Has to be Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Since its all one unfinished story one can’t separate it into just one volume, although I read the first Big Enormous Book “Outlander” more often. I’m not into fandom, but I”m definitely an addict to this series.
Firstly Diana has a way with words that is superior to anything else I’ve ever read. Her turn of phrase is wonderful. Beyond that she spends a lot of time doing research so the background details are amazing. All her fans are really enthusiastic about that. The story revolves around 2 people Claire, a 20th century WWII combat nurse who falls through a time portal and ends up in 1743 Scotland where she ends up being forced to marry Jamie, an honorable outlaw, nephew of the Laird of clan MacKenzie. But its not really a science fiction story except for the time travel. And while it is the story so far of 30 years of their lives, its not really a romance.Even so, the romantic passages are fabulous, and very steamy. There’s plenty of surprising adventure involving duels, war, battles, politics, wound through real, if obscure, history. The first 2 volumes deal with the ’45 and the rising for Bonnie Prince Charlie. By book 4 its set in the American colonies. The last 3 are set during the American Revolution. Indians, pirates, scoundrals of all colors, historical people like the King of France, Bonnie Prince Charlie, George Washington, etc come alive Her characters live and breathe. Een the animals have strong characters, a certain dog, a cat, a pig, a mule. She never goes where you expect in the story. Claire brings a modern perspective to 18th century life. She has a career as a physician so lots of interesting medical stuff. She’s not realy into housekeeping so lots of interesting details of how people lived in those times while Claire tries to become competant. By book 3 Jamie and Claire have an adult daughter, who grew up in the 1960’s but ended up time traveling back to meet her father. The daughter is an engineer, and “builds things”. Zillions of surprises and unusual twists. Diana has an incredible sense of humor. One of her fans wondered what an 17th century highland warrior father would think about his daughter wearing a bikini, so Diana wrote that in. She’s very interactive with her readers. She writes like no one else. For instance she does not write a linear story. She writes bits and pieces as they come to her, and weaves them into one wonderful story, which after 8 Big Enromous Books, several Novellas and short stories is unfinished. Warning, she is well known for having a problem with dates. For instance, he has Minnie pregnant with Hals first child for nearly 2 years. The fans don’t care. Mostly because when you get to that point you’ve already read about 8,000 pages. The thing is, these books are so rich in detail, favorite bits, etc. that they are infinitely re-readable. I don not reread because I remember the stories. But this series at 10,000 pages so far you just can’t keep in your head. And I can open any book anywhere at anytime and discover I’m at a favorite part. There are 2 places in the series where the story is very dark, hard to read, and not something you want to reread, but they are essential to the big picture. One is close to the end of the first volume and the other is in the 5th book “The Fiery Cross”. Despite our almost universal dislike of those 2 parts, all the fans reread over and over and over and over. There are even FB groups that endlessly discuss the books. My favorite group is Outlander Cast Clan Book Club. Although fandom for the TV series stars creeps in , this group mostly discusses the books. Most of the other fan groups spend their time drooling over Sam Heughan and David Berry who play Jamie and Lord John Grey in the series. But you could get a good “feel” for what people like about the books by hanging out there for a day or two. But there would be spoilers.
Books- I follow so many series- especially the Chronicles of St Mary’s one. But for Tv- it would have to be Dr Who and Supernatural.. Supernatural mostly for the eye candy?
Supernatural and How I Met Your Mother tv wise, though for books I don’t really have one as I prefer stand alones.
If anyone has any recommendations feel free to suggest them. (Just no Harry Potter or Cassandra Clare, I’ve been suggested those a good amount of times now lol)
HP gets it’s own category ? – books, movies, amusement parks, YouTube, everything Books – Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern world, Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance trilogy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics TV/Movies (way too many) – Doctor Who, Gotham, Buffy, Angel, The Walking Dead, Glee, X-Men (and Deadpool, included), and I will stop myself
JRR Tolkien, Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy, Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series, anything by Susanna Kearsley and Neil Gaiman. Star Wars, LOTR, GOT
