Wicked series by Gregory Maguire is good even if it’s not based on a fairytale

The Bear and the Nightingale is a retelling of a Russian Fairy Tale.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is kind of a retelling. It’s how the Queen of Hearts in Alice kn Wonderland became the Queen of Hearts

All of Marissa Meyers Lunar chronicles are retellings of the various princesses set in a future sometimes steampunk type world…

Most of Gregory Maguire is retellings

There’s more but I’m blanking right now 🙂

I loved this one. It’s sequel “Red Queen” wasn’t as good but still worth a read. And this author’s “Lost Boy” was great too.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik! It’s kind of a Beauty and the Beast retelling. She has a new book called Spinning Silver which is based on Rumpelstiltskin. I haven’t read it yet, but I have high hopes based on how good Uprooted was.

C.J. Redwine has a few retellings. I liked The Wish Granter the best (Rumplestiltskin retelling)

Liz Braswell has 3-4 Once Upon A Dream is one.

There are retellings that explore the villians of Disney. By Serena Valentino.

I know people have already said this, but the Lunar Chronicles were a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a shallow YA book series but I actually enjoyed them very much.

Pardon the long post, but this is iver of my favorite kind of books to read!

The Starlit Wood is a collection of short stories based on fairy tales which features some fantastic authors and a good range of styles and themes. Red Riding Hood as a western? Yes please!

Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier is a mixture of The Frog Prince and traditional transylvanian folklore. Its told from the perspective of a teenaged girl struggling to hold her family together in the wake of besr father’s illness and an interfering (and annoyingly sexist) older cousin. (Her other books are pretty good too!)

You’ve probably heard of Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik but I’ll just add that I LOVED it. Its rumplestilsken (kinda).

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey takes the titular fairy tale into the Alaskan frontier and the door of a childless couple struggling to survive the winter (and hold their marriage together).

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson is the tale Bluebeard set in the steamy Mississippi countryside, southern belle era. It also has ghosts!

Till We Have Faces is a lesser known work by CS Lewis which is based on Cupid and Psyche (base tale for Beauty and the Beast) and explores in a mature and decidedly unpreachy way man’s relationship to the divine, or the IDEA of the divine and the possibly divine self.

The Fables series of comics by Bill Willingham is AWESOME and I’m not really a big comic book reader.

In The Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente is a book of tales within tales within tales (etc.) inspired by 1001 Tales/Arabian Nights. Its brutal and beautiful all at once.

The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan is based on irish Selkie tales and is perfectly sea soaked and melancholy. She also did one called Tender Morsels based on Snow White and Rose Red but it was a little too much for me personally (portraying rape etc.)

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is based on Russian folktales and is book one of a trilogy. I like the unique take on the wicked stepmother and villain roles.

In the Forests of Serre by Patricia McKillip is about Baba Yaga and it actually mkes you feel like you’re reading a fairy tale.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is actually about a fairytale writer, but is more of a gothic story.

Howl’s Moving Castle isnt based on any specific story but manages to feel like every bedtime story you’ve ever heard rolled into one.

Hope there’s something here that sounds good!
