The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson The Black Magicians Trilogy by Trudi Canavan His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix (I liked the original trilogy of Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen best) The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini (I’ve only read the first two but they were stunning, I’m actually planning to read the whole cycle in next few weeks)
Historical:
All the Light We Cannot See (WW2) The Book Thief (WW2) Outlander series
I absolutely love Conn Iggulden’s work …And I am so glad to finally come across some who does as well … For a brilliant writer that he is people hardly seem to have read his work
Check out Mercedes Lackey for a combination of the two. Her “Arrows of the Queen” trilogy is a good place to start. Also, someone mentioned Jean Plaidly. It’s easy reading historical fiction, but you’ll learn a lot about history in a fun way!
Historical Fiction? Definitely second Conn Iggulden books. Also, you can check out The Alexander trilogy by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Empire of the Moghul series by Alex Rutherford (Diana and Michael Preston), The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels by Philippa Gregory…
For historical fiction with a touch of magic realism try “The Water at the End of the World ” Set in Peru in the time of the Incas, it‘s a great adventure story of a young woman’s travels in search of the healing water.
What about historical fantasy?!? Bec by Darren Shan ticks both boxes! Set in a demon-ravaged Ireland 1600 years ago. 🙂 (Full disclosure — I write the Darren Shan books.)
I am getting ready to read FROM HERE TO ETERNITY by James Jones and he has captured my attention from page one so I would recommend it. It is part of a series of War books, which i don’t usually read but this year is all about getting out of my “usuals” and my comfort zone. Although, the book is fiction it is based on his war experiences somewhat like Hemingway and A Farewell to Arms, which is another sad but goodie! Hope you find some books you really enjoy! have a great day!
@Carmen i am such an oddball. i usually ALWAYS see the film before i read the book(LOL). my brain just works that way and i have come to accept it. i love movies as well as books and i grew to the point where it did not bother me if they diverged because i grew to accept them as separate creative entities and you cannot pace a movie the way a book is paced so i enjoy both and i have found times i loved the movie more than the book but i still love them both for their unique selves(LOL) as i think we should love people for their individuality(see, told you i was strange…LOL)
For fantasy I’d suggest The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. The Greatcoats series by Sebastian de Castell and The Traitor Son Cycle series by Miles Cameron.? Add in Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames and Age of Assassins/Blood of Assassins by R J Barker and it’s a great selection.
For historical, A Mighty Dawn by Theordore Brun and the recently released Kin by Snorri Kristjansson are both quality reads.
Recommend Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Discworld series, Wheel of Time, Gormenghast series, The Kingkiller Chronicles, The Earthsea Cycle, A Song of Ice and Fire, His Dark Materials, Mistborn series, Gentlemen Bastard Sequence, Percy Jackson series, Bromeliad, Magnus Chase series, Malazan Book of the Fallen, Renegades, The Dark Tower series, Avalonia Chronicles, The Inheritance Trilogy, Year One, Bartimaeus Sequence, Carpet People, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, The Sandman series, American Gods, Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book, Dresden Files, The Dark Elf Trilogy (Forgotten Realms saga), Artemis Fowl series, Pellinor series, Anansi Boys, Good Omens, Clovenhoof series, Time Quintet, Xanth series, Zeus is Dead, Zamonia series, Carpet Diem, The Heroes of Olympus series, The Kane Chronicles, BFG, The Phantom Tollbooth…
What about this, set in Tudor England. Historical crime novels with a great ‘hunchback’ lawyer come, investigator, I am up to Book 4 ‘Revelation’ https://g.co/kgs/WAoLsb
For Historical Fiction-The Nightingale by Kristin Hanna-started my reading of people caught under the German occupation of France-Poland-Italy(Beneath a Scarlet Sky).

Eloisa James and Julia Quinn are great fiction
Check out Mercedes Lackey for a combination of the two. Her “Arrows of the Queen” trilogy is a good place to start. Also, someone mentioned Jean Plaidly. It’s easy reading historical fiction, but you’ll learn a lot about history in a fun way!

That was one of the rare instances where I saw the film first and then read the book!
