I have seen people who work in bookstores and libraries while they may love books a lot don’t read that much.
A lot of people it’s a job and they need to pay the bills. The ones I know at the bookshop by me they read but it’s a lot more casually then most of us
When reading is not your only hobby, you work full time, and have kids it can happen. I Embrace having a well rounded life where i have time more things. Even if it means not getting enough time for one thing. It’s all in what makes u happy ?
@Dorine to be fair, librarians see and process a lot of books every day. It can be difficult to immediately recall who wrote what or where it is in the collection.
Agreed.. but she did not know what book I was talking about..even if it’s not your genre… shouldn’t they know the bestsellers?? Or am I the exception? Books I’ve read years ago, or have on my shelves.. 90% I know by title & author..
@Dorine bestsellers pertain more to book stores vs. Libraries. Bookstores replenish stock nightly and redo promo tables and hold daily meetings to discuss best sellers. Libraries consider them mostly high check out and only get 1 or 2 copies of a title, usually. Please keep in mind what is popular to one might not be to another. She may be a sci fi reader and not familiar with Kristin Hannah. She might also only work one day a week or be filing in for someone.
Dorine Westerhof also librarians are sometimes given sections. Example: a childrens librarian who is only in charge of the kids section so she might only read kids books to familiarize herself with the books she works with daily.
I’ve worked in a library. It’s easier to just ask the author than think if you’ve heard of the book or author before. Plus while they may have heard of the book they may not actually have heard the author’s name. I know I’ve heard that title but I have NO clue who wrote it. When you hear or read dozens of names a day it’s hard to remember which one goes with which book. Best thing you can do is write the call number down when you look at the catalogue for book availability.
I’m a student worker in a theological library. Everyone on staff loves reading and regularly gives each other suggestions based on our different interests.
I volunteered at our local library all through high school and spent last summer working there, and I absolutely love to read! It’s my love of reading that made me want to volunteer/work at the library!
See I could never work in a library – because I would not be working – they would be searching for me, and I would be in that little corner nook reading a book ?
I worked in a library as did my Mam and sister. I left to become a nurse. As fulfilling as nursing has been, books remain an essential part of my life. And yes, I could always be found catching a read at work in both jobs but don’t tell the bosses !
I think so..
Everyone I have known who works in a library has a deep passion for books, so absolutely.
Oh, I sincerely hope so. What a waste of an opportunity if not … not to mention the joy of being around books all day.
I have a friend that works full time in a library and she is not a reader. I’m dumbfounded over it too. Lol
I have met quite a few library staff who don’t read. Broke my heart!
I’m a public librarian and I read a lot. How else could I recommend books. Although last year I only read 46 books.
Plus I get them first….?
That’s a definite plus.
Yes. They always tell me about books they liked when they check out my books.
My friend is a librarian. She reads all the time!!
I hope so! If not, that makes me ?.
I’m a librarian and love to read ? unfortunately working and being a single mum gets in the way ?

Absolutely
Because I am a reader it was a dream of mine to work at our library! Never have though.
I worked in a library and was so disappointed. It was like being a file clerk and had nothing to do with reading.
I’m a school librarian and my passion is reading!

My grandmother was a librarian and loved reading.
I would think a librarian would like to read ?

My best friend (@Sara) wants to become a librarian. She is a book dragon

I asked for ‘the great alone’ (last week!!!) because according catalog two copies would be in… and she asked me ‘do you know who wrote it’ ?????

My mother was a librarian and books surrounded us at home ?
Of course.
Of course we do. How else can we recommend books.
Yes. When my daughter was looking for a book, the lady working there asked her questions and made suggestions on the type of book she might enjoy.
For sure?
I hope so. I absolutely love my job and am doing exactly what I need to be doing right now, but being a librarian is a future dream of mine.
I volunteer in a library, and yes, we’re all avid readers ??
I would think they do, why would you work in a library if you don’t like books??
Would you work in a nursery if you didn’t like kids? ??♀️ Pretty sure librarians enjoy books and reading
I work in a hospital and don’t like being sick.
Yep. Sadly, not so much during work hours (I’m usually pretty busy doing other stuff) 😀
I was a librarian and I loved to read, but as @Yvonne said sadly not at work!!
I worked in a library as did my Mam and sister. I left to become a nurse. As fulfilling as nursing has been, books remain an essential part of my life. And yes, I could always be found catching a read at work in both jobs but don’t tell the bosses !
I do. And yes! Not at work, we are too busy ??
Yes we do ❤️?
Absolutely. My mum worked in a library for 43 years and books were everywhere !!
In my experience, most of us have been drawn to books all our lives and love to read!
I work in a grocery shop and I love eating, so I should think a librarian will hopefully like reading.
Lol. I worked in a bakery and I live sweets.
Yes
Most of us, although I will say there is one at mine who is rumored not to!
My bestie is a librarian. She reads more than I do
I’ve worked in libraries for 38 years and still do and…. yes i read lots and so do most of the others but surlprisingly enough chief librarian doesn’t
my friend does
I work in a library and adore books – compare it to an alcoholic working in a bar. Not all my colleagues are the same.
Oh, yes! I’m a high school librarian. Unpacking a new shipment of books is like Christmas to me!
Yes! All of the people that I know in my local library love to read! One of the ladies there just retired and joined our book club there!
Absolutely.
I hope so
Yes….
31 years in the main office overseeing 35 school libraries and I could never get enough.
