That is hard. Its between the shining and the pet semetary. They were both scary. The shining just was freaky in itself but for Pet Semetary I think it really rings true the despair and levels that parents would do when grieving a child. Also its a tragic creepy ending.
The Stand because I love apocalyptic stories with average men and women and I love good vs evil storylines. Lisey’s Story is my second fave. It spoke to me in ways I can’t explain. ?
The Long Walk because I couldn’t get it out of my mind for days after I read it, so I picked it up and read it again. And that’s VERY rare for me because I do NOT reread books. I love 11/22/63 too, but for different reasons (I love time travel, I’m obsessed with JFK and the 60s, etc).
Doctor Sleep- the sequel to The Shining ( which is my second pick). DS had a little of everything and was very well written. It was a pleasant surprise to read.
For a long time it was The Talisman, then The Stand, then It. But having re-read Pet Sematary again recently, I have to say it is one of his most under-rated novels. And currently my new favourite.
(1) Salem’s Lot, scared the ‘blank’ out of me, but I couldn’t stop reading it. (2) The Green Mile, just because it was an excellent read, in my opinion. .
This is a great post, ya’ll are gonna get me reading SK again. I have The Green Mile and 11/22/63 sitting unread yet, and now lots more that sound good.
i read Dead Zone (I think that’s the title) way back when, that was excellent too and I’d like to reread it. I never did get through “It” but I liked what I read and loved the movie
@Jennifer great book and I loved the movie too! I’ve got the sequel, but I haven’t read it yet! Apparently they’re going to be making that into a movie also!
@Jennifer I’m currently reading “It” so I think I’m going to re read The Shining after then Dr Sleep! I’ve been on a bit of a King binge recently myself, just finished Rose Madder a couple of weeks ago, that’s another of my favourites, there’s so many!
Hmm. Tough call… Probably Bag of Bones because it made me feel every emotion I could think of. And also The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon because baseball lol. The Stand because it’s epic. Hearts in Atlantis because it moved me. It because I love childhood/adulthood stories and it scared the pants off me. And Dreamcatcher because of Beav and his toothpicks and , of course, because of Duddits.
My personal favorite is “The Running Man,” although IT is something all unto itself…. it’s a horror master class. I finished that and basically thought “ok I never need to read another horror novel.”
The Stand,
It’s a doorstop but the development he does and the storyline are amazing and totally worth it!
The Shining. It’s one of only three books to ever scare me.
The Shining – scared the crap outta me
The Mist. Insomnia. The Body. Under the Dome.
The Shining. I thought it was a good story. I’m not a huge fan of his writing style.
Mike Di Pietro
That explains the page long descriptions. I’ve been outside dude. I know what a tree looks like but thanks. ?
Mike Di Pietro
I’ve only read a few. Which books are you referring to?
Mike Di Pietro
I thought the ending of the Shining was a little obvious and it wasn’t the big bang I was hoping for.
Mike Di Pietro
I don’t too.
That is hard. Its between the shining and the pet semetary. They were both scary. The shining just was freaky in itself but for Pet Semetary I think it really rings true the despair and levels that parents would do when grieving a child. Also its a tragic creepy ending.
Green Mile
Carrie. I got bullied in high school and it was one of the first Stephen King books I picked up on my own and read.
Followed by the Green Mile and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption.
11/22/63. I loved the historical perspectives and the “what if” scenarios..
The Stand, because it’s so dramatic. Closely seconded by The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
The shinning and dr sleep
Under the Dome.
The dark half and Pet Semetary were scary. 11/22/63 waa a good time teavel book.
The Stand-such an epic story. I had never read anything like it up to that point.
The stand. Scare the heck out of me.
Dolores Claiborne
Misery….just so creepy, great story and they really did a good job with the movie ?
Green Mile because it pulled my heart strings and made me bawl!
The Eyes of the Dragon
The Shining !!!
The Green Mile
The Stand because I love apocalyptic stories with average men and women and I love good vs evil storylines. Lisey’s Story is my second fave. It spoke to me in ways I can’t explain. ?
Needful Things
I’ll have to go with the first of the Dark Tower series. It was probably the first ever proper book that I read as a kid. ?
