Has anyone read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein?? I’m having to read it for school and OMG I just can’t seem to get into it…

I read it twice, where are you by?
Total snooze fest
Lol yes exactly
At least it’s short.
True
My son has to read this for school – not holding much hope in him enjoying it as he hates reading ?
Well I love to read and I can’t get into it lol
I loved it.
I loved it
I read it in school and hated it. Tried again a few years ago & still didn’t like it. I ended up just skimming it.
It’s a story within a story, I enjoyed the middle but not the rest. If you want it explained for school then try Thugnotes on YouTube. A rapper explains many classic novels and is brilliant. But be aware he does swear a bit!
Oh thank you!!
Yes, I loved it…not like the movie versions at all…
I loved it as a kid. Read it more than once too!
I loved that book
This might help
Spark notes are good too
Its the only time I liked the move more.
I loved it too , sorry ?
I have never read it but you might be having a hard time getting into it because the time period it takes place during. Would they let you listen to it on audio book instead?
Yes I think that’s exactly what it is
I loved it
Get it on audio and read while you listen, you will get through the book in no time and it brings it to life
That’s a great idea. I’ll share with my daughter.
@Sally plus you can set to a faster speed, get through it a bit faster.
It’s horrible. It’s one of the absolute worst I have ever had to read. I too had to read it for school. I had my mom read it to me. It is that bad. And even she said she hates it. Good luck and I’m sorry you have to read that horrible book.
Lol thank you. The struggle is real
Love it!!!
Had to read it for 9th grade English and just couldn’t do it either. May or may not have read the Classics Illustrated version instead ????
Great read. I read it a long time ago.
Try and watch a film version of it to help you put faces, voices and scenes in your mind whilst reading. Meanwhile, why oh why can’t schools try harder to instil a love of reading in their pupils instead of a dread at having to write yet another essay on an arduous book?
movies are nothing like the book…
I agree, but if you’re struggling with a text it can help bring it to life.
Its hard but its good I think
My daughter bought it for her uni course and I borrowed it. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how little any film adaptation even resembled it. Great book especially considering she was only a teenager when she wrote it. Everyone has their own taste though so if it’s not for you move on!
Keep going – great book.
I read it for A Level English a lifetime ago so had no choice, but I got a B after persevering
Shouldn’t probably be saying this but if you look the book up on BBC Bitesize it will tell you everything you need to know for school. ?
Sweet!!
It’s a very intellectual book. Mary Shelley was from a family of intellectuals, and her vocabulary, for one so young, definitely shows that. You have to keep in mind too the time during which this book was written. It takes more discipline to read such a classic.
Science Friday picked this book for their book club last spring. Listening to those podcasts added a new dimension to it for me.
I read it whilst listening to the Eurythmics album with “No more I love you” on it. Very atmospheric. The book is better than any film of it and the themes of human connection, loneliness and rejection are wonderful. Makes me want to dig out my copy and read it again! Back to back with Dracula ?♂️
Ok you convinced me i will read it again.
I read It back to back with Dracula too! Hated Frankenstein, loved Dracula
When you think of it as either the story of a father who abandoned his son or a scientist who abandoned his experiment and look at how the monster tries to fit into society, you may start feeling something for the poor monster.
There are so many layers to this book.
Getting through books like this will help you in so many ways….critical and analytical thinking being the most important. And if you go on Jeopardy, you could win. Stick with it. It is short. Do not read the Cliff Notes.
I did it for a level and loved it!
Read it decades ago. Studied it, read it again, wrote papers on it at uni, completely fell in love with it. I think knowing a bit about the context in which it was written helps.
Yes read it few times and my son just did it for school before breaking up for summer
I read it back when I was a teenager. The language might be a bit difficult at times but it was worth the read, I ended up loving it.
Loved it but it isn’t for everyone. Thankfully it’s fairly short
I read it a few years ago when I was having an ‘I need to read the classics phase. I got through it, but I didn’t like it. Wasn’t she under the influence of some narcotic when she wrote this, or was that someone else
Yes. It’s great.
When my class read it, the audio version made it much better for them. I think it’s free since the copyright is so old.
Can people say why they loved it and what was it about the book they liked? How did they enjoy it? This might make it easier for others to find a way in?
I had trouble with it in high school, then reread it after seeing it in umpteen movies. Maybe see some of the films & read some of the reviews & analyses. Do the reading yourself, though, then glean from others. Don’t plagiarize.
I loved the commentary on “outsiders”. I had to suspend belief for a a bit of it but overall I found it to be very different to any Frankenstein movie I’d seen, an eye-opener.
I have my classes read the chapter summaries on spark notes first before we read anything difficult in class. Then they understand it as they read it. It makes a huge difference in comprehension.
Keep reading. it is so @Shelby
Sorry: it is so good
Look at it as a story of a child who only wanted to be loved, and got rejected and abused because of his appearance. It is actually a very sad, heart wrenching story. I love it and cry every time I reread it. I hope it will find its way to your heart.
I loved it too, but can understand that it’s a bit weird to get into at red.
I loved it, read it twice, once for class and once for entertainment.
I hated it!!!!
I read that and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and loved them both
My husband read it and keeps telling me to. He said it’s one of the best books he’s ever read.
It is short would not take long
I loved when I read it in high school, but yeah, the writing style of the times to over describe the landscape was a bit trying.
Listen to audiobook on you tube and Follow Mr Bruff onYou Tube .will help X
I am not sure if it is a good read for school… But if you read it when you are ready and then just for yourself and not class, it is quite good. I had a same experience when reading Moby Dick. At school meh… All this analyzing… But as I re-read it a few years later it was a whole new book with a lot of things I noticed for myself. However, for this genre I would still recommend Dracula more than Frankenstein.. ?
Was it something she created or apart of all of us…..
Absolutely loved it
I loved it. But i listened to the audio book.
Loved it.
I listened to the audio book.
top 5 favorites of mine!
It is a very sad story….but well worth reading
