ALL the Pendergast novels by Preston and Child are worth the read. They can get pretty dark, but he’s one of the most fascinating characters in modern fiction IMHO. I also love the Inspector Gamache novels by Louise Penny. Her prose is simply lovely, and the stories challenging for their psychological depth.
