Sadly, I’ve never read one. I couldn’t make it through Love in the Time of Cholera, but I’ve heard wonderful things about his others, especially One Hundred Years of Solitude. I do really enjoy his short stories though. Maybe you could start with those.
that’s true but even when you know the ending of a story since the first paragraph like in Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada, you still want to read it until the end
Magical realism it’s an adquiered taste. Sadly some English translations seem too complicated. His stories have many characters which can confuse the reader. Maybe jot down who’s who? I would go straight to One hundred years of solitude. In my opinion the best.
One Hundred Years of Solitude is not stream-of-conscious writing. It is a perfectly crafted story that has a definite plot while at the same time delving into the history of humanity and our foolushness. It is also about life, war, family, acceptance, courage, love and it’s limitations and just about everything else.
You have to be dedicated to getting the full meaning. Yes, he is considered a serious read. But it is wonderful at the same time. I’ve read One Hundred Years of Solitude three times now and it still enchants me and I am amazed by what Marquez does with theme.
I started with 100 Years of Solitude and was immediately enamored of the magical realism style. Writing down the characters is definitely a helpful tip, but a few chapters in and I found myself firmly entrenched in the world Garcia Marquez created. I have read almost everything he wrote now. Highly recommend.
It is a serious read and u have to concentrate more than on a bestseller say. But I loved love in the time of cholera and 100 years of solitude. But u have to be in the right phase of mind for it
I jumped into it as was promised to be great (there is wisdom stored and book has lots to offer), but it was a HUGE struggle. You might wanna Kill me all I didn’t enjoy this read

That sounds like a good plan
one hundred years of solitude is wonderful!! definitely a tougher read than your average chick flick but also… it is a classic after all 🙂
Well, you have to enjoy the fluid writing and not be looking for a mind twisting plot.
@Wanda bingo!

Start with the short stories. Marquez is certainly challenging but well worth the read.

Love in the time of cholera is not difficult at all.
No not at all! I enjoy Gabriel Garcia’s books!
Not at all! I do believe, though, that a lot gets lost in translation.
Not at all, beautifully written. Read 100 Years of Solitude, incredible
His books are wonderful!!!
