Has anyone read Sue Grafton books and if so should you read them in the order that they were written?

I have read them and yes, I would suggest reading them in order because some details carry over.
Thanks
I’ve read them and recommend reading in order. They are very good
Excellent books. Definitely read them in order.
Loved the character! Read them in order.
I read them up to N, then got tired of same thing, like it was no longer a mystery. That’s just me.
@Diana I know what you mean. Sometimes with series, I take breaks with other books. Yes, it interrupts the flow and I usually have to refresh my memory a bit, but I do it all the time to avoid burnout of the same type subjects. That being said Love Sue Grafton! ❤
Really like her books yes read them in order
I would read in order – so sad that they didn’t get to finish…
I’ve read them. Like the others said they start to drag after N and the story line just repeats. Reading in order will make more sense as far as the characters and their lives but it really doesn’t matter as far as the mystery.
I agree with you Susan.
Love her books recommend reading in order. Once you r finished with one you can’t wait till the next one.
Absolutely!
I’ve read them all and I think you would enjoy them more by reading them in order. I enjoyed the series and I have all of them.
There is also a thread of her personal and family life
I have read all of them. It’s my opinion that you should read them in order. They are good, quick reads.
I read them all in order. It is better that way because there is an underlying personal story that is easier to follow if you read in order. However, each book tells its own story so it is not necessary.
I think in order, not a continuous story but makes more sense
Yes, preferably alphabetical order?
Definitely. Her life changes, she grows older, ppl come and go, and even technology changes. These really are meant to be read chronologically.
Like her books very much
Love them
Agree….
Love them…did not read in order…not necessary.
Her books are very good. Interesting characters.
My OCD made me read them in order. I would recommend it.
I would recommend reading in order, because there is some backstory involved, but it’s not necessary.
So much fun to read. I liked reading them in order.
I’ve read them with no regard to order, and have thoroughly enjoyed them!
All are good!!
i agree to reading them in order! you’ll learn to love the characters more & more as they go through life
Yes, not a complete continuation but there is a story line. Great books
I have read them out of order with no problem. I’d read the first couple first just to get the background.
I listened to a nice interview with her on Fresh Air.
My husband and I are in the process of reading her alphabet series. We have listened in order and there is character development with the recurring characters. You wouldn’t have to read in order but I think it adds to the enjoyment of the series. We are enjoying them!!
yes, they are great books – much better if you read them in order
Yes, the got better as she went alonh
Loved them! After a while, she feels like a good friend that you care about.
in order
Great choice…I vote for in order as well.
One of my favorite series ever. Definitely read in order
I get that you’re supposed to read them in order, but what kind of genre does she write. Romance?? Mystery? Historical??
@Sherry the alphabet series is light mystery, but I heard she died before completing the series. Maybe like Dick Francis, someone might be familiar with her style and finish the series.
K thanks
@Margaret she died after Y. She had half written Z but didn’t want a ghost writer to finish it apparently. Lol i get told off all the time at work by customers because she didn’t finish it.
They are wonderful! Read them in order they have a story line!
Awesome books! Great character development! Must be read in order!
I recently completed finding the whole series and just started reading A, gonna be some great reading this spring!
Yes read in order they are very good books
Yes I agree. read in order. I read everyone.
Most definitely. Read in order
A quick fun read!
Read them all in order
Great fun reads
Fantastic books and yeah definitely in order
Love them. In order. Some people read them over and over again. There’s a fan club available to join if you choose to do so.
Great books! Start in order
I would read them in order some of the last ones I didn’t care for.
Omg love her must be read in order!
Thank you everyone. Based on your recommendations I am going to go get A and start. Too bad she never finished.
@Michelle she passed away and her family didn’t want anyone else finishing
reading Q is for Quarry right now – great books!
They build on each other.
They’re so good that even though I’ve read them once I’d read them all over again.
In order
What does she wtite about ?
Mysteries that take place in a town like Santa Barbara in the 1980s.
@Susan It’s called the Alphabet Series, mysteries. About a P.I. named Kinsey. She’s a loner but tough, investigates murders, etc. A is for Alibi is the first one. I loved them.
Yes.
Yes!
Yes. Got formulaic after awhile. Good reads. Read until you get the formula…at least 8 books.
I agree. Good reads and need to be read in order.
Yes! Good reads.
Read them in order, definitely. Love her!
Read them all! Good reads!
Begin with A is for Alibi, and work your way through the alphabet
In order!!
Yes. Loved the first few but after that I got a bit bored.
I have read a few but I really stopped after 5th or 6th I lost interest
Definitely in order.
I’m reading them now! Definitely read them in order!!
In order, but I recommend only 2 or 3 at a time, then something else before reading a few more.
She is good you start with a and b
You absolutely should read them. She’s a wonderful writer. She started as a screenwriter in Hollywood and went on to the Kensey Millhone books. Great reads!
I’ve read through P is for Peril and have loved every book in the series. I have read them in order and by doing so, have enjoyed the development of Kinsey’s personality & her life. She feels like an old friend now. If I had read them out of order, my relationship with Kinsey would feel disjointed.
She’s my favorite author. Yes, read them in order if you can.
Sue Grafton is one of my favorite authors and I too started with “A” is for Alibi. I find it easier to understand the character by starting with the beginning. You won’t be disappointed.
Sue Grafton passed away last year. She took the series (Kinsey Millhone, Private Detective) to “Y” and that’s where it ended. I read every book and was never bored. ?
I didn’t know she had passed away…
One of my favorite series and I would advise to read them in order to get the development of Kinsey. Enjoy!
I love her books, and although it’s not absolutely necessary to read them in order, they are much more enjoyable if you do si
I read everyone, really enjoyed them, yes read them in order
I am reading them in order for the second time. She was my favorite author.
Love her books…I did read them in order but not sure that is really necessary…
YES. .. Best to start with A
Yes read them in order
agree!
read many of them–she pretty much explains who the character is with reminders that there are no cell phones and many other electronics that we use everyday now, but did not do so when the character was first created. I don’t think they have to be read in order, but you will probably end up going back to earliest ones before moving too far along. she is a good read.
Yes read in order
I’m on her last one now, Y. I would read them in order, they get much better as she moves through the alphabet. I’m sad to start the last book, Kinsey, the main character, has been part of my life for years now! Sue Grafton passed away, and I’ve read there are no plans for a Z, which is sad.
@Cynthia I understood she started z. Maybe someone will finish in her style.
Or z will be simply z-end.
Michelle Hudson That’s what I was hoping. Her character is so well developed I would think there would be a talented writer out there interested in finishing the series.
I have one at home. Got it years ago, I don’t know where from. I dunno if I read it. ?
Me – I’m on V, I have read them in order as I am a bit pedantic about that but they are all good stand alone stories, some parts have me howling with laughter, the characters are so likeable
I love the Sue Grafton books. I listened to them on audio book. It took about a year and a half. I was slightly traumatized when the narrator changed around G or H!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Sue Grafton’s A-Z mystery series! Just sad that she left us before she could finish. They are easy, quick reads that keep you turning pages. Jump in and enjoy!
Not absolutely necessary to read them in order but if you can you should.
Yes & yes! I think they are light reads, nothing too scary-I listened to them-fabulous reader! Sad there will be no ‘Z’
Love her books!!! Read in order…it helps you know her and the main folks that go book to book.
I have read them all but not in order. Easy read and easy to follow her main characters.
I loved her books and you should absolutely read them in order. She made it so easy to do that!
Read in order…you will come to know and love Kinsey
