I love mine. I’ve had one for about 5 years. Actually got a new one for Christmas. The one issue to keep in mind is to make sure you have enough memory to carry multiple books at once. The last one I had auto updated and installed Alexa and took all my storage so I was pretty much forced to get a new one. Otherwise I really like it.

I’ve had a Kindle for at least 4 years, and I use it at least 2 or 3 times a day. I have 830 books (just checked) and have read at least 300 of them. I go to Amazon 2 or 3 times a week and download a bunch of $.99 or free books each time, but I only read 1 or 2 of them a week. But I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have my Kindle.

I use my kindle all the time. It’s great for on the go, traveling, and reading in bed. I read the occasional paper book here and there when the spirit moves me but I do most of my reading on kindle now. I’m also more likely to use kindle for books I’m less sure I’ll like since the ebook is usually cheaper. So kindle has really broadened my horizons and gotten me to read books I ordinarily wouldn’t have gambled on.

I got a Kindle Paperwhite for Xmas. My plan is to take it out with me and reduce the risk of creases in my real books. I’m disappointed in the battery life though. They claim 28 hours but mine was flat within three days. Bearing in mind that that included Xmas day and Boxing Day so maybe an hour or two of reading on each of those days. I was hoping to use it when I travel overseas next year but at that rate it won’t get me through the first leg of the first flight ?

1
Reply
Jill

That doesn’t sound right at all. I read for hours a day and charge my paperwhite like once a month. Maybe if you try turning wifi off? You only need it when you’re downloading books and leaving it on I think drains the battery faster.

1
Jill

If that doesn’t make a huge difference I’d contact customer service. It should not be draining so fast.

0
Clare

@Jill I did have wifi on but turned it off after I recharged it. Used it for a couple of hours this morning and they battery symbol has already dropped down from full.

0
Clare

I press the power button to put the screen saver on when I stop reading for a short time and then turn the screen off when I stop for a longer length of time.

0
Jenna

Agree with Jill. You should contact customer service because what you are saying doesn’t seem right. They might be able to help you figure out if it’s an issue with the kindle or if there is something that is on that shouldn’t be etc.

0
Jill

I’ve read more than 12 hours the last couple days and my battery is still showing more than half full. And I let mine sit open while I get distracted all the time. I’d definitely message amazon and see if they can sort it out for you.

0
Clare

@Jenna yes I may have to. I hope that it is okay because it was a Xmas present and they don’t have the receipt.

0
Jenna

Yep because I have a fire and can leave it on Standby which does drain power, just slowly, and even after about 3-5 days it still has some power. The Paperwhite is supposed to last longer and even if you are leaving it on standby it shouldn’t be draining that fast.

0
Jenna

Did they get it from Amazon? I know some people can get them in stores as well.

0
Clare

Jenna Rodriguez no, they bought it before Amazon came to Australia.

0
Jenna

Amazon should still walk you through things to determine if there is something wrong with it. I believe I had a friend who had a similar issue and was able to contact them.

0
Clare

@Jenna I will give that a try if it continues to drain just as much with the wifi off.

0
Jo

Hi @Clare, I think it sounds like it could be that there was only a small amount of charge in it when you first used it, and the device is now only charging up to that level instead of being fully charged? You might be able to get longer battery life if you let it run out of charge so that it goes completely flat and then charge it up overnight. You may have to do this a few times to get it to be fully charged. I get at least a week out of mine – but I do turn it right off rather than using the screen saver. Hope you can get it sorted, happy reading!

0
Alexandria

@Clare keep the kindle on airplane mode when not downloading and brightness low. I keep mine that way & it lasts almost a week. If your having issues contact ask on and see if they’ll send you a new one.

0
Clare

@Jo Hi Jo, it was flat when I got it, I charged it until the light went green and the battery symbol showed full.

1
Jo

I would get in touch with the their customer service dept see what they say, in meantime try leaving it on charge overnight anyway – ice always found the Amazon customer service people to be very efficient. It must be annoying though, best of luck x

1
Clare

@Jo I chatted with Amazon tech support and it looks like my software was out of date. I’ve just updated it and am charging her up so hopefully that fixes the problem.

2

I have the Paper-white Kindle and I love it! I don’t get people who think you have to either love books or e-readers as if you can’t have both. E-readers are excellent for traveling, you can easily read the screen in bright sunlight, you don’t need to have a light on to read it in the dark (perfect for reading in bed without disturbing your partner) and it holds an entire library worth of books – what’s not to love?
EDIT The screen is better for your eyes than the blue light of smart phone and tablet screens which can interfere with your sleep – which is another plus point.

