Broken Skin by Stuart MacBride has an Aberdeen player (fictional player) as a suspect and I think one of the John Harvey books references football (the Charlie Resnick character is a Notts County fan). Failing that, any books on Rangers is criminal ?
Try Dangerous Score by Michael Bearcroft. The lead character is a professional footballer and there are several parts which show the behind the scenes action in a football club. The author was Chairman of Corby FC in the past so knows his stuff.
The book is set in 1939 written around that time arsenal team of 1939 are unstoppable but are facing the trojans an amateur team on a winning streak. During the second half a player drops dead features the actual 1939 arsenal squad. In the British Library classic crime. Hope this helps.
@Graham’s Matching The Evidence has a backdrop of policing a football match. The rest of the series is pretty darn good too, though not so much football!
Thanks so much for all the brilliant responses. Enough there to keep me going until Accrington Stanley win the European Champions Cup. Real eye-opener: I never guessed there would be so many. The discovery of two heads in the boardroom of Glasgow Rangers Ibrox stadium caught my attention so may start there. Spoilt for choice.
Dead if you Don’t by Peter James is partially set at the AmEx (Brighton)

One of the last Quentin jardine Bob skinner books revolved around a football player(s) can’t remember the name tho
Phillip Kerr’s series of books set around a football club

@Geoff just downloaded this tyvm 4 link x
Looks good. Thanks.
Penalties by Stephen Leather is good.
Putting the Book In by Dan Kavanagh aka Julian Barnes. A bit dated but very funny and well-observed on lower league football.

I saw one in Oxfam the other day by Neil White called Fallen Idols which looked quite good.

Scott Manson series by Phil Kerr. Absolutely brilliant books. I think the first is called ‘false nine’
Red is the Colour – Mark Fowler. An excellent read
