It’s very….eclectic. This gentleman takes a walk one day and ends up in an odd situation that turns out to be a significant point in history. Kind of like Forrest Gump, but international.
Wideacre by Philippa Gregory. I think it’s one of her best. The main character is dark and ruthless to get what she wants. And what she wants is to be mistress of her family home. But she is the daughter and her brother is to inherit the beloved estate. Let’s just say she stops at nothing to get what she wants.
Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnation books. Set during and just after the French Revolution. They move back and forth from present day to the historical period.
Possession, by A S Byatt
Outlander!
Sandra Dallas writes great historical fiction about women and their relationships. Something different….although not fully romances.
Cold Mountain
The Golem and the Jinni
Not quite a historical romance, but historical fiction (with some romance in it): The First Blast of the Trumpet by Marie MacPherson …?
The Secret Wife by Gill Paul is a griping love story spanning from the Russian revolution to the modern day. It is well written and a lovely story
Trinity, Leon Uris
The Sidewalk Artist

I second The Bronze Horseman and nominate The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
By the way, each of these is the first book in a series. I gave each of them 5 Stars, but I did not really care for the sequels.
In the Land of the Long White Cloud
Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnation books. Set during and just after the French Revolution. They move back and forth from present day to the historical period.
I’ve read more historical romances that I care to admit. If you tell me who some of your favorite authors are I can probably recommend something.
