Am I the only person who struggles with books based abroad! I really only get on with British crime fiction!

I am preferring UK based books
I must admit I prefer UK based crime fiction too.
Love European based books
Read Jo Nesbo Harry Hole series it’s brilliant
Will give them a try @Julie, always happy to receive recommendations!! I recently discovered Will Patching, awesome but not for the feint hearted!!
Ooh must read thanks
I love a wide range set here (GB), all over the continent, the Scandinavian authors, many set in the USA & Canada.what I DO strongly dislike is American authors who write books set in Britain with British characters who get it horribly wrong!
oh yes pet hate, especially when very basic research would have provided answers.
Ditto for British writers who set their books in other countries and get it wrong 😉
@Lesley indeed, yes.
I particularly hate the tendency to use Americanisms in British books, but then I am old, boring and pedantic 😉 ‘Detective’ is not a rank in the UK. The form or address would normally be Detective Inspector, for example, or Inspector, but not correctly Detective.
@Angelas hidden island was set on a Greek isle and I loved it, @Mel and @Lindas Deception series is partly in USA and they’re brilliant books
Thanks Craig, very kind of you. Xx
All your books are fantastic whatever country they’re set in
Aww… thank you, kind sir. xx
Anything me, just not keen on noir books xx
Me too!!
I am in Canada and most crime books I read are uk. Slang is very confusing at times
Donna Leon is great, her books are set in Venice.
Reading books set abroad should be okay provided you have the appropriate clothing – pour instance, The Wallander books and most Nordic Noir, can be quite chilly…
Weird but I only like books set in the USA. I’m English though
Try @Quentin‘s Sergeant Gunnhilder series, set in Iceland. Terrific.
The location isn’t necessarily important to me as long as the book doesn’t turn into a travelogue.
It hugely depends on how they are written- for instance I really enjoyed the early Patricia Cornwell books (feel they went off after about book 8-9). Generally love Scandinavian crime fiction. How the language is used is key but also the general quality of the book
For so e odd reason I particularly enjoy books based in Scotland! Stuart Macbride is a particular favourite!
@Sharon can recommend plenty I am sure!
Jackie Baldwin too
Oh yes indeed! @Alan @Michael @Douglas Neil Broadfoot @Craig @Graham @Owen @Alison Lin Anderson Anne Cleeves (Shetland series) to start off with ? its my favourite genre!
don’t forget my books, set in Portsmouth and occasionally in London, but they can be read in a Scottish accent to great effect and, I am told, it can enhance even more the enjoyment for the reader – and I quote, Mavis Scuttle of Fyffe bananas, “Ahh stop yer ticklin’ Jock”…just sayin…
Thanks, Sharon.
@Douglas always welcome! Hope you are on the mend!
I wish I could say yes!
@Douglas aw not so good ?
Thanks Sharon…but open your mind to New Orleans!!!
@Owen I can be persuaded to travel on my reading journey at times ?
Thanks @Sharon.
@Alan always welcome Mr J ?
Scandinavian crime fiction is great and plenty of good American writers.
I am an Aussie but I prefer books from UK writers, particularly Scottish ones.
I think crime fiction should have plenty of texture and atmosphere, which is why I like the northern (Scottish and Scandi) writing too.
Read books from Swedish, Dutch and USA and UK authors. So many good writers all over the world
I much prefer them based in USA and I’m from England
Me too, Most of the 2 a week crime novels I read are USA based, all series too.
I first started reading the Maigret books as a teen and had no trouble with Parisian place names. When I moved on to the Martin Beck novels, I admit to having trouble with Swedish place names though. I just ignored the awkward names and enjoyed the stories.
I like Donna Leon based in Venice!
I love reading and writing about foreign locations…the wanderer in me!
Not really.
Me too! Plenty of Brilliant UK crime fiction to keep any avid reader fully occupied.
Oh, no! That makes me so sad. I’m an American crime fiction writer and I can assure you all that my serial killers are just as cunning and deadly.
I believe you David!
I do, but I was hoping others didn’t as I’ve almost finished a Brazil based title with a UK protagonist. I’ve read some fantastic tithes based in the US, Au, Netherlands, and Mexico though.
I love books set abroad but only if its well written.I like to learn about other places
Funny enough I started reading Crime fiction with Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman. This got me hooked on Scandi Noir (, horrible term I know, sorry) like Indridasson, Mankell and The Martin Beck books. It’s only recently that I have discovered Ian Rankin. There is something about the landscapes of Scotland and the Scandinavian countries that lend themselves to murder fiction!
No problem for me!