@Jo lol yeah that’s true. That’s why I ask once a week what people are reading or I stalk them on goodreads lol… I just think it’s sad that people think those who use kindles are below them. Every book I’ve read I gor a hard copy of unless I didnt like it then I dont buy the hard copy.

@Christle I like it because I can read a 600 page book and it doesn’t seem as intimidating

1
Christle

@Alexandria Exactly! This one book I really want looks daunting if I see a paper copy of it, but in ebook form, it doesn’t seem so bad. (Still gonna get a paper one, though, because if I’m reading a nonfiction book with maps, it’s easier to flip to them in a paper book.)

1
Alexandria

@Christle the final two books in the vampire academy are HUGE & so are the final two for the cinder trilogy. They don’t seem as daunting on my kindle. I feel like ill breeze through them

1
Alexandria

@Christle I am halfway through the first one. It’s good so far! I am enjoying it.

1

I was thinking it would be like twilight which I hated but it’s seeming to be better than that, almost like mortal instruments

1
Christle

@Alexandria I love Twilight, but yeah, it’s definitely more like Mortal Instruments to me 🙂 If you haven’t seen the VA movie yet, definitely don’t watch it until you finish the book you’re on. It doesn’t spoil anything but the first book.

0
Alexandria

@Christle my sister says it was a pretty bad movie. She’s read the VA books at least three times && she recommended them to me

0
Christle

@Alexandria I honestly love the movie, just because it was fun 🙂 And I usually can’t help comparing movies to the books they were adapted from, but with this one, I didn’t think about it at all.

I really feel a kindle is very useful. Carrying it is easy. You have more than one book to access without the weight. I have the paper white which has the background light so I can read without putting the lights on and the best thing is that whenever I see any book that all of you have read I can immediately download the sample and buy it right away without having to go anywhere. So it’s great?

I have had a kindle for about seven or eight years. I use it for reading only. I love it for all of the reasons that others have given and I have found it invaluable for holidays and several trips to hospital. Their samples give me a good idea of writing style before I buy the book. Don’t be talked into an alternative. I had a Sony Reader and it was hopeless.

I was really skeptical and unsure about using a Kindle, was! Kindle has its own perks like getting titles at a relatively lesser price, reading in all kind of light, easy to carry, can be held by one hand and most importantly it can store a huge number of books! But you would definitely miss the smell and the physical touch of the book!

Great and cheap on Amazon. My husband got an Amazon Fire and he loves everything about it. He can look anything he wants and is interested in up on google. Watch drag races, listen to all music. Read book that can be purchased very cheap from Kindle. He wanted nothing to do with technology except his DVR on the TV but now he loves his little computer in so many ways. Go for it. You can still read you books even if the powere goes out like our did tonight. Keep it charged. Just no internet.without power but who needs it if you can read by light in the Kindle.

I tested it by reading only printed books for a few weeks then back to my phone. No blurriness while reading the books, blurry like heck after reading on my phone. The Kindle is the best of both worlds.

I love my Kindle I use it so much more than ‘real’ books, it’s just easier, it’s lighter, I can read in bed (backlight) I can carry hundreds of books instead of one, cheaper books, daily sales and freebies, adjustable font and screen brightness, so many great things ?

I love my kindle! X I don’t use it a lot but it’s fabulous when I do. The storage on my Kindle Fire is really good too, the only problem would be that you can’t use it outside (sun glare) but I don’t read outside anyway. I don’t like the paperwhite as it’s quite small and dark.

Fair play I find its really good and the screen can turn insanely bright

1
Danika

Yeah, you can adjust the brightness of the paperwhite. I just don’t like reading on tablets or phones because it’s looking at a screen for hours, versus an ereader which looks like a paper book and it’s not an actual screen.

1
Danika

Plus, since it’s an ereader specifically for reading, the change lasts weeks even using it for hours a day!

I don’t use a Kindle, sorry. But I do use a free e-reader app on my phone. It’s called Moon+ Reader and I paid $5 to remove ads. Never really checked on the differences as I am still satisfied with my e-reader app haha. It can read a lot of file formats, even comic books. I made the text size a wee bit larger and the spacing between lines a little bit wider as well. I made the pages look like old book pages and turn page animation like flipping a real page. I use night mode at night when I read in bed and use a bluelight filter to lessen the glare from the screen. I can highlight, bookmark, copy quotes, highlight words and directly open em in my dictionary, it has text to speech, it reminds me to rest my eyes after an hour of reading, it’s fullscreen and notifications don’t get to bother me,etc. So yeah pretty happy with it and only paid $5.

I no more worry about taking two books in case I finished the one I’m reading. I also send all the important e-documents I have there, so I have them all the time as well. My favorite part is that when I’m traveling, I can still read my books even during night trips. I wouldn’t compare it to reading in actual books but each have its own charm I’d say.
