Listen at the speed you read – if you are a faster reader, then you need to speed up the recording. I could not listen to audio for the longest time, but this has helped me immensely.
you also have to find readers you connect with. mine was the poet x. since then I’ve found a whole bunch I love. scythe is a really great one too
I like the fully immersive experience of listening and reading at the same time. It brings the book to life and stops my mind from wandering.
Start with a book that you know and love. I can only reread via audiobook at the moment but working up to the books I can’t get easily in this country
Do a search for fantastic narrators. They will make or break an audiobook experience.
Look for Roslyn Landor, Justine Eyre, Anne Flosnik as readers. There are more great readers but these 3 are a good start
Keep trying. The more I try, the easier it gets.
Are you listening while driving? If I’m driving, I can only listen to books I’ve read previously, otherwise I’m distracted and not paying enough attention to the book to enjoy it
I agree with those who suggest start by listening to a book you have already read and enjoyed.
Keep trying… I have to be doing a task(such as cleaning)while listening to my books. Can’t be sitting doing nothing, my mind wonders off.
Listen while driving.
I agree with the people who suggested listening to something you know, but I’d also like to suggest a non-fiction book that you’re somewhat interested in but don’t mind if you miss something. I felt the same way as you but I tried listening to Henrietta Lacks and now I’m an audio-junkie. 😀
I love audiobooks. Start with an author you like or a light read. If the book is too complicated or the language tricky then you will have more trouble. It also makes a difference who the narrator is. You will get the hang of it but it takes some getting used to. I listen in my car all the time. I also have to speed it up as it drives me crazy when it is too slow. Good luck and enjoy. It is worth it.
Definitely makes a difference who the narrator is. I was listening to a book, but the narrator was awful. Her tone of voice and intonation was all wrong. I had to stop listening, then picked up the hard copy and loved the book!
Definitely start with light easy reads
I usually try to listen to the first 30 minutes of the story doing absolutely nothing so I can get into the story. Then I am usually interested enough that I can do other things while listening
I’d say start with a funny book. That’s how I got into them.
I listen when I go for a walk. One hour of pretty scenery and someone reading to me. Perfect!
