Hey Friends, what is the absolute best book you have ever read that you recommend to everyone? Mine would be Shantaram.

Who is the author?
Bonnie Sue Mefford Roberts Gregory David Roberts is the author. It is based on his life. He escaped prison and fled to India to hide. He did all kinds of things to make money and survive including working as a ”makeshift Dr” in the slums to drug running. He meets a fabulous array of quirky characters and brings India to life. He is eventually captured years later and sent back to Australia to prison and that is where he writes this book. It’s really good!
I loved Shantaram!! I don’t know many that have read it except my friend that recommended it.
The Samurai’s Garden
Jessica by Bryce Courtenay. It’s fantastic, and it’s nice to find a good book set in Australia. It’s based on a real story but it is an emotional and heartbreaking read.
Lonesome Dove & Centennial.
The Poisonwood Bible
The Red Tent. The Help
I read A Child Called It in 8th grade and it stuck with me. It’s such a sad story..
I read them all so sad
But they now say it was not a true story
The grandmother and one older brother who was discharged for mental problems have claimed that after taking a lot of heat for not stepping in. Dave’s younger brother verify the abuse. He wouldn’t have been put in Foster Homes for nothing. It’s very hard to get kids taken away. Maybe he remembers things differently years later and experiencing them as a child but it did happen. If you read the last couple and see all he does for foster kids and the system you wouldn’t question it. People don’t usually go into the area trying to change it for no reason.
I never forgot that book.
I don’t believe that it wasn’t a true story. It just sounds like someone didn’t want to be portrayed in a bad light and trying to discredit the author.
@Vivi I agree with you. I read some horrible reviews on goodreads trying to discredit his story and it made me so sad. It makes me think about all of the children that are afraid to speak up about their abuse because they think nobody will believe them. Or even worse when they do speak up about a certain family member abusing them and the rest of the family doesn’t believe them! I can’t imagine how devastating that must feel.
Vivi Kay /Natalie yes exactly! The author says it’s true. He lived in a foster home after foster home and has done countless things for our children services in this country since he has become an adult. If he says it is true then it is true! And anyone who was not there has no right to make such statements on what did or did not happen to this person behind closed doors.
@Kerri very true
@Kerri I’m not saying it’s untrue I just heard it on some show
