I love to read a real book but Kindles are great for big thick books and when you are working out. Also, as my eyes get older it is nice to be able to adjust the font on the Kindle to a bigger size.
I tried the kindle and like the convenience of downloading books but I found that looking at the screen for so long does bother me, can’t beat ink and paper!
Both but it’s easier to read on my kindle as I get older. I love being big able to increase the font size and have the back light. I was always a book person but not so much any more.
I am just a book reader before. Someone gave me an old kindle (with no backlight) but still i did not convert. I only will use the kindle when i cannot find the book in the stores or when it is really cheap.
But I discovered kindle paperwhite and never looked back to reading actual books again.
It depends. I love/prefer an actual book. Kindles are great for travel. But I have discovered Audibles for driving/commuting to and from work. I guess it doesn’t matter to me as long as I am reading/listening.
Preference has switched to Kindle Paperwhite. But will read a paper book if I really want to read it, and can get it faster that way from the library. ☺
Plus I have about 500 paper books that I’ve amassed in my personal library. I need read those some day too!
you don’t know what you’re missing by making it one or the other.. I love books, but moving them, holding them, the cost of them makes my Kindle a God sent and I actually read more on my Kindle than if I just read books.. and at the end of the day it’s the reading that’s important, not the method of how we get the words.. I think you are cheating yourself by not even considering a Kindle or some kind of electronic book.. but hey at the end of the day it’s a personal decision and we all make the one that’s best for us.
I totally agree. The kindle can store thousands of books, it’s usually cheaper, easier to carry, etc. I use both, but, as you said, I think it’s silly to limit it to one or the other.
I do almost all of my pleasure reading on Kindle on my iPad. Keeps me from hoarding books I will never read again.
When I had my bookstore I can remember some types of customers that would definitely benefit from the Kindle: 1. People that need large print books. 2. People with arthritis in their hands that were unable to hold larger books. 3. People with allergies. I had a customer that couldn’t read any book that had any age on it due to allergies. All that being said, just READ!
i appreciate that. My bookstore was a used and rare bookstore, so they didn’t benefit from that either. I think they do in some countries, although I can’t imagine the accounting nightmare.
I prefer books because I also collect them and have a nice library. Sometimes I’ll read on my iPad, but I really prefer the real thing. My husband travels constantly for work, so likes a kindle for its ease.
I like Kindle for the convenience, comfort, and mostly because it allows me to give away my library. Then I like audiobooks for all the same reasons plus the delightful experience of listening. I read books others lend me. Three years I would have sworn I would never switch from books.
Both. I enjoy holding a book and turning the page. Something about seeing how far along you are in a book as you see the pages being turned. Kindle is instant and more convenient in terms of downloads. I also like that you can instantly learn the meanings of unfamiliar words with kindle. Downloads tend to be cheaper also.
Both!! But kindle doesn’t take up much space in my room and I can carry it anywhere.. but I’ve recently switched back to books because I need less screen time
Whatever’s handy. Hard copy is always my first choice but, if it’s twenty below and snowing and I want a new book, nothing beats being able to download it from my warm and cozy house!
Kindle. It was a hard transition at first because Im so used to holding the book and flipping the pages. But I like having access to thousands of books at once and not needing a book light anymore helps too lol
It is one of my favorite parts about listening to books. If you get a book read by the author you know it’s read like it was intended to be read. It just means so much more to me when an author reads their own book.
I find my Kobo so handy and I get separation anxiety if I leave it at home as it slips so nicely in the front pocket of my back for when I just want to read but I do miss the beautiful colourful book covers.
Both..if it’s text only kindle is fine but of it has graphs or recipes I don’t like digital. My last book I bought hard copy because I wanted to lend it out after I read it
Either one but books are way better for me because I can smell it and have the feel. Kindle is portable if you want to read a few books at the same time or if you are on travel
Both! Audio too! I love actual books the best, but sometimes it’s more convenient to use my kindle app. Also, some kindle books are cheaper. And I listen to Audible on my commute to and from work.
I love everything about a physical book but a few years ago, I had to start wearing progressive lens and I can only read a book if I sit in a certain position with the book in a certain place. I couldn’t deal with it so I bought a Kindle. There are some very cool pros to using Kindle. And I can read in any position!
One of my favourite things about reading a book is getting away from all the devices. Of course you are still reading a book when it’s on Kindle but to me it feels like another screen, another device.
