Films vs Books
Books are always better than films, but are there films you have watched and then preferred not to read the book?
I deliberately make sure if I fancy a movie that is from a book that I read the book before going to see the movie
I don’t think I have! If the film is even remotely good and I find out it’s a book I’ll usually read the book too, because it’s always better.
Nor have I. Exactly the opposite. Books will always be better than films in my opinion cause one’s imagination is beyond any film director’s eye!
Not crime but The Devil Wears Prada, the film is far better than the book!
I think that is the first time Ive heard someone has preferred the book to the film. I enjoyed that film too, but not read the book
Meryl Streep brought a dimension to that character that was above and beyond what the reader could imagine.
I’m sure some people find some films better than some books. It’s very subjective.
I think it’s sometimes difficult to transfer the story from a book to film or TV drama exactly as it was written, and often the book is far better and the film or drama disappointing. Equally a TV drama or film may not read as well if it was written down in book form. Glad we have all three, and love my psychological and police procedural TV dramas, but I could never be without my books!
Bones… Not the same in any way as the books.
I think the movie The Book Thief was better. Couldn’t finish the book but loved the movie.
I actually enjoyed both
I enjoyed watching the film of The Firm by John Grisham but found that I definitely understood the film a lot more after reading the book.
Not a film, but I started reading the Handmaids Tale after watching the series and really didn’t enjoy it x
i prefer books x
I try to avoid both reading a book and watching the film. Why not read/watch something new? E.g., the No Country for Old Men movie was my introduction to Cormac McCarthy, but I read five McCarthy books before reading No Country for Old Me (which is probably neither his best book nor as good as the movie).
No
I love Gone with the Wind as a film, it’s my favourite but I read the book in my 20s and was surprised how different it was. I loved the book but also the film is still my favourite film. In general though books are better.
I was in my twenties too when I read the book ( many moons ago) . I think it is still the longest book I have read. I also enjoyed the film.
Books every time. If you watch the film first then read the book you realise you have just watched a crap film.
Not always. Not in my opinion anyway.
Jaws was one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Great movie.
My site often compares the books with the films and it is surprising how many draw or exceed the source material
I don’t think that books are always better than the film
A film is ‘based on’ or ‘adapted from’ a book, there really is no comparison, it’s a completely different art form.
I tend to read the book first, and if I see the film first then I don’t bother with the book.
Loads of films based on books that i’ve enjoyed more than the book.
TV rather than movie, but I read the first Game of thrones, but decided that ultimately I preferred the series and prioritised watching over reading the other books
I preferred Before I Go To Sleep on film. But the book of The Girl On The Train.
everything everything, I have preferred film in quite a few cases
No books every time
Books always
Books are better most of the time, but not always. THE GODFATHER is a better movie for example. DIE HARD improves on the novel considerably. CASINO ROYALE (2006) does as well.
I never read a book after seeing a film, I’m more of a book person
I watched the movie The best of me I never read the book. Sometimes I’ll read the book then watch the movie.
