I need sci-fi/urban fantasy recommendations. Like Mercy Thompson, Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews
I’m in a funk. I need sci-fi/urban fantasy recommendations. My favorites have been the Mercy Thompson series, Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer, Kim Harrison, the Fever books, Ilona Andrews… Thanks for the help!
The Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper, Skinwalker series by Faith Hunter, Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine… Have you read any of those?
I’ve read most of what Charlaine Harris has written. I wasn’t big on the skinwalker series. But the others are new, thank you!
You miight like the Soulwood books by Faith Hunter better than the skinwalker series. The Charley Davidson books by Darynda Jones might be worth checking out…
Nothing else really lives up to Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, and Rachel Morgan, though. 🙂
Go for Stephen King. Specially his last book its very sci-fi “Sleeping Beauties”
I can’t do horror too much. I tried Joe Hills, Horns and gave up. Just too creepy. Is it like that?
No not at all. Another great book of his is the Talisman/Blackhouse. Joe seems more of a gore person than his dad
@Henry good to know!
No problem. And Justin Croonin The Passageway its another scifi novel you might like. You can always check goodreads. They have a category just for scifi
@Henry I read The Passage, it’s a good trilogy
Daniel José Older’s Bone Street Rumba series. Also, his Shadowshaper series!
John Courtenay Greenwood (sp?) could well be the author you’re looking for; fits right into that urban sci-fi bracket.
The Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. I think the first book is called Spider Bite.
Rachel Vincent has a paranormal series that starts with the book Stray. And have you read any books by Kelley Armstrong?
I read the first Women of the Others/Underworld by Armstrong. How are the others?
I like them a ton! Elena is a badass lead.
Kelley Armstrong also has a series about a female assassin and a series about a special town in the Yukon. I read some of the books in her Others series- the ones pertaining to the werewolves are the best.
I’m not sure if it totally fits the bill, but I like the ones you mentioned and love The Others series by Anne Bishop.
I just finished this series. i enjoyed them!
Have you read the Accidental Series by Dakota Cassidy?
Sci-fi: Stephen King’s 11/22/63. Time travel- its great!
CE Murphy’s Urban Shaman series, The Dresden Files
Have you read all of the anthologies- Games Creatures Play, Death’s Excellent Vacation, etc.? I frequently read an anthology and then look at books by those authors I hadn’t read yet. Also the anthologies Urban Allies, Urban Enemies, Shadowed Souls, Powers of Detection. Try Kate Locke’s trilogy with vampires and Gail Carriger’s series that begins with Soulless
Oh and The Iron Druid series, Seanan McGuire’s Incryptid series, Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty series, Victoria Laurie’s Psychic Eye series is funny
Anthologies is a good idea!
The Greywalker series by Kat Richardson.
I second Faith Hunter, Jennifer Estep, Benedict Jacka, Seanan McQuire October Daye Series, I second someone’s suggestion Anne Bishop, D. B. Reynolds
The chronicles of elantra series by Michelle Sagara. It has a bit more of a young adult feel to it but…
Fun paranormal steampunk series ‘The Parasol Protectorate’ by Gail Cartiger. First book title is ‘Soulless’.
I’ve read this one. It’s good! Thanks!
I just finished The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh. They were really surprisingly good. After reading Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega series these really were a great read for December.
Nalini Singh is a pretty fantastic Urban Fantasy author. I enjoyed her so much I just ordered seven books from her Psy/Changling series!!
The Guild Hunter Series is one of my favorites! I cannot wait for Archangels Prophecy later this year!
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Seconded. The first thought that came to mind. What a series! @Maggie, you’re bound to get a lot out of this, there’s a good number in the series already and a great deal to get your teeth into.
Becca Andre
Midnight Riot and the rest of the series by Ben Aaronovitch
Read it. Loved them
Wool, Shift and Dust by Hugh Howey
I read Wool…Shift is driving me crazy. Are they going to die?! I can’t take it.
shift was my least favorite. But it ties in nicely with Dust. Dust is quite good.
Keep going. The fate of the characters in shift are revealed in Dust.
Try S. M. Stirling for post apocalyptical fantasy.
If you enjoy graphic novels too, then I highly recommend Transmetropolitan series by Warren Ellis.
Anything by Kelley Armstrong! She and Kim Harrison are two of my favorite fantasy/sci-fi writers.
Joe Abercrombie
Darynda Jones (most like the ones you listed), Nalini Singh, Jim Butcher, Benedict Jacka, Shayne Silver
I second Jim Butcher.
I second Nalini Singh
Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding, Charming by Elliott James, Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia. I had some others but I believe they were already listed
Have you read Charles DeLint’s Newford books?
Not yet
The Magician Series by Lev Grossman. 3 in the series…could not put them down!
Sooooo good! I second this one.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned but Urban Shaman by CE Murphy or Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig (I just started reading this series)
How could I have forgotten to mention the Urban Shaman series? That’s a good one.
Seconding a lot of these, plus Perdido St Station by China Miéville
Good shout on the Mieville. Not yet got to Perdido Street Station, it’s waiting on my shelf. But I love everything he’s done, he has a fantastic imagination. Blown away by the conceit and the realisation of the first I read, City and the City, and Kraken was indeed crackin’.
I really recommend Elizabeth Hunter’s Elemental Mysteries series and her follow up series with related characters. They are some of my favorite books in this genre. I find them really intelligent and well thought out. So many of the series in this genre seem kind of sophomoric to me.
I just finished reading Gio and B;s story and it was great! I plan on reading the next set soon!
The Mageri series by Dannika Dark are good if you haven’t read them yet
Charles de Lint. He is the best!
Lunar Chronicles for a sci-fi/dystopian/fairytale series. It’s SO good!
