I have a whole shelf and a half of books that I either read and didn’t care for OR couldn’t even finish and I tell myself Ill take them to half price books for cash or donate them or something but sadly I never can make myself walk out the door with them.
Mostly, I’m concerned that they won’t go to good homes. That said, twice a month I run the used book sale, at the library (where I am my best customer). Many of the books I buy I donate when I’ve read them … win/win, they’re sold a second time. All of our books are donations, or books culled by the library; the proceeds fund projects and events for our children and teens. A couple of months ago, I cleared 20boxes (half-filled) to the bookstore, 15boxes between two libraries, 30boxes to Goodwill, and I have a further 25boxes in storage, for when we have shelf space. I need a McMansion …
I tried donating some of my old books to the local library and they told me that they don’t take donations. I couldn’t beleive it. So I brought them with a few other items to the goodwill and salvation stores. They take them.
The goodwill here charge to much for books 4.00 for something they received free is a bit steep. I give them to libraries , but would rather swap with people who are interested in specific books .
My branch has only TWO quilting books, so they had first pick, but they couldn’t accept them, because they’re not already in the system. That’s because they’re from Japan, France, Australia. So, I put them on the shelf, and local quilters got a great bargain. Of course, LAPL, our lords and masters, have thousands of quilt books, distributed throughout the area, just not in our branch.
I tried donating to a library as well. Was told they loose funding if they get donations. No idea if that is true or not so I donate to the friends of the local library group who sell the books to help support the library programs.
@Mary, that’s where I volunteer, twice a month, running the Friends’ bookshop. Our books, CDs, DVDs, and sometimes records, are all donated, either by well-wishers, who then come in to make a purchase, or the discarded stock from the library. I am, I’m sure, my own best customer. I buy a lot of books, then donate them, for a second sale. We fund the children and teen’s programs, and cover the cost of extras, not in the branch’s budget.
Don’t forget hospitas and nursing homes and rehab facilities, I’m sure they would love them. Also women’s shelters that provide temperary housing, try them.
I donate a lot of my books to my library and many end up on the shelves so that makes me feel good. If something interests a friend, I pass it on to them.
Also, you can send them in care packages for troops, or find a location to donate to soldiers. I used to donate books to the Wounded Warrior Unit when we were at Fort Lewis
After I’ve read mine my Mom reads them and when I get a bag full I take it to my local used book store, and he gives me a store credit, which is awesome as I can leave with books as well, a win win?
I swap back forth to my sister and Mom. I also give some to a co worker’s Mom, who reads them, shares with her friends and then they go to the lending library our cancer care center has in our hospital
I hoard them because I don’t know how to let go. ?
LOL

Have a book swap party. Went to one once. Loads of fun, and got some new reads!
Awesome idea!
We put a little free library on our front lawn, the books in our house come and go all the time…. ?
A lot of people are doing this also in Australia.
Donate to the Library
I give them away to other people that I know love to read
Donate to little free library
Donate to library after me, my mom, and my sister read them.
Don’t forget hospitas and nursing homes and rehab facilities, I’m sure they would love them. Also women’s shelters that provide temperary housing, try them.
??this!!
Donate to Friends of Library which sells them very reasonably and money goes to library.

Check out @Operation – they send books to military families all over the world
Also, you can send them in care packages for troops, or find a location to donate to soldiers. I used to donate books to the Wounded Warrior Unit when we were at Fort Lewis
I offer mine to family or friends first and then either sell to the used book store or donate them (Goodwill, Savers, Community Center, Library).

I have several friends and relatives that swap back and forth with me, but they all eventually end up at the public library or church thrift shop.
I swap back forth to my sister and Mom. I also give some to a co worker’s Mom, who reads them, shares with her friends and then they go to the lending library our cancer care center has in our hospital
I give mine away to friends and coworkers.
I donate. Books should always be circulating.
I keep mine in my library…If i knew someone close to me, i would lend to them
I just joined BookCrossing. Looking forward to seeing someone’s library.
Congratulations, everyone!
