Love Stephen Kings movies but I’ve never read one of his books. What’s a good one to start with?

The Stand. It is a long read.. So worth it though!!!!
Skeleton Crew, Needful Things, Misery
Carrie it took me a couple days to read. Or Thinner. There is also Night Shift has a bunch of short stories.
I’m currently reading night shift and I’m loving it!
Carrie is a great read too.
I love both of those books. I can read and read them.
IT,The Stand,Salems Lot,Pet Semetry,The Dead Zone ??
I just started the outsider last night. Only 25 pages in but I like it so far
I always tell people to try Joyland for the first book, it’s slightly different to his other books with the style of his writing, but it’s thin, easy to read and a great start to King, then I would suggest Misery and his other thinner books to start off with before going for his bigger ones like IT and the stand.
@Terri I just finished Misery. I loved it. I will have to chech our Joyland.
@Crystal It’s so different to all his other books in the style, but I absolutely couldn’t put it down when I read it, I think I read it in two sittings, only because I really had to sleep XD
I definitely have to check it out then.
The Stand, The Shining, Pet Sematary, Gerald’s Game, Carrie, Dead Zone, Firestarter… so many good ones! And then Under the Dome and 11/22/63 are good but not scary like his others. He’s just a phenomenal writer.
11/22/63
Misery!!!!
The shining or the green Mile.
The Green Mile One Of his best
Needful things
I liked 11/22/63, not scary but time travel
Read 11.22.63!! Perfect for November.
Start with his first one. Carrie.
Salem’s lot or Pet cemetery x
The green mile
The Stand is very good
Misery
11/22/63. Just finished today. Good book!
I read Pet Cemetary when i was younger and haven’t read one of his since. I do have Joyland in the waiting tbr pile.
Same.. tried a few of his books and just didn’t enjoy them
The Green Mile
Different Seasons is four novellas in one book. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, The Body, and The Breathing Method.
Ask @Marianne she read them all!!!!!!!!
Depending upon your tolerance for scary stories. If you want to start light go with Carrie. If you want to get really scared go with Pet Sematary, It, or The Shining. They are all great books though. You could start and read them in order of publication. The books are ALL better than the movies in my opinion.
I started out with the shining
Misery or Rita Hayworth and the shawshank redemption
Start with the best one…..Christine..
The stand or salems lot
Just started reading 11/22/63. Not sure yet!
The shining, Gerald’s game
11/22/63
The Shining! Red rum, red rum.
The shining
The Shining
I loved Pet Semetary
The Green Mile,The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon…Stephen King id=s an acquired taste, maybe just me-but I need to be in the mood for his weirdness to tackle his books.
It.
Cujo
Needful Things
Different seasons. Short stories
The green mile was my favorite!!
@Christie Definitely, my favorite!
@Cathy yes loved the movie too but not as good as the book!
@Christie I agree. There is so much more to the story and characters that you don’t see in the movie.
@Cathy exactly
The shining, it, needful things, and thinner.
I enjoyed bag of bones.
Go way back. Carrie and Salem’s Lot. Good fun.
I don’t like his writing. I read early stuff a million years ago, maybe he got better with practice. Never tried again
The Green Mile. It’s fabulous ?
Christine was my first…
The Shining
Misery.
Yes!
Carrie, his first, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them…
Needful Things
Under the Dome
Salem’s Lot,Carrie!
The girl who loved Tom Gordon
I liked Cujo and Pet Semetary.
Start with his first novel, Carrie, and his first short story collection, Night Shift
11-22-63
Although not a novel, I am reading his book On Writing:A memoir of the Craft. Absolutely brilliant, this guy is a genius
Misery!!
Pet Cementery
The Shining and IT are my personal favourites xxx
The Green Mile
I’m listening to 11.22.63 on audio and loving it
@Judy yes! That was amazing
I loved Under the Dome.
@Eleanor i’ve been watching the programme Under the Dome on TV @ the moment and it’s brilliant didn’t realise till someone told me it was a Stephen King book lol ? x
Trust me…the book is even better! If you’re liking the show, you will LOVE the book.
I’ll have to have a look in library for it and order it in if they not got it at the branch up my end x
Just be aware that it is a very long book…over 1000 pages.
I don’t mind that, I read the limited edition of The Chronicles of Narnia in one go it’s all the stories in one big hard back and that was over 1000 pages. I don’t mind so much when it’s a good book, it’s just boring one’s with that many pages I would give up on x
I’m the same way, but I like to give people a head’s up. 🙂
@Eleanor thanks x
11.23.63
Start with his first and work up (or down) from there!!
Start with Carrie. You’ll be hooked and can go anywhere from there. All of his books are “can’t put down” good.
The shining is good
Loved The Shining! And I am currently reading Christine and I am already hooked and I’m only on chapter 8!