I was always been a vehemently books only person, having been book mad since a very early age. A few years ago I got a tablet and started downloading from Bookbub and the rest is history. The beauty of it is that I now have hundreds more books, which I couldn’t have done any other way because my library at home is groaning under the weight, I’ve run out of real-book space! So thats the advantage… But a real book, especially an old, much loved and well read one, is always best.
Definitely books! I love bookstores and the excitement of se searching for a new favorite. I also like to decorate my home with books, though I’ve run out of bookshelves!
I always have a book with me. It is in my hand, not on my phone. People know and respect this, and are always curious about what I am reading. Great conversation starter. How many great conversations have I had with waitresses about the book I lay on the table.
My book never fits in my purse, but comfortably in my hand. At the gym, I read while on treadmill, with the book propped against the screen. Other machines are not as book friendly. I’m not anti-kindle; I just prefer books.
Awww, look at all the paper snobs! (J/K!!!!) I’m ereader 99% of the time. I’m NEVER bored waiting at the doctor’s office, or in que anywhere. AND, I don’t kill my back doing it, either. The weight of the paper adds to the weight I already carry in my purse…
One of the things I do love about ebooks is accessibility. Accessibility in two ways, actually. I know several people with eye issues or chronic pain issues and ebooks allow them to read again. And accessibility in what I can get my hands on. I live in a small town that doesn’t have a great library system. It doesn’t participate in interstate library lending. We do have a lot of great ebooks in Overdrive, though. Additionally, I have fee-based library cards from two of the largest libraries in the country and access to their ebook library, so there is always something there for me. And I get a lot of advance readers in ebook format. I do read both, as stated above, but would read ebook over mass market any day. I don’t understand why some people believe they are superior because they read physical books only. It’s silly.
I am not asking for any other reason than curiosity. Feeling superior because you read books over Kindles sounds ludicrous. I just haven’t been able to get into Kindle reading. I find that I get distracted when I try while I am totally absorbed with a book. I’m just glad people read and I also fear the demise of bookstores.
I know that you aren’t. It is really some of the responses on here that I find a bit silly 🙂 Our local bookshop actually sells ebooks in store, but things like Amazon, Book Outlet, Thriftbooks, Books By the Bound are more likely to take local bookshops out of business than ebooks are, in my opinion. I’ve seen it happening in my community for a while.
So true. Although I am part of the problem regarding Amazon. They are so much less expensive! And I buy a lot of used books from them. I do buy a lot from Barnes and noble too.
My husband is definitely a book person, I can go ether way. I used to only read from my phone and it was costing me a small fortune. Then a friend introduced me to Overdrive at our library and I have not bought a book from Amazon since the summer. My husband and I go to Goodwill stores on the weekends and I find a ton of books there! So my TBR list is huge! ?
Both. Reading is more important to me than where it comes from: a book, a kindle, an audio book etc. Sure, books have their own beauty, but so does my kindle when I want to read a 900-page ( and weighing 2 kilos in print) book that I will carry around. To each his own, I guess
This. I feel like so much of the debate devolves into snobbery. (Not here, but IRL). I’ve been told I’m an “idiot” for reading a Kindle or a “typical millennial” (I’m 37 and have been reading since I was 4).
People have told me when I was listening to audio books at work that “this is not reading”. When I bought a kindle, I heard “it doesn’t smell like a book” – what that has to do with reading, I have no idea. In general, those comments were not from avid readers, but I think it came from a sort of frustration (maybe it’s not the best word) at me always saying I’ve read this and that when going out with a group and someone mentioned books. I understand what you say, and honestly calling someone an idiot because they are reading is sad. Goes for the millennial, too.
Mostly Kindle. My eyes like the larger font! Also I can read faster with the narrower lines. Some books, though, like cookbooks, or books with illustrations or pictures, are better on paper. So, it depends. I have three Kindles, the original touch screen, the paperwhite, and the Kindle Fire. Love them all, and always have one with me wherever I go.
Used to be a book only, but now I’ve been converted to the kindle! I have a fire but i want to get a paperweight someday. I will read paper books when it’s not available at the library and it’s the most economic decision. Sometimes Kindle books are more than the paper version.
Book.
But i fly in and out of work to a minesite so my kindle is indispensable.
Book only. I will listen to books when I am traveling.
Kindle mainly because I can read it one-handed and anywhere, anytime! Love my kindle!
Both
Kindle almost exclusively.
Both. The more the merrier.
Mostly audio books for me these days!

