Thinking about reading some Neil Gaiman book. Should I start with Coraline or something other?
Thinking about reading some Neil Gaiman. I have pretty high expectations though and wanted to start with Coraline because I loved the movie so much. Any other recommendations?
Neverwhere for sure 🙂
I was just reading a description, it seems very similar to Coraline! Plus I really like the whole “Alice in the Wonderland” trope. I’ll check it out
Neverwhere in one of the greatest books I have ever read 🙂
@Shlok Gaiman’s spoken of how Coraline intenionally mirrors Alice in Wonderland and Graveyard book parallels Jungle Book.
Stardust
Coraline the book is a thousand times better than the movie. My two cents. ?
I loved the movie so I can’t even imagine
American Gods is AMAZING. But go with The Graveyard Book. Just to get to know his writing
My favorites are The Ocean at the End of the Lane and The Graveyard Book.
Coraline is a great book, it is a wonderful example of the author’s voice. I did not like the movie as an adaptation. I might have loved it it weren’t based on the book.
I wasn’t aware that it was based on the book when I first saw it. I actually just found out while looking into Gaiman. If I would’ve know, I probably would’ve read the book first- but now that I know it’s based off a book I feel like I have to read it lol
You’ll probably like it. I love the artistry of the movie and get the choices they made. In the book Coraline is largely solving things by herself. There’s no Whybie. But it makes sense that she needs a character to bounce off of. I also was frustrated because I used to read the book to my class year after year, but then the movie told them all the answers without them needing to figure it out. If you like quirky and weird then you’ll probably enjoy Neverwhere and Stardust too.
@Kris Thank you I’ll definitely give it a chance
I gotta admit I’m not sure about picking up a children’s novel or even YA novels anymore. Just because I feel like the story and writing in a lot of those books treat the audience like children and not respect them as adults to pick up their own informations
I think Neverwhere is his most accessible book, I’d start there, then move on to the Graveyard book, and then dive in. I prefer the second reading to the first on most of his simply because then i can see the intricacies of his plot weaving.
I really enjoyed American Gods, although it was quite odd (in a good way). He also narrated his own book, Norse Mythology, which was a joy to listen to – if you’re a fan of mythology.
Thanks I think mythology is cool but I try to avoid listening to audiobooks because I like to sit down and take my time with books. I also wanna read American gods eventually but I wanna get used to his writing first by reading his earlier books
Good Omens
Yes! My first Gaiman. ?
If you are even remotely interested in comics I would highly recommend The Sandman Series.
Never where is his best.
All of them. He has so many good books.
sandman, lucifer, and stardust
Start with the Graveyard book, Neverwhere and Stardust ? I loved Anansi Boys too. I just love him in general!
If you want lighter than The Graveyard Book, go with The Wolves on the Walls, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish (both picture books. please don’t judge me. I adore Gaiman!) and Fortunately, The Milk.
I love the dangerous alphabet! ?
Loved Neverwhere and Stardust best.
His kids titles are great. I LOVED “Fortunately, the Milk”.
The Ocean at the end of the Lane is excellent. But my favorite is American Gods
Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane on audiobook is amazing, it’s narrated by Neil Gaimen. I could listen to him narrate the dictionary. Lol
Me too!
Good Omens. Norse Mythology.
Anansi Boys is my fave Gaiman.
Stardust & Graveyard Book both excellent!
I love them all, but American Gods is my absolute favorite. I am also loving the series.
Neverwhere
M is for Magic.
