My wonderful husband is giving me money to buy some audiobooks for Valentine’s Day. I read women’s fiction, fiction. mysteries and some historical fiction. Suggestions please! Thank you!
Rhonda recommend fiction historical fiction mystery audio book
“The Spy Wore Red”, by Aline, Countess of Romanones. The first book in a historical trilogy of her personal experiences as a spy for the OSS during World War 2.
A book coming out next week I think, White Houses by Amy Bloom, John Hart books, A Gentleman in Moscow, Rules of Civility, Brad Parks book called Say Nothing. You have a really nice husband???
Thanks for the recommendations! I do have a really nice husband. And, you have a really nice brother-in-law!
Gentleman in Moscow is a great audio!
You MUST listen to Tom Hanks’ book, Uncommon Type. He does an excellent job writing and narrating.
Oh I am going to get this tomorrow. It is on my list. I almost forgot.
For historical mysteries, I enjoyed The Mistress of the Art of Death series. The Flavia de Luce audiobooks are among my favorites. Beautiful narrator Jayne Entwistle. Also try Tana French series, Susan Hill’s Simon Serraillers, Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks and Daniel Silva.
Buying is great but hope you know you can get them from the library too?
Yes, what I do is check the library, if I can’t get it or if the wait is too long, that is what I buy.
@Marie me too?
“Irena Sendler: Mother of the Children of the Holocaust”, by Anna Mieszkowska et al. The story of a Polish social worker who helped 2,500 Jewish children escape from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War 2.
I was just looking at this one today, thanks!
“The Warrior Queens”, by Lady Antonia Fraser. A historical look at women who led armies and empires. Includes Cleopatra, Isabella of Spain, Indira Ghandi.
“The Name of the Rose”, by Umberto Eco. Historical mystery fiction.

See if you can get the books on overdrive first before you buy. I only buy those I can’t borrow from the library
I listened to Gentleman From Moscow on Audible, it was exceptional – lots of voices by different actors.
My sister highly recommended this, on my TBR list. Thanks!
Sorry about this! I was sending proper suggestions and must have touched on something by mistake and this came up!? What I was trying to say was that the type of historical novels I enjoy are anything by Phillipa Gregory, and some by Hilary Mantel. H.M. with Wolf Hall, and Bring up the Bodies, although they are heavier reading than P.G. books.
What an awesome hubby <3
Thanks to everyone, this gives me alot to think about!
I’m listening to Dan Brown’s Origin presently and enjoying it!
He sounds great, does he have a brother ? Lol
Sorry, no brother!
The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin
Just picked this up from library but haven’t started it yet. Loved Swans of New York too.
@Rhonda, for historical fiction the winner is: the Circle of Ceridwen!
There are so many fabulous historical fiction written by women these days. Under A Painted Sky is one of my favorite. Funny, action packed, compelling and great protagonists. Excited for the sequel: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22501055-under-a-painted-sky
With the raging flu this winter A Death-Struck Year is a timely and fascinating read. Set during the flu pandemic of 1918 it is historically accurate and terrifying. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18222767-a-death-struck-year
Use Overdrive or icloud from your library for free. Use the $ for something really fun.
If you haven’t read Salt to the Sea, it is a must read. The story of refugees trying to escape the Russians at the end of WWII. Movie is in the works right now. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25614492-salt-to-the-sea
Between Shades Of Grey by the same author is also very good and Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan is good.
Vicki Lane’s mystery series set in the Appalachians. Strong, mature female lead character, a little romance thrown in for spice, well written, and suspenseful.
Saw an ad for Michael Robotham’s Night Ferry. Looks good.
The Good House By Ann Leary. The narrator made this book twice as good.
Any of Neil Gaiman’s books read by himself. Pride Prejudice and Zombies is narrated really well, any Agatha Christie. 🙂
Try Bernard Cornwell for historic fiction. You will probably love him.???
America’s First Daughter, A Hamilton Affair, both historical fiction based on real women
