The Graveyard Book. I remember my elementary school librarian read the first 2 chapters of this book to my 5th grade class and it made a lasting impression on me.
Try one of his collections of short stories. Trigger Warning is my favorite. All of his books are good; The Graveyard Book and Ocean at the End of the Lane are my favorites. American Gods is now a tv series on Starz so maybe you want to read that book first (they’re a little bit different from each other).
Neverwhere is good for your first one. It kind of encompasses all of his styles and isn’t too fairytale or too dark. Stardust is a bit more fairytale and American gods is a bit darker. Anasi boys is a good one too, just to dip your toe in. And he has a comic book series and some kids books or short stories as well. (I’d go with fragile things for short stories)
Welcome to the world of Neil Gaiman! He is one of my very favorites. I agree with the others – start with Neverwhere or Stardust, or any of his young adult titles. And if you’re a fan of audiobooks, he reads most of his own books and is fabulous at it.
I. Fell in love with the Sandman Graphic Novels back in college. I tried to read Good Omens but I quickly became bored with it. Maybe I’ll try some of these others.
OOH. I’m tempted to say The Ocean at the End of the Lane, but Neverwhere is great as well. And there’s American Gods, if you’re interested in seeing the Starz TV series. Enjoy! I’m excited for you to discover the great world of Gaiman! ??✨
I don’t know, I haven’t seen the TV series. I liked the book American Gods quite a lot when I first read it, but upon re-reading I found the book was quite slow. It takes longer than it needs to in getting to the climax of the story.
American Gods
Stardust
Neverwhere
Stardust or The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Neverwhere, that book changed my life.
Stardust
The Graveyard Book.
The Graveyard Book

The Grabeyard Book or Neverwhere imo
The Graveyard Book or Good Omens
The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
Reading that now
Trigger warning is awesome!
I loved Neverwhere and Stardust. His short stories are excellent, too!
These are both excellent gateways to Gaiman’s style and cleverness.
I started with Stardust. Just don’t start with American Gods. ?
I started with the graveyard audiobook. He reads it himself. He’s such a great story teller!
That one was good
I’d say Neverwhere, Stardust or Graveyard book. All lighter reads. Then I’d take on American gods ?
I started with Anasi Boys and really enjoyed it and everything of his I’ve read since.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a short read but it’s amazing.
Agree! My first was American gods which I loved, but this was such a good read I’d always recommend it as a first.
I liked that one too
I liked it.
Good omens
I think that’s the answer when anyone asks about a good recommendation.
Stardust
“Snow, Glass, Apples.” A short story that’s a different take on Snow White. Can read online here: https://thedreaming.moteofdust.com/1999/10/10/snow-glass-apples/
Neverwhere
I loved American Gods. Stardust was good too and you can also try Norse Mythology.
The Graveyard Book or Fortunately the Milk are great YA books of his. Easy, quick reads.
I started with “The Ocean at the End of the Lane.” Loved it!
Good omens

Good Omens
Anyone read Ananci Boys? Not sure of the spelling. It was my first Gaiman after seeing the Graphic books, the
Dreaming.
Yes the spelling is almost correct. It ends with ‘si’. I read it and liked it a lot.
You should read American Gods before Anansi Boys to get to know Mr Nancy.
I read after American Gods.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE ANANSI BOYS!!!
Love it!!
Jump in the deep end and start with American Gods.
Never where or Good Omens. I think American Gods takes a special taste… I didn’t care for it.
I read The Graveyard Book first and then Neverwhere. Highly recommend both of them.
American Gods was very tough. Maybe Stardust? Or Neverwhere?
OOH. I’m tempted to say The Ocean at the End of the Lane, but Neverwhere is great as well. And there’s American Gods, if you’re interested in seeing the Starz TV series. Enjoy! I’m excited for you to discover the great world of Gaiman! ??✨
I am currently watching American Gods and I’m tempted to read the book. Is the book better? How faithful is the TV adaptation?
