to friends at school, one of his friends came to him and told him he didn’t have money to buy presents but instead wanted him to have one of his favourite books. I think getting that pre-loved book meant far more than any of the other presents he received from friends.
I prefer older books it’s something about the smell that draws me in but they must be in good condition a must is no downturned corners as this will cause nightmares ?
I just love going in the bookstores browsing the isles and buying a few brand new books. But i also love using thriftbooks and ordering used books soooo cheap i get so much more and its like a suprise book gift in my mailbox every little bit lol
I know I read in there, so it’s only plausible that others do it as well. I still rent many books from my library, but I always have that thought in the back of my mind. Small price to pay for the knowledge though!?
New. Not enough people wash their hands after using the toilet, most used books are bashed up or spines broken or odd stains or smells… Blegh. At least I know my books have my germs on them.
New. I do like the smell of used or older books, but with new I know all the aspects of wear, usage and condition. I also get to make it my own, meaning all the markings in the books are the ones I made.
@Val our local bookstore is called Bookstacks…they have a section called restocks that are discounted used books in new like condition…my favorite section ❤️
@Denise I buy a lot of my books from a thrift shop called BFM (Bible’s for missions) a non profit charity organization. You can get almost new bestsellers for as little as 25 cents (including hard covers). They have so many donated books of the same title and author that they need to clear them as fast as possible. I try not to go there too often because it’s dangerous. ?????
I found a copy of Pink Chimneys (historical fiction) for $1.50 I hadn’t been able to find it for less than $100 used so what does it matter if it’s in good condition
I love the “idea” of a used book.In the past, I would try to imagine all the people who had read them before me, particularly if the book came from a collection of someone I knew. But I, too, have bad allergies and reading a book that hasn’t been kept in the best of conditions sets me off. However, Powell’s Bookstore in downtown Portland is one of my favorite places to roam and I’ve been know to spend a lot of money there. Go figure!
I love both for different reasons. It feels nice to have a new pretty book, but I also love knowing that a book was loved before I got it!
I love both! I LOVE new book smell, but I also love the feeling of a nice, worn book. 🙂
I love a good used book!
I love vintage books, but prefer reading new books as opposed to used. Germaphobe here.
used! always used for me!!
I don’t want to choose, I LOVE both ❤️?
My preference is new. I have purchased used as well though
It depends on the edition ? Most of the time I prefer used because the book has a history
Doesn’t matter, I’d take a used book any day
Usually new, but I’m fine with used in good condition. I prefer to be the one to beat up my books. ?
Mainly buy used… Read it and give it back to second hand book room
New.
New always new. Something about the smell of freshly printed pages ?

@Julie you’re not! New books smell amazing.
Whatever is cheaper. ?
Both ❤️
both
I prefer…. a great story ?
New
I love used books if they are in good or decent condition.
Same
@Kelly, I can buy so many more used ones than I can buy new ones. Plus, I feel like I am giving the used ones a second chance to make someone happy. Me!
@Debbie I will buy new if I can but if they are in great shape then I buy used. I collect some authors so it mind a depends.
Yes, me too.
Both
I prefer books. Lol
Though I always look for the least damaged used book…
New
Though, if I’m being honest, cracking open a book for the first time is extremely satisfying.
New
…but older books smell better. ?

One of my childhood favorite movies!
Right? I just introduced it to my kids last year and they love it. It’s a great movie.
I prefer new and the smell of a new cook, but I love getting a good deal on used and finding surprises inside
Yes
Great movie!
“To Shibalba? TO SHIBALBA!!” (Yeah, I totally just guessed on the spelling ?)
I love a new book just because it’s pristine but used are cheaper and serve the same purpose!
New, because its scent..but I smell old books too?
Both
Both but I have to say there’s something about getting a secondhand book that makes it special. You can see that it’s been on a journey to get to you.
@Nick one Christmas after my son had given out presents to friends at school, one of his friends came to him and told him he didn’t have money to buy presents but instead wanted him to have one of his favourite books. @April That is so sweet!
If I can read it, it’s good with me. New or used. Paper or eBook. If the contents are enjoyable, I’m all about it.
I prefer older books it’s something about the smell that draws me in but they must be in good condition a must is no downturned corners as this will cause nightmares ?
New for me, I love the smell and feel of a new book. It’s like when your the first person to walk out on fresh snow.
I only buy used books and prefer only paperback. I love books that have stories before I own them.
New
New
I like both
Don’t care
Used costs less but i like new
Love new but try to buy used to give the book another “life”. After we’ve read them, we pass it on or donate it and hope it gets more chances again.
I just love going in the bookstores browsing the isles and buying a few brand new books. But i also love using thriftbooks and ordering used books soooo cheap i get so much more and its like a suprise book gift in my mailbox every little bit lol
I love it too when those green packages come in !
New, cause then I’m 99.99% sure no one else took it in the bathroom with them…?
Lol one of my girls and i had this same discussion just the other day
I know I read in there, so it’s only plausible that others do it as well. I still rent many books from my library, but I always have that thought in the back of my mind. Small price to pay for the knowledge though!?
I dont mind as long as the book looks clean and in good condition
If I’m going to keep the book, then usually prefer new…if I’m just reading it & then donating or reselling it, a good condition used book is fine too…
New. Not enough people wash their hands after using the toilet, most used books are bashed up or spines broken or odd stains or smells… Blegh. At least I know my books have my germs on them.
Being practical, I try to get the most books for my money. It’s hard to pass up 25¢ PBs and 50¢ hardcovers at library book sales.
Brand new
New, I donate my books to the state library prison system, the local high school, and the county jail
That’s like asking if I like chocolate bars or chocolate truffles.
Used.
I look for books that look well loved because there is usually a good story inside 🙂
Used
New books, so I can smell the pages! ?
Nothing beats the smell of a new book, but my wallet prefers used.
Used because I love a bargain.
New. I do like the smell of used or older books, but with new I know all the aspects of wear, usage and condition. I also get to make it my own, meaning all the markings in the books are the ones I made.
Used. Same feeling as christmas.
Oops. Thought that was used or new bookstore. Still probably used though.
Used far outnumber the new
Used
First and foremost: a good book!
New reading books old text books bc they highlight and leave notes
Not particular
Whatever I can get my grubby little paws on
New with it’s crisp, clean pages.
I rarely buy new books, too expensive. I buy them all at thrift stores. You get more for your money. ?
@Val our local bookstore is called Bookstacks…they have a section called restocks that are discounted used books in new like condition…my favorite section ❤️

@Val I understand!! My TBR pile is huge and I add to it all the time lol
@Denise I’m not bragging, but, I bet mine’s bigger than yours. ???
@Val that’s awesome ❤️
I can’t afford to buy new books.
Can be used but I prefer those in Very Good condition or better as I share them in my Little Free Library.
I found a copy of Pink Chimneys (historical fiction) for $1.50 I hadn’t been able to find it for less than $100 used so what does it matter if it’s in good condition
New but just because I have bad allergies and asthma

New hardcovers
New.
Used in perfect loved condition. Like an old friend.
Used.

I prefer an iPad. My hands get tired of holding a book up
Used book in good condition and kindle edition.
Used for me.. I like knowing that someone before me has got enjoyment from it!
