Books: The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule; I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi, And The Sea Will Tell by Vincent Bugliosi. Those are some of my favorites.
Podcasts: MFM (as many people have recommended), Last Podcast on the Left, Serial (Season 1), S-Town (by the producers of Serial), and Sword & Scale (but only the first 50 or so episodes are good before the host becomes a dick!)
@Harriet My best friend of all time who is so so intelligent told me about Limetown and I almost didn’t have the heart to tell her it was fiction, lol. She was amazed that it was such a well done coverup!
BLOOD & IVY: The 1849 Murder that Scandalized Harvard by Paul Collins. I saw Mr.Collins give an outstanding presentation about this book on BOOK TV last weekend.
Podcasts – Small Town Murder and My Favorite Murder. Both are hosted by comedians, so they try to make you a little more comfortable with the gory details by cracking jokes.
Smaldone: The Untold Story of an American Crime Family by Dick Kreck I haven’t read it yet but my best friend has and she highly recommends it. It’s on my tbr list.
The Stranger in the Woods by Micheal Finkle. Minor crimes , but story of a man who lived in the woods for forty plus years and eluded the law and survived by breaking in cabins to steal food. He survived Maine winters in his self made hut. It’s fascinating and true.
I’ll be Gone in the Dark, by Michelle McNamara. The podcast Casefile True Crime(Case 53, broadcast in May-June 2017) deals with the crimes committed by the Golden State Killer, who was arrested in April.
Books: In Cold Blood, The Stranger Beside Me, Helter Skelter, Devil in White City, The Fact of a Body, American Fire, Killers of the Flower Moon. Podcasts: Crime Town, My Favorite Murder, Criminal, True Crime Garage, Up and Vanished…
Carolyn pretty well covered it. I would add The Stranger Beside me by Ann Rule who knew Ted Bundy personally. Fatal Vision. Small Sacrifices. The Onion Field. The You Must Remember This podcast about the Manson murders.
Love true Crime Garage, MFM and last Podcast on the left. Also, The Cleaning of John Doe is an interesting twist to the true crime podcasts. And of course we have all left out Serial podcast. If you haven’t listened to that you must do that first. The story of Adnan Syed and the killing of Hae Min Lee
I’ve just started listening to ‘Death in Ice Valley,’ a series from BBC World Service and Norwegian NRK about a 50-year old cold case. Its great: very atmospheric, some great twists so far, some Cold War-era intrigue…. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p060ms2h
For those of you suggesting My Favorite Murder, I strongly suggest you try Small Town Murder, as well. A friend is a huge MFM fan and I turned her onto STM and she loves it.

I read “I’ll be gone in the dark” and book about Patty Hearst by Jeffery Toobin recently — both unusual perspectives. ?
For someone who followed the Patty Hearst story closely Jeffrey Toobin’s book, American Heiress, was a shocker. We were duped.
Is there anyone left who has not read Flowers of the Killer Moon by David Grann? Better hurry. Movie filming now. (Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio = should be great.) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29496076-killers-of-the-flower-moon?from_search=true
