What’s you favorite scary novel? I’m lookin for a thriller/horror/Stephen king like book to read.
Hey everyone! I’m lookin for a thriller/horror/Stephen king like book to read. Everything I’ve been reading lately has been kinda light and I’d like to read something different. What’s you favorite scary novel?
I hear The Shining by Stephen King is good
Pet Semetary
I actually quit reading King for a while after finishing Pet Semetary.
IT
There’s a YA series (3 or 4 books I think ) called Unwind or Unwound not sure which . Reminded me of early Stephen King. Very good –
Butterfly Garden
The Stand is my favorite King book.
I love Stephen King. One of his books that doesn’t get as much love as it deserves is Lisey’s Story. Fantastic!!
Some scary books I live by other authors:
The Good House by Tananarive Due
The Elementals by Michael McDowell
Ghost Story by Peter Straub
Ghost Story!
The Passage by Justin Cronin
House of leaves by Danielewski
I really want to read this book
@Kimberly I loved it. It’s a different kind of scary, like less jump scares more under your skin creepy
I’m going to find it today !!
Loved Pet Sematary.
The Bird Box
I’m reading this at the moment.
Try John Soul
Check out F. Paul Wilson “The Tomb”.
Joe Hill ( Stephen King’s son), Clive Barker, Tess Gerritsen
Check out William Gay. His short story The Paperhanger is… Gahhhhh
I’d recommend Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (Stephen Kings son) was one of the best scary books I’ve read recently.
The birthing house by Christopher Ransom. At times it makes sk look like a beginner…
The Ritual by Adam Nevill.
Also, Stephen Graham Jones. And Dan Simmons The Terror. Peter Straub Ghost Story. Stephen King did Thinner as Richard Bachman if you haven’t read it. And for some old school horror, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s the Yellow Wallpaper
I loved The Yellow Wallpaper when it was done by Masterpiece Theatre (I think), and would love to read it.
Very quick read. Loved it
Very quick! And very unsettling.
Swan Song by Robert McCammon
Great book!
Unwind for quick read. If you have middle school/high school kids it is particularly good. Then Stephen King – Pet Semetary and Christine were very scary to read. Ignore the stupid movies.
Have you ever read Phantoms by Dean Koontz?? It’s my favorite scary book. I re read it every once in a while and it’s still great.
Following
Night Film by Marisha Pessl.
Love this book!
Loved that book!
Following!! I need a good scary book! Read most of these
John Saul
The Terror by Dan Simmons, The Stand by Stephen King, Swan Song by Robert McCammon, The Summer I Died by Ryan C Thomas, The Troop by Nick Cutter, Endless Night by Richard Laymon, Naomi’s Room by Jonathan Aycliff, Seed by Ania Ahlborn.
The Troop!!!!
Bird Box
Anything by Richard Laymon is great!
I 2nd Ghost Story by Peter Straub. College friends are haunted by something terrible they did years ago. Literally. Then watch the movie starting an elderly Fred Astair. Very “Stephen King” vibe.
Speaking of Stephen King. ….have you read his short stories? Two of his best (I think) are 1922 and A Good Marriage. There is a movie out for 1922 on Netflix…..don’t waste your time on it.
Not a big Stephen King fan, I have nightmares easily. But, loved The Stand. I also enjoyed Intensity by Dean Koontz and also Lightning by Koontz.
Bird Box – Josh Mallerman
Intensity by Dean Koontz is pretty…. well, I’ll just say it, intense.
Exactly how I always describe it, lol.
I’m still reading that one for 2nd time
I’ve just started this one Head Full of Ghosts, by Paul Tremblay, for the same reasons. Need something scary to offset my light, fluffy Christmas reads. I’m not far enough in to say if it’s exactly the mind boggling, terrifying read that I was looking for; but I have high hopes. After all, Stephen King said it scared the hell out of him… it must be good, right?
Shaun Hutston’s Nemesis
Head Full of Ghosts . . . I wondered when I started it why I was reading what looked like an annoying YA novel but when I realized as I kept going what the author was doing, it got better. By the end, I was impressed and glad I read it. But although I liked it, it didn’t ‘scare the hell out of me’.
These are all such great suggestions! Thanks everyone!
House of Leaves
Have you tried Joe Hill?
I read Nos4a2 and loved it! I have the fireman on my kindle but have yet to read it.
