Why not read both? Historical fiction can give context and the human effect of events and can make the importance of those events easier to understand. Once interested, the reader can then go on to actual history books to get more details and sort out fact from fiction.

I completely agree. A good historical novel has just enough history to get the reader interested in finding out more.
