@Malik well the “old dame of Victorian Romances” was authoress Barbara Cartland….grandmother of Princess Diana….if you can find any of her books around still….
For actual gothic romance, I recommend Jane Eyre & Wuthering Heights & Frankenstein.
Mary Stewart has a Victorian gothic inspired style. And most of her books have romance. I’ve only read Rose Cottage and Thornyhold so far. Also my favorite author L M Montgomery has a Victorian gothic romance inspired style. I highly recommend The Blue Castle & Emily Of New Moon.
Lexi Sincere Yes. There is actual romance in it but romance is also the style of writing. Frankenstein was written in the Victorian period I’m pretty sure. It’s a classic of gothic romance.
I’m reading The Thirteenth Tale right now. It fits your category. Haven’t finished it yet so if it turns out to be rubbish… I’m sorry.
Aaaaah i love this book

It’s not a Victorian setting but The Sleep Room by F.R Tallis is a really good read
