P.D. James was the absolute master of the mystery. Ruth Rendell also was an absolute master of the mystery. The Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr, the alphabet mysteries by Sue Grafton. The Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. The Matthew Shardlake series by CJ Sansom. The Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George. The Spencer and also the Jesse Stone series both by Robert B. Parker. Tana French is a master of the mystery.

I love Harlen Coben, but would describe his genre as thriller vs mystery. I’m no expert, but mystery to me is Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes.