Exactly!
I do both, but prefer books.

E books
I am just a book reader before. Someone gave me an old kindle (with no backlight) but still i did not convert. I only will use the kindle when i cannot find the book in the stores or when it is really cheap.
But I discovered kindle paperwhite and never looked back to reading actual books again.
Both! Best of both worlds.
Books! The rough feel of the paper and the smell! I like a new book for the smell but an old book is charming ☺️
Mostly ebooks with a sprinkling of real books
Book only. Everything else causes headaches.
Both. I usually prefer books but it’s nice to travel with a kindle
Books, the real deal?
Both
It depends. I love/prefer an actual book. Kindles are great for travel. But I have discovered Audibles for driving/commuting to and from work. I guess it doesn’t matter to me as long as I am reading/listening.

Both, with a heavy bias towards the kindle, purely due to price and ease.

Kindle now to be honest
Kindle
Books. Kindle is great while traveling but books are the best!!
Preference has switched to Kindle Paperwhite. But will read a paper book if I really want to read it, and can get it faster that way from the library. ☺
Plus I have about 500 paper books that I’ve amassed in my personal library. I need read those some day too!

I prefer books, but I do read on my Kindle. But I don’t know what to do with my hands when I put the tablet on the table.
I only buy kindle books now. I still read paper books via library or gifted.

Books only.
Audiobooks are my favourite. It makes getting jobs done so much easier.
love both kindle & print…don’t care for audiobooks as i like to read
Do both, but books are always better.
I read both. Prefer & appreciate a real book on my hands though. ?
you don’t know what you’re missing by making it one or the other.. I love books, but moving them, holding them, the cost of them makes my Kindle a God sent and I actually read more on my Kindle than if I just read books.. and at the end of the day it’s the reading that’s important, not the method of how we get the words.. I agree Gayle it is so much easier to read and store books
I totally agree. The kindle can store thousands of books, it’s usually cheaper, easier to carry, etc. I use both, but, as you said, I think it’s silly to limit it to one or the other.
Both! Kindle is cheaper….
Book! A millions times over, book.
Both but Kindle is way more comfortable and convenient. Plus, I don’t have to part with my collection each time I relocate!
Both but mainly Kindle on IPad do Ai can enlarge the font and have the back light .
Both but prefer real books. Asldi, Nook not Kindke
Who cares! What does it matter?…just enjoy the read!
Think they’re just trying to generate a conversation!
@Emma sorry, didn’t mean to sound snarky…. just an old argument…would rather hear about books! ?
Kindle-issues with eyesight. Thankful I can still read!
Booooooks
Book
Books more but so as to not keep my honey awake at night I will read kindle
I do almost all of my pleasure reading on Kindle on my iPad. Keeps me from hoarding books I will never read again.
When I had my bookstore I can remember some types of customers that would definitely benefit from the Kindle:
1. People that need large print books.
2. People with arthritis in their hands that were unable to hold larger books.
3. People with allergies. I had a customer that couldn’t read any book that had any age on it due to allergies.
All that being said, just READ!
My only wish is that independent book store owners could benefit from kindle book sales.
i appreciate that. My bookstore was a used and rare bookstore, so they didn’t benefit from that either. I think they do in some countries, although I can’t imagine the accounting nightmare.
Book ?

Books are preferred but I’d be crazy if I flat out turned down a kindle. SO convenient and often much cheaper! I couldn’t go without either.
Books
Books for sure! I love the smell and I like being able to follow my bookmark thru the book
Books! But kindles work better for deployment, saves rack space ☺️
Kindle!

Hands down books only but electronic readers make traveling easier
Kindle
Both!! But kindle doesn’t take up much space in my room and I can carry it anywhere.. but I’ve recently switched back to books because I need less screen time
Both! I don’t discriminate! But I do work at a library so it’s mainly books with the occasional ebook.
Book
Both are good
Both
Both! Kindle at night, book by day, so I always have 2 on the go #winwin
Both.I love the portability of the kindle.
Books ?
Either
Book
Kindle. Better for traveling, can read in bed with lights off, can adjust size of font. Still read real books every once in a while though!
Same, there is just something about reading books. I could never read from a Kindle or any digital reading platform.
Whatever’s handy. Hard copy is always my first choice but, if it’s twenty below and snowing and I want a new book, nothing beats being able to download it from my warm and cozy house!
I’ve used a Kindle, but not anymore. I’m satisfied with getting all my books from the library. I like to turn a page.

Both – since I got a cover for my Kindle that is like a hard bound book ?
I prefer books but I really want to receive a Kindle reader as a gift ?
Books or ereader? Kindle is an Amazon vehicle.
Love my kindle! I like have instant gratification if I want a new book!
I like both so if I buy a book I buy a physical copy but if it’s from the library I get the digital copy.

Books. But, I also listen. Adds another dimension, especially when the author reads.
It is one of my favorite parts about listening to books. If you get a book read by the author you know it’s read like it was intended to be read. It just means so much more to me when an author reads their own book.

