Ooo read The Meaning of Night!! It was so good I immediately went looking for the author’s other works only to learn he died shortly after writing it, his only book!
I got this out of the library and started it but was daunted by the size. I liked what I read and will probably go back to it but it seemed seriously long.
it is a bit of a slog initially, there was a point where I did wonder why I was reading it. It becomes intriguing after a while, I found it difficult to put down. I found it well worth the effort.
I’m into the Dead Key right now by D.M Pulley. It’s free with kindle unlimited and it’s really interesting. Very heavy imagery which isn’t really my thing but I can’t seem to quit it!
I like the Sister Frevisse series by Margaret Frazer, set in 15th century England,in the reign of Henry VI, the detective is a nun. Also C.L. Grace’s Katherine Swynbrook series, set in Canterbury in the reign of Edward IV, Katherine is an apothecary. I like the Auguste Didier books by Amy Myers, set in late Victorian and Edwardian England, the first one is Murder in Pug’s Parlour, they are very amusing.
The two current ones I most enjoy are the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley, about a young girl who lives in a decaying manor and just happens to be a chemistry savant, and the Bryant and May Peculiar Crimes Unit series by Christopher Fowler, about two elderly, crotchety detectives who solve bizarre cases like that of a drowned woman found sitting completely dry in her living room, or a man who dies of an exotic poisonous snakebite in a London club. These are particularly delicious because of the way Fowler makes London almost another character in the books, and London happens to be my favorite city.
I really love Kieran Shields series set in Maine at the turn of the century. One of the main characters reminds me of Sherlock Holmes. There are 2 books so far — The Truth of All Things and A Study In Revenge
India Black series by Carol Carr
I thought, “Devil in the White City” sounded good but I couldn’t get into it. But the plot sounded awesome!
I honestly didn’t care much for it. Interesting subject but the author’s writing just didn’t do much for me.
That is exactly what I was saying! I was hoping for so much more because the plot sounded so good!
It’s still sitting on the shelf, years later, with a bookmark around chapter 3.
C. J. Sansom’s Mathew Shardlake mysteries, set during the reign of Henry VIII. The first is Dissolution.

Hey @Trisha, me too! Blind Justice series is wonderful!!! You’re the first person besides myself that has mentioned it. Yahoooo
I just felt immersed in Sir John Fielding’s world. The setting was vivid and the characters well developed.
Absolutely!
The Alienist by Caleb Carr
News of the World, The Nightingale, Pachinko, Salt to the Sea…
Ariana Franklin’s Mistress of the Art of Death series.
I really enjoyed An instance of the of the fingerpost by Iain Pears.

Flavia de Luce is great! I need to read another one.
@Carolyn I think the most recent one just came out, but pick up where you left off. They have to be read in order.
C. J. Sansom’s Shardlake series is set during the reign of Henry VIII. First-rate.
I also enjoyed his book about the Spanish civil war, I can’t remember what it was called though.
@Gill Winter in Madrid?
@Margarita that’s the one! Thank you, ?
All the novels of Alexander Dumas. And Walter Scott.
