Sue Grafton’s alphabet mystery series. First one is called A is for Alibi. She recently passed away and didn’t get to Z but she only had one more to go, so the last book in the series is Y for Yesterday I absolutely loved the series I love the character. She’s a former cop that didn’t like the rules of being a cop and decided to be private investigator.
@Gwenn, they don’t “have” to be, but minor details change as you get further in. It’s about cops, so some charcters don’t come in until later, some get promoted, etc. Each novel stands alone, though. So if you want you can jump around, but to get the full experience, read in order.
Omg, they’re SO GOOD. Book #47 just came out, and I collect the paperbacks. I’m now up to 30/46! (#47 is hardcover so it doesn’t count, lol.) There’s a full list of the books, plus the novellas and the Nora Roberts/JD Robb crossover, available online.
Any books by Peter James, Simon Kernick , Peter Robinson, Agatha Christie, Ian Rankin , Jeffrey Deaver (Lincoln Rhyme series), Michael Connelly, Andrew Gross would be good in my opinion
David Rosenfelt’s mysteries are good and also funny. He is a dog lover and there are dogs in all of his stories. Julia Spencer-Flemings series about a female Episcopalian priest and a small town sheriff are also great-our book club loved them. Louise Penny’s are also good.Any of the Robert B. Parker series about Spenser.
In the Woods by Tana French and Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith. Galbraith’s series is a PI series but reads very close to a gritty detective noir.
Grace Gabbiano Mysteries and Andi Comstock Supernatural Mysteries, both series by me. Also, mysteries by PJ Parrish, PJ Tracy, Karin Slaughter, Matt Hilton, Dean Koontz.
From a Buick 8 by Stephen King.