I love everything about a physical book but a few years ago, I had to start wearing progressive lens and I can only read a book if I sit in a certain position with the book in a certain place. I couldn’t deal with it so I bought a Kindle. There are some very cool pros to using Kindle. And I can read in any position!
Books only for me
One of my favourite things about reading a book is getting away from all the devices.
Both. My Kindle is easier to take to work with me.
Definitely books! I love bookstores and the excitement of se searching for a new favorite. I also like to decorate my home with books, though I’ve run out of bookshelves!

Prefer books but I do love my kindle 🙂

Prefer books but kindle is useful if travelling or on holiday etc.
I prefer book, but I also use Kindle for work!
Definitely books, but I also use my kindle a lot. It can be a lot more convenient for travelling and cheap books

Both. Kindle for traveling.

Both. I have a kindle app on my phone so I always have a book with me
I always have a book with me. It is in my hand, not on my phone. People know and respect this, and are always curious about what I am reading. Great conversation starter. How many great conversations have I had with waitresses about the book I lay on the table.
@Patricia I do that too but sometimes I don’t have my purse or I’m at the gym
My book never fits in my purse, but comfortably in my hand. At the gym, I read while on treadmill, with the book propped against the screen. Other machines are not as book friendly. I’m not anti-kindle; I just prefer books.
Both. For me, the medium isnt the important part — the story is.
Ereaders are hard on eyes. I read slower, and flipping as frequently is annoying. Love my paper books.
That’s so funny because I read faster on the kindle
I bet you’re younger, don’t have astigmatism or early cataracts. ?
Oh, and I read about 1000 words/min. I’ve been tested.
Book and audio , i drive 100 miles a day so audio is great
I do both, but I find after staring at my computer screen all day I’d prefer to look at a physical book when I read

Mainly books but sometimes Kindle
Kindle! I haven’t read a paper novel in years. I read some nonfiction in paper when I can’t get them for my Kindle!
Print, but I do use the kindle heavily
Both. I enjoy regular books but I have also discovered many excellent authors through reading on my Nook also.
Book exclusively only rarely nook
Can’t beat that book smell ?
Books, though I have a Kindle and a Nook, I just didn’t get the same feeling when I held it or turned the “pages”.
Both.
Can’t help but observe that several who prefer books go all caps about it, but none of the ereaders or both do.
Both. A kindle is great if you’re going away and don’t want to lug loads of books around. For a normal day, I prefer a book.
Both. I’m an equal opportunity reader.
Books
One of the things I do love about ebooks is accessibility. Accessibility in two ways, actually. I know several people with eye issues or chronic pain issues and ebooks allow them to read again. Great point! My sister can read again because of Kindle as well.

Book, kindle, and audio….. of course an actual physical book is preferred, but I won’t turn down any form!!

I like both but I prefer reading on my tablet at night because of the light. I dislike book lights that clip on.
Both. Cheap and fast reads on Kindle and solid reads by noted authors on the real thing.

kindle. No more room for books and I can read it on several devices and never lose it.

I love physical books..but kindle can be nice when I can’t find it at library & is a little cheaper.
Prefer books but take Kindle on trips
At home – paper. Traveling – Kindle.
After hospitalization last year? Kindle only. My eyes are slowly going… going… gone.
Sorry the eyes are going. I understand, Kindle keeps us reading when we would otherwise need to give up.
Can’t stop now, bibliophile in action!
Real books, unless I’m desperate.
Book
Both, but mostly Kindle. I carry around too much without carrying around books, too.
I have a broken finger, all in a cast. Kindle only for a while.
There is no right or wrong, it is good to have options.
Mostly Kindle. My eyes like the larger font! Also I can read faster with the narrower lines. Some books, though, like cookbooks, or books with illustrations or pictures, are better on paper. books only
Both – At home I always read “real” books.
But I have my kindle in my handbag at all times for when I travel or waiting in a ling cue somewhere…
At the end of the day, no matter what you use to read, you still doing what you love
Books only here.

Physical Books!!! ???
Both. I go to the library or use my kindle. Free books either way!?
Have you looked into Kindle unlimited?! It ups the “free” choices
I haven’t.

kindle; easier for tired hands and eyes
Real books preferred.
Used to be a book only, but now I’ve been converted to the kindle! I have a fire but i want to get a paperweight someday. I will read paper books when it’s not available at the library and it’s the most economic decision. Sometimes Kindle books are more than the paper version.
Does your library have Overdrive, or something like it? Most of the books I read on my Paperwhite (❤❤) or my Fire I”ve borrowed from my library.
Yes! I do overdrive and i also do kindle unlimited. Only once I’ve had to buy a book not available anywhere else that’s it
Kindle, because I am legally blind and can enlarge the print. iPad and Kindle have changed my life.
