Any thoughts on 1984 George Orwell? Just started it and looks like I’m in for a confusing read.

Excellent
Classic not confusing at all
No it’s not really confusing. I thought it was a really interesting a good read. Written very well compared to some classic novels.
I loved it.
Prophetic
It is one of my favorite books of all time.
I’m re-reading it right now, first read it about 30 years ago
Loved it!
A book that will stick with you for decades. Loved it 40 years ago and plan it re-read it shortly.
I watched the movie first and that helped
Great literature. I’ve a soft spot for this one. I was Julia in the play at one time. ?
Keep on keeping on.
One of my favorite classics.
Read it
Stick with it. It’s really good
Loved it!
Loved it.
Great book. It’s a dystopian novel.
So good I have a tattoo about it.
On page 30 and I’m the same. It’s confusing
It’s definitely a difficult read. Go to http://sparknotes.com/ and read the chapter summaries before you read the chapter. Makes a world of difference.
It relates to the present in so many ways. Important book.
Yeah its a WTF book
It’s complex but ultimately rewarding, plus it has very important message to teach. Enjoy!
Excellent book
I didn’t like it, the ending left me scarred!
What scary is that you see a lot of this book in the real world today.
^ Early voting is open in many states today!
Emily Antul in what state? Nothing on website, I can’t even get a postal vote yet
http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/early-voting-in-state-elections.aspx
37 states are voting early. Massachusetts opened today
Emily Antul wrong country lol!!! We have an upcoming election in Australia too
I was wondering what the heck you meant by postal vote, given that only Oregon allows vote-by-mail. We’re so backwards here.
Read it. And then look around you and be afraid. The Thought Police are already growing in number…
Found it very interesting when I read it years ago a lot of prophesy came true
My favourite, worth persevering. Also loved Keep the Aspidistra Flying.
I always found Orwell’s writing style difficult but it is a fantastic book and more relevant now than ever.
I read it at school which was long before 1984 and again last year. Interesting to see my different reactions to it 50 years apart. Keep reading.
I wasn’t a big fan, but I will say it was worth struggling through.
A very disturbing book but one that should be read.
Read it at school and hated it. But that may have been because it was a ‘you will read this’ school thing!
Read it years ago but I think we are living in an Orwellian society now.
Early voting is open in many states! Get out there and change that!
Loved it
Loved it
I agree- this is an important book that is relevant today- plow through if you must. You will be glad in the end.
I should read it again. Too young to appreciate it when I read it before.
It’s a confusing read to start with, but it will ruminate on your consciousness for years afterwards, and society just keeps on giving with this one!
Was about 2/3 through then skipped to the end. Did not like it
It took me 2 years to finish lol but I eventually did. It was a good read but I enjoyed Fahrenheit 451 much more which is a similar concept
It’s a difficult read but absolutely NECESSARY!
Even if you don’t like it at the end such book is going to make you think and reflect about society, rights, life and war, mass media and truth and a lot of other matters that rule everyone’s life.
Even if it’s difficult I suggest you to try and read every day some pages… I promise it will be rewarding at the end!
Personally I read it every couple of years<3
Excellent read!
Remember reading that in high school and thinking how far 1984 was in the future.
I love it. I had to read it in school in the 70’s. It was kind of cool to think about whether or not 1984 would be like it was in the book. I’m not sure what impact it would have on my now that it is long past 1984! We had to read Animal Farm the same year. I loved that book as well. Neither book is in the school curriculum in my area anymore.
My husband loved it. I read a little of it just couldn’t finish bc I couldn’t concentrate. I felt like it was a book that needed my full attention
I read it in high school. It’s an alternate reality when really bad people control the government and change word definitions to meet their needs whenever needed, lie about the opposition… it’s an authoritarian, fascist society. Very worth a read.
It was a hard read but also an interesting read. A dystopia somewhat similar to our lives right now
Brilliant did it for O level English!
A precursor of what we’re headed to if we don’t reclaim our government and our institutions. Voting matters!
Its a good read
Probably because it is really happening
Its a fantastic book. Stick with it.
I like it. I read it a long time ago but remember it well
I loved it
I found it challenging but I think that is because I had heard about it, knew it was s classic and expected it to be taxing. Stick at it, but it’s not an easy flow big read
One of my favourite books.
I have never read this but animal farm is an amazing book
It’s s classic … stay with it
If you like dystopian it’s a great book to read
Brilliant. Worrying how much has come to pass as predicted.
You might like to read Brave New World as a comparison.
I liked it but it was bit tough to get thru because it was so strange
Loved 1984 x
It is a good read however, there are plenty of free online reading guides that kind of assist!!
Cliffsnotes, Reading Group http://guides.com/
The online resources are free however, can be printed!!
Enjoy reading ? ?
Brilliant
Fabulous book, thought provoking, and I remember the old film adaptation is pretty cool too.
There is a new movie that came out. I had no trouble reading it, my problem was starting it, it took me 3 tries. But I enjoyed it very much.
I love it. It’s one of the few required readings that I liked. Because it made me think. But I also love dystopian novels.
Great
I loved it in high school, probably time to revisit.
