I want to read it, my husband did years ago he said but he said it was dull? I did read Bram Stoker’s Dracula and loved it. I may have to give Frankenstein a go!
There is a really good annotated Frankenstein that I recently read. It compares the different versions of Shelley’s text, gives lots of interesting info, and points out Percy Shelley’s influence. Highly recommended.
I had to read it for an education ethics class along with Flowers for Algernon. Liked the book but still lost on what’s its point for the class. The later book was written by a professor at my university. I would recommend the short story over the book. I think the book was for the movie and add fluff that wasn’t needed.
I love it, so long as the work is in the original 1818 edition (which is the version Norton Critical Edition publishes). The revision in 1831 weakened the book, IMO.
It was a selection for our book club and everyone loved the book. I never knew how Frankenstein came to be and thought it was great that a female won the competition.
I love it! It is a story about prejudice of those who are different and the effects of isolation from being bullied, shunned, feared, hated. All of these are modern themes in an 1818 work. It shows we haven’t changed much.
Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorite books!! I don’t know how far in you are, so I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so I’ll just talk about the beginning . . .
I absolutely loved the premise–the frame narrative that he’s writing home. It’s a really cool way to get the story told because, since he’s explaining everything to the audience of his letters, we get to feel as though we’re really getting all of the detail that we normally wouldn’t get if we were just watching the events unfold with a different narrator. It allows Walton to inject his thoughts, feelings, and emotions into it, and, personally, it made me feel more invested in the story overall.
What are your thoughts so far? Are you enjoying it?
My favorite!
Classic, of course. Amazing tale of how humans persecute those who are different.
Never read. I’d like to though. Let us know what you think.
I actually just started watching The Frankenstein Chronicles on Netflix ? – Anna Maxwell Martin plays Mary Shelley
It’s also about how technology will dehumanize us. She wasn’t wrong.
I read it in high school and loved it. It’s a classic!
I just loved it. Enjoy
Its in my audiobook cue . As soon as i finish Madame Bovary, ill be starring it
Love the story how it was written
My husband and I listened to it a couple of years ago during October. Mary Shelley was brilliant. Much different than I expected.
I just started it too!
One of my absolute favorites!
Very dark and different than movie versions.
I read that in my early teens, and again around 10 years ago. Good book!
Not what I’d initally expected. 🙂
Loved it. It’s so different than any movie version.
Are you reading Mary Shelley’s original 1818 text or the more popular 1831 version?
Read it more as social commentary than horror.
Yes
Enjoy!
I just started reading it too
I. Hope it is Mary Shelly’s original. It is the best.
This I taught to college kids who loved talking about it.
WONDERFUL BOOK!!

You’re in for an amazing read.
I really enjoyed Mary Shelley’s original version. It can read as a horror or social commentary.
Read it years ago, but always liked it.
I loved it!
I was amazed how I empathized with the creature and loathed Frankenstein. Classic revenge.
Ditto. It’s an interesting social commentary. Love this book.
Don’t skip to the end and come back.

I’ve been trying to get through it, but it’s not grabbing me. ☹
Good Book! 🙂
Love it! Need to re-read it after seeing Mary Shelley’s own first edition with her notes.
So far so good

Thank you! I completely agree. I had a professor who dismissed the revision as unimportant.
I read it fairly recently and really liked it.

I was surprised when I read it to find those themes.
Very powerful book and very sad, both Frankenstein and his creation are filled to the brim with great anguish.
One of my favorites!
I think I may need to re-read this one.
My all time #1 book of all time
Great book hard to believe she wrote as a teenager.
I have read it several times, starting in 1962. It is still a favorite.
Are you reading th 1818 edition or the 1831 edition?
Good point
I lead an online lit class. We’re studying Frankenstein this next year. I’m trying to decide which to use. Any thoughts, @Judy?
@Marda none that will assure you. Good luck deciding.
Moving. Really empathized with the monster and didn’t like the doctor at all, coward for abandoning his creation.
I enjoyed the beginning through middle, but found the ending to drag.
I liked it
Kathy, our quilter, makes all these wonderful decorations.
AWESOME book!!!!!
Enjoy!
One of the few books I hated
Awesome read. Totally classic.
Tedious at times but a worthwhile read! It was so different from what I expected. ?
It takes a while to get started, but it’s worth it.
One of my all time favorite reads. It really surprised me because I had grown up thinking the movie told the whole story.
My favorite book

One of my favorite books from college! The backstory and life of Mary Shelley are fascinating.
Love it. One of the only horror books I can read and reread. Learned years ago about feminist themes in the story. Really changed my perspective.
Just finished it and I enjoyed it more than I expected great story
Great book!! It’s even better the second time!
One of my favorites!!
I enjoyed.
One of my favorites!
It’s really great. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I remember there being passages that spoke beautifully to what it means to be human.