My favorite is probably Joyland. I just really enjoyed the story. The scariest one I’ve read is The Dark Half.
Thanks peeps, there were some surprises which was great.
What’s your favorite?
The Shining!
That’s the first Stephen King book I read when I was around 11. I remember being blown away by his ability to tell a story.
Sleeping beauties
I liked the one about the cell phones, couldn’t use mine all day
Lol
only read one – Joyland – and loved it. It’s not one of his more well known ones.
Excellent book. It’s not his usual style, but it’s a good and solid story.
I love Misery but I’m now reading Salem’s Lot and it might knock Misery off the top spot.
Mr Mercedes. Kept my interest to the end
Oooo, Nina, I forgot about The Long Walk! That is a really good one that’s very thought provoking. The Regulators is also really good.
The Stand because of the way society completely changes. For me, the scariest of his books that I’ve read is Salem’s Lot.
My favourite is The Shining, loved the build up and the characters
Night Shift- his first collection of short stories. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Shift_(short_story_collection)
The Shining, Carrie & Misery, because I can’t decide.
the stand, salems lot,
The Stand…well written, best good versus evil book ever.
The Green Mile
Doctor Sleep- the sequel to The Shining ( which is my second pick). DS had a little of everything and was very well written. It was a pleasant surprise to read.
I loved Doctor Sleep!
Just read Dr sleep and it’s a great follow up to The Shining.
Doctor sleep is my next read, looking forward to it ?
Tommyknockers. It had some his best storytelling.
The Dark Tower series, the Talisman, the Stand
Love The Talisman.
Insomnia
The Shinning
Needful things
The Stand, because it’s fun to listen to the audiobook while having the flu. 😉
??????
The Stand
The Talisman. I really enjoyed the parallel universe concept.
I need to read more King cause I’ve only read two but saying that, a pleasant surprise for me was “11/22/63”
For a long time it was The Talisman, then The Stand, then It. But having re-read Pet Sematary again recently, I have to say it is one of his most under-rated novels. And currently my new favourite.
The shining and IT
Firestarter
The Eyes of the Dragon. I always wish he’d write another one like it. And The Stand as far as his “normal” writing goes
The Dead Zone, because it’s about how the universe really doesn’t give a damn about you or what it does to you.
Carrie
@Christine
Bag of Bones
Insomnia, still can’t sleep because of it.
(1) Salem’s Lot, scared the ‘blank’ out of me, but I couldn’t stop reading it. (2) The Green Mile, just because it was an excellent read, in my opinion. .
Cell, reminded me of modern society going crazy through electronics
This is a great post, ya’ll are gonna get me reading SK again. I have The Green Mile and 11/22/63 sitting unread yet, and now lots more that sound good.
I feel reading everything all over again!
Typo feel like
i read Dead Zone (I think that’s the title) way back when, that was excellent too and I’d like to reread it. I never did get through “It” but I liked what I read and loved the movie
I have quite a few favourites of his, but I’d have to say Misery, Insomnia and Duma Key are among my absolute SK favourites!
The shining
Jennifer Gabriel what is your favourite SK book?
The Shining!
@Jennifer great book and I loved the movie too! I’ve got the sequel, but I haven’t read it yet! Apparently they’re going to be making that into a movie also!
I’m reading Dr Sleep right now, so far so good. Maybe that’s why I posted this question. Love SK.
@Jennifer I’m currently reading “It” so I think I’m going to re read The Shining after then Dr Sleep! I’ve been on a bit of a King binge recently myself, just finished Rose Madder a couple of weeks ago, that’s another of my favourites, there’s so many!
I know right? I feel like going on a binge too lol
The girl who loved Tom Gordon, and cell
So far Song of Susannah, it is the 6th book in the Dark Tower series but I loved it so much,.
Haha
It brings so many childhood memories but I cannot say it is a horror novel the real horror novel is salems lot. ..
Cujo is a realistic novel
But I think something wrong with that name I named my friends dog “Cujo “later it became rabid and died luckily he didn’t bite anyone
Salems lot it is an excellent book a bit slow up to page 200
Sorry page 100
Only love his book On Writing …. the rest creeps me out.
